Feel like the #1 people miss when buying bikes like these is that they’re motocross bikes, and need a lot more maintenance than they realise 😂 Kinda makes me cringe when I see comments of people who are younger saying “I got a crf250r as my first bike” like yeah, they’re great bikes and make better power than any other dirt bike. But cmon, not as a first bike. 😂 see too many videos of them blowing up and comments like that make u realise why they do in the first place, people don’t maintain them 😂 In my opinion if you want a dirtbike and it’s your first bike, stick to something more reliable. Yes you lose power but you learn maintenance in the process. And if any beginner is reading, like he said, these bikes have heaps of torque, which is a reason why u see so many videos of people on them for the first time accidentally popping wheelies. Another reason to start on a less powered, more reliable bike. Anyway my point is, mx bikes are great if u know what ur getting into. But if ur anything less than someone with atleast some experience with bikes, don’t get one. The videos of them online back it up 😂 pros ride them hard, beginners loop them and blow them up. Examples of easier and more reliable dirtbikes are options like, crf250f, any of the Yamaha TTR’s, any of the Kawasaki KLX’s. By no means are they as powerful as 125, 250 or 450 mx bikes, and anything in between. But they’re way more forgiving, and chances are it’ll take you a long time of riding them before u master them and wanna move up in power.

i agree with you on everything except that starting on a more reliable bike teaches you maintenance better. i honestly think it does the opposite bc they are able to take so much more abuse without having routine maintenance done that it can sometimes make people think all bikes are like that and then they may not maintain their MX bike for that reason whenever they decide to get one. all my friends that started on trail bikes haven’t changed their oil a single time bc there’s this belief that they just will not blow up no matter what you do to them, which is true until it isn’t😭😭

I wish I knew these things when I got my first 2-stroke Honda CR80, at age 5 ... Not Just go and get a used (working and old) 2-stroke dirtbike, something like a Honda CR250 '89 (the one that I have now) Why? 1. 2-stoke are way better than 4-stroke (if you want a 4-stroke get a regular street bike). 2-stroke are just more fun and they need way less maintenance than a 4-stroke (the last time I did maintenance to my Honda CR was 5 years ago) 2. Get an OLD 2-stroke dirtbike, they require way less maintenance and are just build tougher and heavier than new dirtbikes, like I mentioned in point #1 3. Go for '85 to '05 models (Honda, Kawasaki, Susuki or Yamaha (in that order)), you can throw these things from a cliff or rev them to the max and they will be ok (not like the new bikes that get locked or the motor blown just because you rev them a little bit) The only maintenance that you have to do on those bikes is just oil change and inflate the tires

If you're looking to get into dirtbikes, maybe you shouldn't only not be looking to get a brand new one, but also I wouldn't recommend a 450 either. A used 250 is imho a good starter bike to get familiar with. As you stated, the torque on a 450 takes some getting used to. My history of dirtbikes: '92 RM 125 2-stroke / 2019 CRF 450L. Current commuter: 2020 Yamaha T700

I’ve never road a dirt bike In my life lol but I’d like to Invest In one sometime soon. I was thinking of going for the YZ450F which I assume Is the most average and basic but I’m not really sure what I should start with for a beginner.

2 strokes don’t have valves… huh!
@MalachiJetter9 ай бұрын
there is a reed valve in the crankcase to keep air/fuel mix from blowing back through the carburetor. at the cylinder, the piston itself acts as a valve blocking the intake ports in the side of the cylinder. a little different than a 4 stroke
