I didn't get notification. I'm back on track. Thanks for another tutorial Mike. This is exactly a topic I needed confirmation on, in terms of validity, that so many teachers discourage. They preach not to "pull chest," but this is not pulling chest. This can be very demanding, but can sound so great. I think the Four Tops singer, Levi Stubbs, sang a lot of songs this way.

Wow, that actually just explained a lot. You just explained the difference between different teachers’ techniques that I have studied over the years.

Ah mio sol pensier sei tu, Tosca... When I get there then I need 3 or 4 seconds to hit these A and B flat. Is there a way to get there still fresh?

Does the squeezing happen with the abdomen?
@Tenoretrimble

No. it happens with the lower ribs in the lower back. Read Caruso's book (or my book available on Amazon, named FUNDAMENTALS OF GREAT VOCAL TECHNIQUE". All of the famous singers are quoted as to their breathing method in it. Michael t

Stop the breath at the chest so that the lower back ribs will squeeze, so that you can sing freely. The abdomen remains soft, uninvolved in singing

now I know why it is easier to sing questa o quella naturally for me, n i like to sing like that with a kind of aggressivity n punchy way of singing ....n la bohème is hard for me...as i am a spinto ++ tenor.......

I'm getting better at breathing deep into my back, at least when I'm practicing at home. But I sing in Church (on my own) in front of many people, and I tend to get really stressed out (not to mention that some of my fellow Church singers are very difficult people to work with, and this does not help my stress!). As a result, I am unable to take a deep breath in between phrases and this leads to a very nasal, ugly sound.

You sound great here Michael, maybe in your maturity you became more spinto! Hines also describes this method in his four voices of man book, although he seems to have learnt it from a lyric singer.

I still find that pulling the belly in to almost the extreme is the most helpful. Spinto variation isn’t for me I think. I’ve learned to pull in the belly to sing classically right from University but didn’t take it far enough until recently and the results are dramatically different in the most positive way I hope other struggling singers will find a breakthrough soon

@@tehilachitumbo2811 if you watched the videos of maestro trimble, specially the *sternal arch" and the "fuction of the abdomen" and the "breath stop", those explain in detail the sensation of stoping the breath at the chest which would result to squeezing at the lower back (a reaction which automatically activates due to diaphragmatic lean). Pull in the abdomen first as though it reaches your spine, then inhale down the lower back while keeping the chest open, then release the abdomen, then stop by the breath at the chest literally. You cant stop the breath without singing or vocalizing. The stoppin of the breath must result due to the larynx voice production. You must sing in order to stop the breath. However, the glottal stop or the gentle cough, is a great instigator preset to do the breath stop. Watch carefully maestros videos, took me 5yrs to learn them alone, unless you will take singing seriously

@@tehilachitumbo2811 i release the abdomen immediately after i inhale. Do it in a more relaxed manner, maybe you are tensing up becuase youre unsure yet of what to do, thats natural, ive been there. Release the abdomen immediatley after inhalation, literally make it relaxed. When you relax the abdomen, you will feel the diaphragm automatically immediately tense, then youre good to sing. You will always feel the diaphragm. if you cant feel the diaphragm, there is a problem. You'll find a way to understand thru experience. Remember to relax the throat and head, focus on the chest lean and on the resonance, and jaw down. Youll understand it if you get the feeling

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for me personally, Franco Corelli had the most beautiful voice, and he certainly did not have a lyrical sound. How would you define a spinto voice then? Martinelli is obvious, but other obvious choices include Filippeschi and Lauri Volpi. These singings had a lot squillo, but they were somewhat different from Martinelli. I think Filippeschi would be a perfect example of a spinto. Corelli is also most often used as an example of a spinto tenor, but I think his voice was really more dramatic. Since you started with Cielo e mar, both Del Monaco and Corelli sang that aria with great beauty. Of course these days spinto and dramatic roles are very often given to aging lyric tenors, which I think is a terrible practice, most of the big opera houses have been producing 4th grade spinto and dramatic material for years now.
