Good tips. My whole game improved when I learned to make almost all 3-footers. So to "think positive" about longer putts, I would move half way closer to the hole and practice my stroke. I knew I could make that so I could see the longer putt rolling over my practice stroke line. Helped with confidence and positivity. Also makes lag putting easier.

@RickShielsPGA these videos have drastically improved my game. There are 100’s if not 1000’s of videos on youtube trying to fix your game. If I retain your info, slow it down while practicing, and then get the muscle memory, there are no betting instructions anywhere than yours. It sound weird but i literally love you man. You know how frustrating golf can be, but when you know and feel what you’re doing wrong and can fix it, it makes it a “challenge” instead of frustrating. I appreciate you so much my man thank you for every second you put into this for your fans and fans of golf 🙏🏼

Man, I’ve watched about a dozen of your videos and have really seen my game improve. I was apprehensive to start watching golf tip videos at first because I thought that I would get too much info in my head and just complicate things further. But I’ve picked up just a tip or two in each of your videos and never feel like I’m being over loaded with technicalities. Thanks so much for the lessons!

Hey there Rick, I'm a 69 year old male golfer. I really enjoy your channel, you have many interesting and educational topics. The topic no one ever talks about is the Yips... I've suffered with the swing yips now for about 3 years. Bless my golf partners they put up with my swing, but it drives me crazy and the last two seasons I've stop playing earlier in the year because of frustration. My problem is with every club (even the putter) is taking the club away. I get caught in a 4-6 inch twitch behind the ball and unable to take the club back, I can feel the tension build with every twitch and my body and I tends to drift about a 1/2 inch behind the ball with every twitch. I can end up being about 4-6 inches behind the ball when I finally fire the club. You can even see my legs twitch every time I try to fire the club. Well I don't want to bore your readers, but I could use some help with this, I do love my golf, it gets me outside with my pals. But I need to get pass this or I'll end up quitting golf. I know it's a mental problem, and I do try to swing with no thoughts in my mind... but your body knows what your trying to do..... Please HELP.... Thanks for what you do....

When I watch your videos, Rick, is the closest I ever come to wishing I lived in England. I am an 81 year old lifetime mediocre golfer. I love my country, and would never seriously consider living anywhere else, but sometimes I wish I lived in England and could just meet you and tell you how much I enjoy your videos and obvious love of the game. Keep up the good work. You still produce the best KZbin content out there. I especially love your videos playing with Guy. You two really project the feeling of twoates who really enjoy each other's company. It's obvious why you are still the king of golfing KZbin.

I love this Rick. To misquote Yogi Berra, " 90% of the game is 100% mental. I really like the way you address this by providing clear simple instruction on the way you see the game. I find a lot of instructional videos give you too much information. Its not that the information is wrong. Its just too many words and too many things to think about. Sometimes its not about technique. Its about your mental approach. I am 73 years old and don't expect to shed 5 strokes off my game with some miracle cure to my ball striking but I still strive to improve every time I approach that first tee. Thank you for keeping it simple .

Also important to note that reading more break and missing high typically means the next putt is shorter and does not tend to get away from you like it can when missed low and be 4+ feet away. That is what I have found to help me some.

another awesome video rick! i have 3 more that help me enormously: 1. when your playing partners putt, assuming their ball is on a similar line as yours, watch closely what their ball does. 2. read the green from the other side of the hole, 180 deg. from where you're putting. if the break is uncertain, you'll often be surprised at what you see. 3. when making a putting stroke, think "smooth and tension free" during your stroke. this will reduce the number of pushes and pulls.

Rick, great vid. Thank you. One tip you could possibly add is for people to try and pick the specific part of the hole they want the ball to roll into from, like a clock face. Golfers can tend to see the front of the hole generally as the entry point for all their putts, which while understandable, is not the widest part of the hole for a breaking putt. So for example, if it's a breaking right to left putt, even though the widest entry point is usually between say 4 o'clock and 5.30, depending on the strength of the break (i.e. if 6 o'clock is the closest point to the player), they still somehow see the 6 o'clock point as the entry point. After all, it is the widest point from their view when they're putting. If we can see/feel the entry point this can help us commit, and help prevent us "chickening out" from going high enough. Next time, have a look at the hole from the entry you want the ball to take. Just quickly. If your brain can see the ball entering at say 4 o'clock you will probably 1. be more willing to roll it high enough and 2. benefit by having the ball entering the hole at it's widest entry point, a double benefit. Cheers.

I'm using all these tips to tune up my putting. Here's one that I use on the practice green. On the course, I only get ONE shot at each putt. Instead of hitting multiple balls from the same spot, I simulate this 'ONE shot' on the practice green. First, I place a ball as far away from a hole that I will realistically be. Could be thirty or forty feet, maybe more. Then another ball about the same distance, but maybe ten feet from the first (different approach to the hole) so I will be 'practicing' two different putts. The goal is to get the first putt of each ball close enough to the hole to have a really makable second putt. The ultimate goal is to eliminate that 3rd and 4th putt. Side benefit-- if you hit the first putt bad enough, you get to practice shorter, but still difficult putts.

I love the tip of a tee upside down as a target! I've been trying this around the house and that little bit of positive feedback when knocking the tee over is surprisingly satisfying! I also tried the warm up drill of getting the green speed by putting to the edge of the green from short, medium, and long range before a par 3 round yesterday and I was even par after 5 holes for the first time in my life! My putting was dialed in. Thank you!

If I have a slick downhill putt I usually will hit off the toe of my putter. This will take some of the speed off my putt and if I don't make the putt the ball usually stops close to the hole for an easy tap in for my next putt. I really enjoyed the first and last bits of advice you gave. Judge the speed of the green first and use a smaller aiming point in practice putting. Well done sir.

My uncle always taught me to putt to a man hole. Don’t putt to the hole, try to make it within a foot foot an a half somewhere around it. Probably the single best putting advice I ever got and when I’m struggling this is what I go to. Especially if you find yourself three putting.

Solid advice. The single thing that helped my putting was (see #2) solid contact. However, I find it’s due to moving the hips while putting. DO NOT move the hips and solid contact come 90+% of the time. This allows distance and speed control which is critical as the amount of break is determined by speed.

Tip 7 is a belter Rick. It reminds me of one of the worlds greatest cricket batsmen who had a Test average of 99. The great Don Bradman used to practice hitting a golf ball with a stump up against a wall so when he was faced with a cricket ball and cricket bat it was so much easier for him to make perfect contact. I'm going to adopt these tips for the future.

Gt advice. Thanks. A Malaysian lady golf pro is also advising how to get feel the green speed by long putting 3 or 4 balls. I tried, it works for me. Practising at home definitely helps. Centering the ball on putter mid point definitely helps. Yet another method which works for me to bend down and use shorter shaft length. My golf pals can't believe it. it is almost like snooker. Not sure if it is legal.
@patrickwall85172 жыл бұрын
All of these tips are great. Another tip that goes along with watching your putt go past the hole is that if someone in your group has a putt on a similar line to yours and is putting before you watch it, it can help you get a read on how much your putt will break as well as the speed.

Good tips Rick and great presentation as usual ,but there is one that is beyond our control. I have never come across a practice green on the level of courses that most viewers play on that is the same speed as the actual course greens, so tend to use the range or warm up net before play
