Living in Guadalajara, MX, I've found 10 local, non-commercialized, tequilerías, that are just as fire as Fortaleza. There's a little family-owned factory near the town of tequila that still makes the tequila with the original techniques and materials. It's called "Don Tan" and their 700 ml bottles are only $25. They are not looking to scale outside their down home business model because they make their tequila to preserve the original way of making and that is their only mission as a tequila factory.

@ems8602Ай бұрын

I once drank a 15 year old of "Campo Azul". My parents are from Jesus Maria Jalisco. Me being a good son, volunteered to clean out their garage & found me a vintage start up bottle form the early 90's. Kept on the shelf for about 3 years & had a friend from Jesus Maria visit me. I crack it open & it was unbelievable, the tequila gods were among us, after the last drop, we just sat & look at one another and said wow! ... never ever has that happend & it was a 1st ever for me.

The tequila that you enjoyed was made with agave at least 6 years old. Another good batch is coming. There is plenty of agave everywhere you look, it's blue, and factories are not buying because they got their own supply. People will start making their own tequila with agave of 6 or seven years old, and get ready for the black marquet. Farmers will not let their crops rot this time.

While I am not a doctor, I would say that there are a number of factors in whether you will get a hangover or not. The distillery I visited is artesenal and only used a natural food die that makes the aged amber color consistent as different oak barrels from different suppliers will impart a different lighter or darker amber color and they want to be consistent. The guide freely admitted to the additive that is made from something natural here in Mexico. BTW Jalisco is pronounced Haliscio the J sounds like an H in Spanish and the I isoubds like a hard e. I have pretty much every 100% blue weber agave tequila you showcase here. I pretty much agree that you don't want additives, but is up to 1% added glycerin, oak extract, caramel coloring, and sugar-based syrups, really that aggreges? 1% of a liter is about 2 teaspoons, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. It is really more a matter of do you like it at the price compared to others, and can you get the others at msrp in your area. Fortaleza is awesome, but impossible to get in most places at msrp. Additive free with clean fresh taste. They may not be as complex as some great tequilas but-for me-the notes they are lacking I don't find that appealing. El Tesoro and Fortaleza are very nice. G4 & Ocho are high quality but I just don't like them. That's just my taste. Arette blanco is my go to sipper and Tres Agaves blanco makes an outstanding Margarita. I was surprised to see this. I always thought that only the Mixto tequilas had added sugars, etc. I thought that if it reads 100% Agave, there were no additives. My son bought me a bottle of Adictivo Anejo last year and I also have the resposado, and it's so sweet and tasty that it was hard to believe that it couldn't have sugar in it. It taste more like a light whiskey than tequila. It's a nice drink but I like to taste the Agave.

Very good information, I went to Hacienda Patron several years ago, before it was bought by Bacardi, I did not observe any additives added in the process. As a matter of fact, it was a very rewarding and learning experience. I am a Professional beer brewer, but not an expert in tequila, even though I am Mexican; how can you detect the additives? Some of them, I had tasted the artificial flavors, added caramel flavor, glycerin its used very often in distilled spirits. It´s there a test, other than tasting method to detect them? The tequila master from Patron was the same from Siete Leagues, unfortunately, he died several years ago.

They are not gonna tell you if they adding additives to their tequila..
@schoolofwineandspiritsАй бұрын
I am in Mazatlan right now. I have visited agave spirits producers but have not made it to Jalisco...yet. Additives are allowed up to 1% while still being able to label it 100% agave. There are tests but the mouthfeel and sweetness will tell you most of what you need to know. Patron is a hard one. Roca Patron is definitely additive free. Siete Leguas developed Patron for its founders and was the primary producer before they built Hacienda Patron. The flagship Patron is questionable. But, the reporting may be wrong. If so, I apologize. toPatron. Would love to see you in the community.

@ Thanks for your reply, you said what I already knew but wanted you to say it. I started bringing bottles of DonJulio back to the US in 1995 when it was owned by Tres Magueyes. It was my favorite tequila and I tried many. It was very smooth and clean. I was very happy that it was finally exported to the US and I had turned so many people on to it that I should have been paid. When they got bought out they did a slow frog in the slow boiling pot story by changing the recipe little by little. I didn’t really notice the change until it was done. It is still better than Casa Amigo and Patron but not by much. It’s sad but thanks to people like yourself, you can expose them and I thank you for doing so at last in the comment section.
