Great tips. I followed these, and I landed a job with a comms company. If anyone is interested, I learned the following things: 1. Excel, including VBA. I was surprised how many companies wanted VBA skills. 2. I learned Power BI. 90% of companies in my region run an MS stack. 3. SQL. I didn't learn the ins-and-outs, just the parts for querying and modifying data.

(Don't want to name-drop any Udemy instructors here since I don't have permission from this YT channel). I'm also planning on taking a Power BI course at some point. Two questions for you: 1. Although BI does aim to answer specific questions through the insights gained by visualising data, its main focus is to help companies monitor their activity through constantly updating dashboards. I think you are talking more about data exploration which isn't really the subject of this video

I’d say that if you only have 2 projects in your portfolio, that’s probably not enough and the interviewer might ask why there aren’t more. I agree totally with your last comment but, with respect, it still misses the point. SQL and Excel and totally different things and most data generated by a business is collected in SQL databases. The majority of the data a business possesses in Excel files has been exported from a SQL database to begin with. The whole video is about 7 steps to your first BI analyst job. To become a BI analyst you cannot not learn SQL, it's just not possible. You need both Excel and SQL which is why I said initially that Excel is definitely not more important than SQL.

Great video but I saw some roles that involves Data Warehousing. Is that a more advanced skill?
@LearnBI3 жыл бұрын
Good question. More often than not, data warehouses are just glorified sql relational databases so knowing how to create them and the tables in them is half the battle. But, depending on the size of the company, it’s often the job of the IT department to set up data warehouses. Leaving you to carry out your analyst tasks.
@Saleem__7863 жыл бұрын
@@LearnBI thanks. Also a lot of roles in my area want technologies like SSIS and SSAS. I just like to ask, I know Data Warehouses are created in a way to be used for analysis and you analyse these DWs in SSAS. but can you analyse normal relational databases in SSAS? Do companies do that?
@LearnBI3 жыл бұрын
SSIS and SSAS are both Microsoft SQL Server tools. SQL Server is a RDBMS like MySQL or PostgreSQL. So those tools are specific to SQL Server only.
@Saleem__7863 жыл бұрын
@@LearnBIok. do you have more videos on Data Warehousing concepts. I'm having a hard time understanding what topics like OLTP, OLAP, Tabular Model, Multidimensional Model are. This is my take but correct me if i'm wrong SSAS is used to analyse a data warehouse. A data warehouse is data that is stored from different sources, but it's stored differently like it has fact side and a dimension side. i don't know what those means. You can use a tabular model, which is built on relationships or you can use a multidimensional OLAP, which is built on dimensions. Tabular is a newer method.
@LearnBI3 жыл бұрын
It seems like you’re getting yourself overly confused with technical jargon and concepts. This is the kind of stuff you would need to know if you wanted to become an engineer or data architect but not an analyst.

I think the fact that you already have the skills you do will put you ahead of a lot of candidates. What you would just need to show, other than a portfolio containing business-related projects, is your passion for working with business data and helping companies to grow and evolve using data.

Do you think that for bi analyst job , it is necessary to have degree like traditional degrees btech , mba and sortta other?
@LearnBI3 ай бұрын
The answer to your question is will depend on a lot of different factors. Most large corporations will require that employees have been to college and earned a degree for a BI Analyst position. Some will require a related degree, some won't. Some will require previous experience and some won't (for entry-level positions). Smaller organisations might not require a degree but look for experience instead, some will look for both. You definitely don't need an MBA. But you do need a project portfolio that showcases your work and acquired skills.

For Business Intelligence you don't need to know Python because most BI projects don't call for the kinds of analysis that Python is built for. In BI you'll be mostly aggregating and visualising business data using SQL and BI tools that were built for BI. If you want to become a data scientist then you'll definitely need to study Python but that's a different channel 😁

Yes, this is a good suggestion. However, for your first BI ANALYST job, I'm not sure you'd be expected to have this skill. Because there are so many different ETL tools and they work in very different ways, you could never be sure that the company you're applying to would use the ETL you've learned. Best to stick to the basic, globally-recognised skills like SQL and Excel. There will always be learning on the job of the tools specific to the company you're hired by.
