Maybe I'm the only one but I love looking for gear. It's like a game where you you always need to find the balance between 1. durability, 2. weight, 3. cost, 4. versatility, and if you play on hardmode, then 5. sustainability (e.g., no ziploc bags, no plastic sponge for cookware, biodegradable, etc.) These are pretty much the things I look for. If you're just starting you don't need to keep all these in mind, you'll start adding more criteria as you get more into the hobby xD. Just DON'T YOU DARE LITTER.

This is helpful. I’ve started hiking by myself and I’m only 16. I have learned a few extra things that help me out from your videos

I would recommend taking the Sawyer Squeeze over the Sawyer Mini. Thee bigger Sawyer Squeeze would let you filter water faster than the Mini.

Your comment that "ultralight hiking is like a disease" makes me smile. I'm with you about getting something "in between" that's durable and doesn't require a lot of expense upfront and extra care to keep it from getting damaged in use. Great advice overall in both parts of this video series.

Brilliant. The ultralight bug is a real thing that often leads to being ultra miserable...

One recommendation I have about food is that gels are an excellent source if you maybe are starting to get tired and you're about to start a big climb. Rip a Hammer Gel or your favorite brand and your energy comes back almost immediately. Also, making your own granola bars is extremely easy and you can customize them to add your favorite ingredients or whatever size is perfect for you.

Ultralight isn’t necessarily about buying lightweight expensive gear. It’s about bringing only what you need. Like your tip about not bringing a big knife, a bunch of random “survival” gear, or heavy foods with lots of waste is an ultralight tip.

Alternetive option to the knife choice. Ditch the big knife for a smal one and also bring a axe. It is know that knife loose vs bear but not axe. Thats why Vikings had axes on hikes.

No need to get hiking insurance if you are hiking in the UK - our mountain rescue organisations are voluntary and don't charge, neither do the police/military if helicopters involved.

There are other survival channels. I personally come here to learn about the hiking, not survival. More lessons about hiking solo only would be Perfect. Knowledge about survival gear is still very good.

What if you live in America where there’s actually bears.

Unless you’re in like Alaska or Wyoming you are dealing with black bears. Black bears aren’t aggressive and keeping your food secure and scaring them off with noise is enough. If you’re in places with Grizzly bears, you can bring bear spray. Yellowstone requires you bring bear spray.

This is the most embarrassing list of things to not know or not quickly figure out. What i wish i knew was how to decide to sesrch for water or hike 20 miles to the next drainage. Or what to do if youre 60 miles in and a bear breaks into your bear can.

a great strategy to not overspend on ultrilight gear is to spend all your money on some other hobby and then go full hobo without feeling the dreaded GAS

Hold up, that's a "big ass knife"?

1) I think water filters are not enough. You need to boil the filtered water anyway. If you haven't got sick with only filtering your water it just means you've been lucky, yet. 2) Normal paper sprays are useless against bears (if you were joking you should make it more obvious, some people might just believe without any critical thinking). You need specialized stuff, specifically, throwable and noisy-flashy things -- you need to prevent the bear from coming close. If it's already got closer than several meters (10, for instance), basically, you're pretty much f***ed, your chances drop drastically.

Yeah you call that a big a** knife? I'm not a buschcrafter but I know what valie the knife has. You need at least 3 or 2 + a saw if you're going out for more than a day. Also that knife you're holding is a gas station garbage.
@nicksirois12513 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry...you think that’s a big knife!???! I have that everyday, when hiking I carry a fixed 7 inch blade
