One of my kitties used to pee outside the box in various places. I took her to the vet and had blood work done and they found nothing wrong. When I started giving her more attention and giving her her own special place in my bedroom she stopped and hasn't had a problem since then.

I wish I saw this two years ago. One of my cats started being aggressive towards the other. I just assumed it was because he knew the other cat was really sick (she had undiagnosed IBD at the time). When we took him in for his annual shots they heard a murmur. Blood test showed that he may have an enlarged heart and before we could get an echo to confirm, he threw a clot and went into heart failure, so we choose to put him down. The vet visit and his death was just a month apart. He died exactly one month before his tenth birthday. Still miss the little guy. Wish I had taken him in sooner if I had known.

I had a feral who went blind but it took me a while to notice because she compensated so well. She rhen started losing weight: took her to the vet, they took blood and said everything was normal except her liver values. Took her to another vet who said the liver enzymes were even worse, but everything else was normal. He referred me to a specialist who did an ultrasound and fine needle aspirate. Inconclusive. I starrted giving her Denamarin and tried to get her to eat. She'd eat for a while, ravenously, then stop. I then began syringe feeding her. She was dehydrated but doing subcue, syring feeding, and pilling her was destroying our relationship. Finally, I started making chicken broth (nothing I found on a shelf was just chicken and water, everything had onion and garlic plus a lot of other sketchy ingredients). Chicken thighs and water make a fantastic broth and she drank that. The only thing she'd eat was raw ground chicken thighs. She would not touch any organ meat, so I supplemented taurine. She died in May, in the early morning, but I don't know what caused her decline. She'd been indoor only since 2020, spayed. I wanted a nexropsy but the rural vet didn't do them. She was only 10yo, RIP Mama.

Pure chicken usually has too much phosphorus in relation to calcium so after a while it's doing more harm than good. Liver failure is no joke and unfortunately in my experience vets most often can't even diagnose the issue, let alone prescribe a cure.

The common plant Milk Thistle is a wonderful herb and a tonic for an over taxed liver. It can stop ingested poisons from destroying the liver. And it lowers liver enzymes too. I bet if she had given this to her cat the cat might have survived. And it is not expensive at all. And it is great for people too.

@@nyxcin1 You’re welcome. I used milk thistle for my own elevated liver enzymes. The gastroenterologist had NOTHING to offer except a gastric by pass and I will not do anymore surgeries because they just makes things worse. So I took milk thistle and some herbs, NO drugs and my liver enzymes dropped right down into normal ranges. I have changed my diet and lost some weight. I bet the same results could have been achieved at a fraction of the cost with herbs, of course getting anything like this down a cat is always difficult, which is one reason I used homeopathy on my previous cat. A few pellets in water is all it takes.

We adopted our female through the Humane Society and think she was a stray rather than a surrender. She would have her back to the wall when eating so she could see everything around her, and she'd eat so fast she'd throw up. Not all the time but about once or twice a week. So we raised her bowl up (she'd kind of toss the kibble in the air a bit and catch it so we thought they might be getting caught in her throat or she was swallowing air with the food), put half her food down at a time and we added warm water to it. Since then she's been much better and only throws up the occasional furball.

You are probably correct. My “Sweet Boy” was originally a stray too. One day he wandered into a friend’s back yard. (All the strays came to her place, which I called “cat central’. She feed them but he wanted to play with the other cats and they did not want it, so he interrupted the cat detente she had there. She liked him and gave him to me and he too, and still does eats so fast I can hardly put his dish down down before he utterly devours the food. My guess is this: cats that are not scooped up as kittens and which are left to wander about develop a life long fixation around food because they have experienced intense food insecurity. Domesticated cates, I think have come to depend on humans for food as well as other essentials. I read of a similar situation with people who were deprived of food in the Nazi death camps and who subsequently survived it. They developed what I would call life long food insecurity issues.

This sounds gross but I always inspect what my cat vomits up for clues to the cause. If there is a lot of fur, I step up hairball remedy especially in the summer during shedding season. Grass is more of a symptom than a cause so if I see grass I make sure to give him foods easy on the digestion (moist, small bits, not too much) and watch for any behavioral changes of concern. My senior cat vomits if his food is too watery, especially his first meal of the day. What works well is when I crush up freeze dried nuggets, add water to rehydrate and make sure I pour off all the excess water. During the rest of the day he gets more freeze dried or a canned pate. No broths or gravies for this guy.

Yes, my cat too! Literally sleeping next to water bowl with his chin on the edge of bowl. He was a bit overweight but he’s a large breed. Was 22 lbs, now 1 1/2 years later he’s 18 lbs. vet has him on lantus glargine 2x a day. He’s 15 yrs old. Great kitty, absolutely magnificent I’ve been told. He’s long haired solid black with a beautiful mane. Good news from vet says that if kitty is well regulated on insulin, they can live much longer lives than previously thought. Was three years after diagnosis, but now it’s much longer. Hope your kitty is doing well. I found an organization that helps pay for the insulin and two major vet visits per year that does all the necessary testing. Helps when you need extra help with finances.

With the litterbox stuff, don't panic, its such a HUGE list of varying reasons why they do this. Try adjusting litterboxes, add a new litterbox, TRY A DIFFERENT NON-CLAY LITTER (omg this changed everything for us). I always recommend a once a year checkup at a vet, but understand the Vet industry is just that..... an industry. They are there to make money and are one of the industries that are incredibly scummy with their HUGE percentage profit leaps in the last decade. What used to cost like $50 10/15 years ago now costs $500-$600 at the vet. It is ridiculous and that industry should be ashamed in my opinion. I would LOVE someday to see pet healthcare to be federalized as I would with human healthcare as well (yeah right this country makes too much money off sick pets and people for either of those to ever happen haha...America! ugh).

My senior-adopted calico Nola (in my pfp) has had a couple of these, one less serious and one quite serious. She had spells of quite frequent vomiting, I consulted with my vet via email first (which was free) and then she came in for a regular appointment and got some meds. Turns out she's just a gremlin that likes eating lint 😅, so she got some meds to help her pass that without vomiting (pet insurance covered most of that) and obviously I try to tidy up any dust bunnies when I find them. The second more scary one was her suddenly peeing outside of her litter box. I thought she just wanted me to clean her litter box so I did, but as I was cleaning it she ran to one of her beds and peed there. She was clearly trying to tell me something so I rang the vet and got an emergency appointment. Turns out she was stressed to the point of anxiety because I had been moving/assembling furniture in my flat. She got a course of anti-anxiety meds (that plus appointment mostly covered by insurance), and I bought her a second litter box and now make sure if I'm changing stuff up in the flat it's gradual and her home still has lots of familiar places for her to relax.💖

Two of our kitties started fighting frequently. After trying a few interventions ourselves we consulted with our wonderful Veterinarian. He suggested a behaviorist although first wanted to try an Rx for Fluoxetine. One is taking the oral suspension and the other the transdermal cream applied inside an ear (alternating ear each day). We are 1 month into them using this Rx and we’ve seen a positive change. I’ll be checking in with our Veterinarian later this month on how things are going, next steps, etc.

@@Wudanmaster116 It seems that I should have provided a bit more info. These 2 kitties weren't just fighting they were rolling, screaming, hair flying, close to injury fighting. This activity began to happen quite frequently (i.e., more than once per day) and completely raised the anxiety and stress level in our household which includes 2 additional kitties and a wonderful senior dog. Our 4 kitties are little mates and we adopted them 4 years ago. So this behavior was unusual thus definitely warranted an appt. with our wonderful Veterinarian. We talked long and hard about next steps and decided to try the Fluoxetine to start with. I will work with him to discuss next steps as my preference is that they not need to take the Fluoxetine for the remainder of their lives. We are only 4 weeks into them using this Rx and I understand it can take 6-8 weeks for it to make a difference. Thank goodness it didn't take that long for them to begin to calm down.

@@lynnstimson3555glad to hear the treatment is working. One other option for anxiety or aggression is the supplement L-theanine. Our vet gave us some treats with L-theanine, but our cats wouldn’t eat them. Instead I add the powder from capsules of the human supplement. We have 5 cats, but only a 2 to 3 eat the canned food. I use 2 L-theanine caps (200 mg each) for each small can or cat food, twice a day. This is a high dosage, but the cat who eats the most has suffered from a severe anxiety disorder from kittenhood. Yeah sure, instead of using common sense in figuring out why your cat is doing stuff, pay $100+/- for a vet visit AND pay for a bunch of diagnostic tests. Your vet deserves to be rewarded handsomely because, well, they are "experts" - and you are not. Yes, there are some things vets are able to do that you cannot, but don't go running to a veterinarian until you've applied your common sense.

It really is ridiculous that vets followed the healthcare tactic of charging 4-5x the actual cost of everything. It is very important to bring pets in regularly but then they saddle you with huge bills for things that dont deserve huge bills. Capitalism demands you pay 5-6 people that arent your vet everytime you go

A good vet will take the time for question and answers. Just like a doctor for yourself , is a good way to tell. A good rapour is important and one that your kitty can rrkk I ax with during an exam. You’ll know if they’re good if the vet comes across as truly kind to your pet, talks to you , gives good advice, and doesn’t rush you out. Talking to you is a must. The worst vet I had was one that would come in and exam my cat, then leave the room. He wouldn’t come back in to talk to me but instead , I had to talk to the receptionist (!!) and there was no dialogue either the get himself! Found another vet. The second one kept telling me I needed to ‘put the kitty down ‘ as he was very sick. Twice he told me that a year apart. Kitty wasn’t that sick, he had diabetes! That’s all. No need to put him yo sleep! Found another vet. We’re now very happy with the current get who loves my boy and knows everything I need yo know. She’ll even do phone visits if I have a problems and doesn’t charge me anything. So, just saying, keep looking if the vet doesn’t seem right to you. Trust your judgement. Good luck!

My cat is having some issues that were not covered here so I’m going to ask: so when I got my cat about 5 months ago, I kept him in the master bedroom for about 3 weeks. The master bathroom has my bed and my work desk, so naturally I am in that room 10 to 12 hours per day. One day I opened the door, and he saw me leave and he was curious so he followed me and discovered the rest of the two story house. Now I need to teach him to go downstairs to eat in the kitchen. I placed his dishes and showed him that the food is now in the kitchen and he ate and day after day I have noticed that he will not eat unless I go down to the kitchen and stay with him while he ate. I had to return the food back to the master bathroom and I left the wet food in the kitchen since the frigid is there. Now he is eating 90% dry food and 10% wet food. I love it that he drinks regularly and he likes the fountain I got for him. How do I train my cat to go to the kitchen anytime he is hungry?

I am not an expert but have had cats all my life. Seems he either feels insecure about eating in the kitchen and/or without you there. You could try putting a favorite toy or two down there or something else he likes that has his scent on it. You could also just not feed him anywhere but the kitchen, then leave. He won't starve himself. When he's hungry, he will go there to eat if there is no food elsewhere and whether you are there ore not. I used to feed my cats upstairs as a convenience to me but one cat started territory marking that room so I stopped. It took a while before they stopped asking for food in there but they did stop after three weeks or so. Hope this helps.

@@Wudanmaster116 My cat is a very healthy ALL black cat. I read somewhere that black cats are quite healthy as a general rule. Part of the problem is that he has an addiction to kibble. (My previous cat ate the same brand of kibble and wasn’t addicted to it.) I get most of my supplies from Pet Food Express so it was high quality kibble, but still a carb. I read in several places where cats cannot metabolize carbs, this and considering his constant cravings for it I decided to stop it. As to raw meat, he will eat ANY meat put in front of him. I suspect part of this is due to the fact that he was an outdoor cat that nearly starved to death before he came to my friend’s place where she feed him. Eventually I took him in because he is an adorable cat and he has adjusted well to being an indoor only cat. I suspect because he gets regular meals with me. I figure my cat is like me as a human: he needs to eat good quality species specific food, which nowadays is problematic for us as well as our pets because there are so many additives that are not “real food” e.g., maltodextrin, which is a chemically based ingredient food additive.

@@David-dvr It seem there might be a reason for it beyond inflation. The “vulture” (venture) capalists have found a new market to satisfy their greed with. They are buying up vet practices and then pressuring the practitioners to jack up the prices. They do something similar with the housing market. Buy a property for all cash and undercut a legitimate home buyer. Same thing different market. As to vets, I had a hard time cutting my cats nails so I do it myself now and put up with his squirming around in the kitchen sink. I did this when a simple nail cut went from 12 dollars for basically a five minute procedure to about 36 dollars.

Please take her to the vet if you see her pawing at her mouth or making what I'll call a bitey face. It looks like what you would imagine if you were using your tongue to work at some food that was stuck in your teeth.

Useless advice about food. Cat vomiting few times a week for long time. Vet did xray. “Oi, all GI tract is bad. Eutonise! Probably cancer! “ Cat lives like this for a year. Still alive🙏

some vets are useless like that, which is really a big problem, because how can you trust vets in general when some of them should have never become one.

@@vaakdemandante8772 that's true , met 1 or 2. Who just not give a damn and blame you when cat is sick , you give it medicine and he later died. It was just horrible , never again with that POS vet , and want peoples money for greed

Please, what's too frequent vomiting? Several times a day, a week, a month?
@RH-ul2bc
@RH-ul2bc Ай бұрын
Vomiting several times a day, get that cat to the vet asap. They can get dehydrated quickly. If your cat vomits liquid or foam more than one time, call the vet and get them seen. If the cat vomits a hairball, you are most likely fine but seek hairball remedies. Whenever in doubt, call the vet and ask.

My general care vet says 1-2 hairballs a month is tolerable. My Internal Medicine specialist vet says they should never be vomiting. Even for hairballs. Multiple weekly vomiting is a see the vet soon visit. Multiple daily is an emergency vet visit.

Our vet says if it’s when eating, it’s usually “ok”. This was also when saying it was once a month also. If it’s not when feeding or weekly, there’s probably an issue. Daily is an emergency vet visit IMO.

@@cmiovino true. I forgot to mention it as I don’t see that as vomit since it has a different body motion. And it’s easily fixed by slowing them down.

One of my cats began vomiting more frequently until it was happening 1-2 times a week, and she was eating less and less. I took her to the vet, and she turned out to have a cancerous mass in her abdomen. Fortunately it was treatable with a couple of pills that she has to take for the rest of her life. One of them is expensive, but the mass is gone (or so small the vet can’t find it anymore) and she’s been stable for two years now, so it’s worth it.

@@helaberger4018 had cats all my life. None ever hit by car. Had a 17 year old and her daughter who made it to 20, back in day when all kibble was pretty much garbage. I currently shelter and feed over 30 cats. All can climb 50 feet up a tree in under 5 secs. They come down a little slower, lol. When I lived with my parents, we had a vet that made house calls, and he drove an old ambulance. His name was Dr. Bitgood! But anyhow, all but 2 of my cats were feral. I had them all spayed and neutered through the Humane Society, a wonderful Executive Director worked with me to get them s/n and vaccinated. They can come and go as they please. I even have raccoons and possums who get along with all in my cat colony. I have posted at least 100 photos of my cats on my Next door app I deal with fleas, ear mites, URI , eye infections and worms. I'm retired so it keeps me busy and never been happier :)).

@@helaberger4018 I've had cats all my life. My parents had 2 cats. One lived to 17 yrs old, and her daughter made it to 20. Indoor / outdoor. When I married and had kids, always had cats. Never were hit by cars, never got lost. Now I'm retired and shelter, feed over 30 ferals. All were spayed/ neutered and vaxxed through the Humane Society. They're welcome to come and go as they please. Anyone of them can climb 50 feet in a tree in under 5 seconds. I treat for fleas, ear mites, URI, eye infections and worms. All are healthy and happy. The oldest are brother and sister and approx 10 years old. I've never had a litter box. I post photos of them on Nextdoor app. They, the cats have raccoon and possum friends. Several times I've seen a cat, raccoon and possum eating from the same plate at the same time. My daughter has free range chickens and there are no issues with the cats and chickens. My cat colony is spoiled and offer much companionship with no hardship. :)) I wouldn't even consider an indoor only cat.
