I agree that dehydration is the root of most problems. And most people, even oily people, are dehydrated, and it is because of the world we live in with central heating, air conditioning, environmental issues, etc.

I have an oily skin. I actually did this with utmost skepticism. I noticed that my face seemed more balanced actually. It goes to show that a lot of the information out there about oily skin are wrong. Better hydration = lesser oil production. I actually do this method at least twice a week. It's soooo good and really does make my skin feel supple.

my skincare routine naturally evolved into a series of lighter formulations... I only use light products, most containing fermented ingredients and various essences, follow up with a sheet mask, and top it off with eye cream. I have oily/combo skin, and this has been an absolute miracle. no more clogged pores, breakouts, or dead skin. I do use an AHA (CosRx), though, and have had great results... seems to enhance the benefits. I do have pretty resilient skin, though. :) Gothamista is my skincare go-to... HUGE fan! ❤

I use this method. I use Innisfree Blueberry toner and the last three steps I use the InsTree Hyaluronic toner because it’s a little thicker because it’s 50% hyaluronic acid. But I also use the Mizon Snail Skin Power Original First Essence - 94,5 % Galactomyces & the Pyunkang Yul Essence as my finishing moisturizers. My skin is brighter and plump. It has a glass look but soft and subtle. Thank you ladies! I know I’m like 2yrs late but this has helped my skin TREMENDOUSLY!! ♥️

When I hit my mid-30's I started doing something like this, my skin was always parched and it would just keep 'drinking.' Took me a while to figure it out, after trying many expensive moisturizers. I just keep patting on the toners and essences based on skin condition until my skin feels quenched. Never thought about avoiding the eye area...thanks for the great tip. Love how both of you wore the headbands the whole time...kawaii 😻

You're the first one to even mention that essences or toners aren't supposed to be used on the eyes. A lot of people just put it on like that! Your videos are informative and well researched so thank you! I noticed that you had said good things about Missha' s time revolution night repair science activator ampoule in one of your videos. My skin type is like yours and I had a decent skincare routine with the first treatment essence which minimised my pores but after I added the ampoule I noticed slightly enlarged pores near my nose. Did you get that too or is it just me? Will it get better with time? What is your experience with the ampoule? I couldn't find any other videos on your channel related to this. Your reply would be appreciated 🙂

Hooray! I have been waiting for this video!!! I began doing the "7 Skin" for a few months. I watched Sarah's Glow Recipe partner, Christine, doing this and gave it a try. It really does give you "mochi" texture, even on my super dry skin. Your recommendation for Oolu was perfect! The Jasmine Moisture liquid is sooooo good for this. I did this before and my skin was amazing, after toners I would layer up honey propolis ampoule essence/lotions over it and finally a moisturizer and always SPF before going out since I have dry skin that responds well to propolis products. But I got lazy since then and just went back to regular skincare routines with actives (optional), toner, serum, essence, moisturizer, and sometimes a cream mask or sleeping mask. But my skin got congested and was still dry, so I went back to the 7 skin method, and my skin feels extra plump and moisturized THROUGHOUT THE DAY. Usually with regular skincare routines, my skin gets dry even if I put on a cream mask or sheet mask. With the 7 layer skin, it’s more efficient and I can target different issues easily, if I have dull skin I use 7 layers of the Japanese hada labo arbutin premium toner, if I just need moisture, I can use Hanskin moisture essence or other hyaluronic acid based plumping first essences. Otherwise, like Rene said, I’d go with TheOrdinary and use layers of Buffet and Niacinamide/Zinc. For the easiest, laziest way, I use my Fresh rosewater mist and just spritz and pat in.

I’m the girl who has SUPER oily skin yet dry under all the oil. I read about the 7 skin method in a FB beauty group yesterday and someone recommended this video. I came to the realization that my skin is dry (duh) and even though I’m using HA and other moisturizers, it’s just not enough. So I went home wanting to try 7 layers of moisture even though I don’t have any moisturizing toners (yet) so I decided to just try it with what I had on hand. So last night I Put on 7layers of my matryxl synth serum mixed with an HA serum. I topped that with a sample of Belief moisturizer. Then this morning I use 3 layers of buffet followed by sunscreen followed by my makeup. MY SKIN IS FREAKING AMAZING TODAY!!! I can’t believe it. And no oil. At all! I just had to share. I’m so amazed at how dry my skin was and all it really wanted was enough moisture! I’m ordering toner ASAP!

Thank you Renee and Sarah. I'm home in bed this weekend with a nasty head cold, and my skin is dry, dehydrated and chapped particularly around the nose from blowing it so much. Since I have Blithe Vital Essence, I decided to give this a try after taking a shower and applying my Drunk Elephant Vitamin C. It's just what my skin needed. I followed with the Ordinaries Matryxl around my eyes, Buffet on the rest of my face. Then my eye cream, face cream and sunblock. My skin feels soooooo hydrated.

My skin reacts to heavy night creams but lighter moisturizers aren't enough. I use this method every other evening using 3 essences, a serum, a lotion and finish with an oil. i think this method is also good for skincare-beginners you can get to introduce less products to your skin and it helps your skin get used to something new. like you can just use this method after cleanser and end it with a light moisturizer to lock in everything and you're good to go (there you go, only 3 products - cleanser, toner, moisturizer). it hydrates as well as save the trouble to look for 10 more products for the rest skincare steps when you're fairly new to this whole skincare world. just my thought, not that i'm a beginner tho. thanks Renee for this informative video :)

Also I have a acne prone skin/oily combo so I was scared to introduce so many layers of different products suddenly but this 7 skin care is really amazing idea to start with. I've done 3 step method (as Gothamista recommended to start), I swear to God I've done it twice and my face looks plump and full! I'm 56! Add this to your routine, it's worth the effort. Thanks Gothamista!

I'm glad to know you can use the same toner for all the layers if you want. When I first heard about it, I thought each layer was a separate product! Is it just as effective both ways (ie using one vs. multiple)?

I've been eyeing this method for years now and been skeptical and cynical, but I think I'm finally going to try it out for myself. My skin is painfully dehydrated. Nothing like winter wreaking havoc on your skin to dial up the desperation and make you try anything.

I have been using the 7 skin metod for 6 months. I have a mature, sensitiv, dry and dehydrated skin. I use 3 diffrent toners. This method has made wonders for my skin. I have got such a helthy looking and glowing skin. I use the method 2-3 times a week with 7 layers. And the other days i use less layers, 2-4.

Arts 3 Son and Park Beauty Water and Missha the first treatment essensen. Some times i also add Etud House moistfull collagen facial toner. I also put it on my neck, not all 7 layers. You Will notice how many layers your skin want's by how the toner sinks in to the skin.

I think I did this by accident once. I made a tea and put some in a spritzer bottle and was spritzing it on my skin and patting it in while I watched a show. I did a few layers of this spritz and pat. I was just trying to get in the tea benefits, not necessarily trying to focus on moisture. My skin was glowing! I thought it was the tea but maybe part of it was the layering of moisture. Interesting! I am def going to have to try this with an essence or toner.

AM: 1. Wash with Cetaphil 2. Pat in toner 3. Pat in water essence 4. Pat in hydrating serum 5. Pat in facial oil 6. Pat in lotion 7. Pat in aquaphor PM: Same as above but I double cleanse with and oil cleanser and then Cetaphil first before going to step 2. I also always use thin layers. I used to have extremely dry skin in my face and now I never do anymore

Love the bunny ears! I want one! Christine, How do you use this method with serums? I thought that some serums( vit c, retinols) had to be placed on the skin first for absorption, then use the essences. If I use the 7 layers first, would the vit c or retinol ever penetrate my skin? Thank you.

I can't wait to try this! I have dehydrated/oily skin. I'm 37 but still get breakouts (probably because I've been stripping my skin dry for so long) - and now I'm starting to get fine lines too, so I'm revamping my skin care routine at the moment. This technique will definitely help balance out my skin as well. Great video! Thanks ladies! Oh BTW, new sub here. Just found you Renee and I'm already hooked 🖤

Thanks for sharing this method. I actually do something similar , I use a pressed cotton sheet mask and soak it with my toner and leave it for several minutes . Them do the message - tapping- pressing - thing. Then essence and cream goes . But I never did it every day ! Defiantly trying this out!

My skin is very dry. So I have to be extra careful of what type of toner I use. Which doesn't contain alcohol or other drying ingredients. My favorites so far are the L'Oréal Hydrating Toner, some other rose toners and now I'm using the Neutrogena without alcohol. So, I will try this method from time to time. It seems very refreshing, too.

I WAS JUST WONDERING ABOUT THE EYES!! Good to know! It's only been less than a week but I am loving the 7 skin method with Whamisa's Organic Flowers toner, my skin is plump/hydrated and in the morning I can see a real difference. I have never had a product perform like Organic Flowers... hoping I'm not jinxing myself here but I feel like my skin is clearing up and the redness from post acne spots and broken capillaries is starting to subside. If it continues, I will be back in the Glow Recipe Downtown pop-up for another bottle before month's end.

Wow! I didn't know you can apply a toner without a cotton pad, I always put toner on a cotton pad and then put that on my face. I like this method much better especially since I have rosacea and any rubbing irritates my skin more. Thank you for this great tip!

Can I do this with the toner that I already have? I use the Paula's Choice Calm Redness Relief toner. I'm not sure I'd do it 7 times, even if it's just once I love this method if patting. This toner is kind of thick in consistency and I used to think a lot of it got wasted stuck to the cotton pad.

Great tips. Thanks for clarifying about using toner in the eyes. I would clean my eyelids with alcohol free toner and it would irritate and sting my eyes to the point of making my eyes cry. I've learned a lot in your channel Rene about taking care of my skin. Thank you 😊 ❤️

I didn't even know about this method. However I am already doing something similar to it. I use two toners everyday, day and night. In the morning after washing and exfoliating my face I spray an essence on and then I pump out a different essence and pat it into my skin. So its not 7 layers but 2. Since doing this my dehydrated yet oily skin has gotten a lot more hydrated and less oily. Whenever my dehydration gets worse I basically keep on slapping on toners until my skin stops absorbing it.

My teen daughters have acne (oily skin) and I've made them a diy toner with a base of aloe, and then two eye droppers full of glycerin, one of tea tree oil, one dropper of sweet almond oil, put it in a small spray bottle, and it has worked wonders for their skin.
