You have a way of explaining things in a way that's easy to understand and pick up. You have helped me stay current now that I work from home and don't have others around to bounce ideas or tech issues off. You've proven you CAN teach an old dog new tricks =). At this point it's more than competition I'm afraid. The level of performance we have from Photoshop is ridiculously low compared to what the de facto standard should be. I have a top notch computer and I can't believe how laggy and unresponsive Photoshop is. Also, we're in 2022, I work with high megapixel cameras and huge files and Photoshop keep crashing randomly no matter how I keep everything up to date (which is their default answer to any issue). It is so frustrating and I slowly but surely came to the conclusion that they either don't put enough resouces into solving bugs and improving performance or have such a huge technical debt and backlog they simply can't do it.

I used to be a Photoshop and Adobe die-hard, since the early 90's, but since the release of the Affinity products, I'm totally converted to Affinity (price tag alone makes it a no-brainer). If you get all three apps (Photo, Designer, and Publisher) you can also take advantage of their "Studio" workflow, which lets you work with Designer and Photo elements without having to open them, while you are working in Publisher. I find Affinity apps to have a much more intuitive workflow and for several tasks are noticeably faster than the Adobe counterparts. A note on your reference to the icon differences -- If you don't like the color icons you can switch to monochromatic ones in the preferences.

Adobe switching to CC was probably great as a business move, but that made so many professionals to start looking for another options.First of all, stability was thrown out the window with random and constant updates messing things up. Creating ever evolving spaghetti over the old core didn't help. Sure you were able to opt out of constant updates but that just takes away the point of CC. Then there's the Achilles heel of not actually owning your copy of program. If and whenever Adobe decides to pull down their service, that's it. No money back. Can't trust to have backups of your cloud projects etc. There's no mention of any guarantee whatsoever against any case where their services end and customers being able to recover their data. At least not that I was able to find when I tried to research for it.

I bought Affinity around 2017, but I didn't start using it heavily until about 1-2 years later when I moved over completely. Overall I am pretty happy with the direction that they have gone with Affinity, especially Photo, as a concept artist. The improvements to the brush engine, the addition of Linked Layers, more non-destructive adjustment layers and filters like Liquify, etc. have made me glad I switched. My new super computer rig that I built around November last year has made me appreciate the improvements done to performance with 1.10 even more. 16-bit and 32-bit canvas support in Affinity are so much better than in Photoshop, with 32-bit being extremely limiting and slow even on my new PC. The Affinity Suite still has a lot of room to grow, but after having used it exclusively over Photoshop for about 4 years I have no plans of going back unless I absolutely have to for some job. Photo may not have the same polish as Photoshop in some areas, but there are still a lot of things I appreciate that made me realise just how ancient Photoshop is to work with. The fact that I can have any type of blur or transformation as a non-destructive layer without needing Smart Objects, or that I can create actual true vector shapes with a live updating canvas when picking colours are features I just can't live without. Not to mention regular transformations with the Move Tool is just so much simpler and convenient than the Photoshop method, with the only thing I really miss is perspective transforms by ctrl+L clicking the nodes like you can in Photoshop. Finally, the cross-compatibility between Photo, Designer, and Publisher is absolutely unmatched. Affinity has a strongly built foundation that I can't wait to see being expanded upon by fixing usability issues big and small. In all honesty I am a bit concerned about the future of Photoshop if Adobe do not start addressing some of its legacy code problems. Heck, they might have to make a rebooted Photoshop with modern code as a foundation to make that happen. Also, just have to say that I love your videos! It's been fun learning to recreate some of your tutorials inside of Affinity. I hope you will make Affinity tutorials in the future. I would definitely watch them! :)

G'day I have switched from Photoshop to Affinity about 3 years now, and I haven't missed PS a single bit. As a graphic designer, one feature of Serif has over Adobe is in the way you can change from within Affinity photo, a Affinity designer document with out changing programmes. Also, Affinity saves a file differently than Photoshop. If you are working on a extremely large file in Affinity and you change only a layer and you want to save it. Affinity, write over, and save only the area that you change on the file. It's a lot quicker than Photoshop, where the whole file is saved. I have done an experiment and saved the same 600gb document with 80-plus layers and alter the same item in the same layer. In affinity, it took about 30 seconds, but the same alteration in Photoshop took 15 minutes. Havagooday Greg

Another benefit of Photo: Jumping between Serif programs feels natural, and it feels like the same project gets the same treatment. In Adobe, I feel like one project belongs to one program and resists. Picking colors in Affinity outside the program area works great - compared to the trick of holding down the mouse button and dragging. Handling and editing a PDF file in affinity is fabulous while in illustrator or photoshop it's a pain - something they should be ashamed of. Despite the language limitation in Affinity, you can insert your own dictionary (e.g. Polish) and check for errors and correct them automatically in the program - thanks to the dictionary from Libre Office. The performance of the program itself and the compression of work files is 100 times better than Adobe. Plus, Affinity supports virtually all Adobe plugins (except those based on masks).

Affinity steps closer with every update they release, and it's becoming my go-to. Besides the things pointed out here, one of the other things I really like is Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher, are all built around the same core programming, they work together better than Ps, Ai, and Ind, less saving and re-opening files in other programs to get things done, something that was always a time wasting pain, but for some reason really grinds my gears now that I know it can be done so seamlessly. Affinity is doing a lot to enhance productivity and workflow with the features they're incorporating, something that's in line with the part of the industry I'm in. In the 20+ years I've been doing this, there was no single brand program suite that offered a realistic alternative for professional designers, or an affordable option for the next generation of budding designers wanting to learn, and I'm happy to see it. I think everyone will benefit from them having a competitor, that always fuels the fire of innovation from all parties.

@@PiXimperfect I think problem is sitting deep inside Photoshop core. Adobe still can't cleanup their filters. So now we have legacy filters like old "gausain blur" for example, and new filters like "blur gallery". And it is a mess like old and new Control Panel in Windows existing still together because it is so old but important piecie of coding, that the only way of changing it is to do all new from scratch. This would be a revolution not evolution. But honestly I think it's time when Photoshop need that, because there are moments in Photoshop when you feel how old code that is and how it drags down workflow or performance with today hardware.

I think this a great feature as you may not need such fine tune control over the liquify. So in the example those divisions could have been made much much smaller for the adjustment of the hair. BTW, I mainly use PS but am learning through a Trial Version Affinity Photo. Not sure I'll just use 1 over the other because PS has some Amazing AI tools built it now. However, IF I was on a budget (I am on a fixed monthly income) then choosing Affinity would be a Great Choice. Both softwares are tools and YOUR personnal workflow and use case might even be "That" edge case. LOL. I love that we DO have choices though with other programs stepping up there "Feature Game". Cheers! Stay Healthy and Stay Sane.

Thanks for the video. I switched to AP from PS due to issues with releases back in 2019 and not for the costs. I still have GIMP as well, as it was my first editing tool back in 2010. Whatever get the job done. I always learn something new with your videos.

Excluding price, my problem with photoshop is the grind of working. The grind to produce the same results between the tools is much less in affinity.

I am working with Affinity Photo since 1.5 and doing tutorials (in German;) and I think it is very great. I would say, if you are working years with Photoshop, you should not change. But if you start today with editing, give the ecosystem of affinity a shot. You are able to do 99% of things you can imagine. It is very sad that Serif is not getting the probs they deserve, cause the do a very good job. Greetings from Germany and keep up the great work. I love your chanel.

I'm really happy to see this video. Choices can be made also on a preofession level, what are you doing for living. For me as a hobby photographer the choise is not Lightroom+Photoshop (started with BibbleLabs, then Lightroom), but now Capture1+AffinityPhoto, although i think if i can't achive what i want by making the picture and some work in C1, then it is caused by any other reason, when i try to capture/draw a dream or fantasy. Sorry for my poor english. But many thanks and respect for this video.

I actually moved from Affinity when I was strictly on PC, to PS when I moved to Mac(didn't wanna buy Affinity again). It was a very tough transition at first. I love PS now, but in some ways Affinity just really simplifies certain processes. Great video!

Good to see this take, people are too often biased by anti Adobe or anti subscription or non-pros complaining about cost. Use what you want, but "gets the job done" isn't a good mantra for professionals, we want the best tools for the job, that allow us to do what we need.

Fantastic video! We use Adobe at work, but I use Affinity at home, and while many advanced workflow tools are missing in the Affinity apps, once you get used to the speed and interchangeability in Affinity, it makes Adobe a frustrating experience. It definitely feels as if each Adobe app is made by an isolated team that never interacts with other Adobe products. I’d love to see you make more Affinity tutorials!

Nice! I’m learning Affinity Photo. I was about to say use smart object but I like that you can paint on Affinity photo layer with resized image while keeping resolution. True you can paint on smart object only if double clicked but not within current scene so it’s annoying. Amazing Affinity! Keep it up so I can fully convert. 😀

I kinda got the feeling the for most people, Photoshop is really just something to shut other people's mouth off because most of its advantage to Affinity Photo is rather niche and not even related to photo editing, and a lot of people are pirating Photoshop without using those features because they don't know any other software that does the same job. And now that Affinity hits 2.0, it's a lot better than what's shown in this video (well, mainly for nondestructive workflow things), and there's even less reason to keep bothering with Photoshop.

Also the price is insane. Adobe just raised their subscription prices, even though they are raking in money, so from principle I looked for alternative and landed on Affinity Photo. Switching was a breeze and there aren't a lot of Photoshop features I'm missing and usually there's a workaround at least. I'm glad Affinity is developing this in their own direction, I was a bit worried early that they are almost too similar and have copied also frustrating things from Photoshop, but having used it for a while I couldn't be happier. Btw. I also switched out After Effects and Premiere and the free alternatives are just amazing: Da Vinci Resolve and Natron are what I landed on and they are not just replacements, they are a lightyear skip in workflow and potential. They do take more time to get used to than Affinity though, but I recommend it.

@@z3dar Technically those who would actually pay for Adobe stuffs wouldn't mind the price increase anyway, because they kinda have to have a stable job for Adobe stuffs to be "worth it", and even the whole suite wouldn't make a dent to their income. For anyone that either lost that stable job that worths keeping Adobe stuffs for, or have always been a freelancer in the visual designing field, well, low cost perpetual license software it is. That way, even if you can't earn it back from freelancing it's at least a fair price to pay for the hobby.

The toolbar comparison made me giggle. When I first used Affintiy I thought it looked really ugly, cause I was taught that simplifying and readability are key to good design. But since then I got used to it and also read and learned more illustrative takes in designing logos or icons. That it doesn't always has to be super clean and highly geometric even though I'm pretty fond of those kinds of designs haha. Glad you included the text size options. Feature I instantly fell in love with cause I like my headlines BIG. And the live preview for basically everything is so handy. Especially if you're someone that isn't particularly good in processing visual ideas in your mind. I need to see what I'm getting in order to decide "Nope doesn't feel right. Nodge it there. Change the color a hint" and so on. Affinity is an absolute blessing for people who do occasional visual work but still need high quality or are starting out and can't afford Adobe. After my student license expired and I didn't happen to work in the field I couldn't afford or justify getting Adobe but I eventually needed Ai, Ps and Id again for my own work and Affinity is just that. Got all three programs on Sale. And for my occasional video editing needs I use the free version of Davinci Resolve.

I agree that one of Photoshop's biggest weaknesses is that filters are destructive, and to make them "smart" (yeah right, Adobe), you have to put them inside a container ironically dubbed "Smart Object". I don't know why it's such an ordeal for them not to make filters adjustment layers. I know it's possible because things like Liquify are applied as nondestructive effects in After Effects, and you can actually animate effects, so it must not be that difficult to implement in a static image editor like Photoshop. As Corridor Digital pointed out, a lot of these shortcomings stem from Adobe's complacency, as the "industry-standard" software maker. The codebases of their programs are ancient, bloated and often unstable, and there's little incentive to change. Some of the very basic features had taken forever to be implemented correctly, and yet they keep churning out all these fany-pantsy AI-based features, which, granted, are nice, but how about just fix all the existent problems, make the existent features work as intended, instead of trying to impress with new experimental features? Why pouring your resources into developing bells and whistles, rather than quality-of-life functions?

Thanks for showing Affinity :) I've been using this for years. And it works pretty well. I know it's not "the king", but I can use a lot of my Photoshop skills in this software. The lower price is a big thing for me. little fun fact: You can move the "shadow" with the mouse. The Effects panel. Has a button for it :D. Little confusing issues with affinity. But hey, nobody is perfekt. - I Promote Affinity all the time! - I like this App!

Great video as always Unmesh ! It would be great if you did the a similar video about GIMP, it's free and any features there would be a bonus for any PS user. Granted GIMP doesn't have smart filters but it's really good to be used in combination with PS, for example the "color to alpha" tool in GIMP is really powerful and intuitive and the workarounds in PS are clunky and time consuming, I think you should look into it.

New subscriber here - these are all great updates to bring to Photoshop. I like that you're calling out these "quality of life" updates for Photoshop, opposed to "features" that one software might hav over another. I recently sent Adobe a list of features/improvements for Adobe Animate and they were at least receptive. I think you should submit a "feature" for photoshop and just include the link to this video! 👍 In defense of Adobe, they definitely should have these updates, but I think the core of Photoshop would need to be overhauled. You can tell in recent years Adobe has been "bolting on" new features to their core software. Even Smart Objects are saved as a separate file to help users work more non destructively - but it doesn't exactly feel integrated, right? Filters, scripts, brushes, are all appended separately. Sometimes we'll get a new panel layout or a new shortcut becomes standardized that previously wasn't there, but I'd bet something like non-destructive scaling would take a pretty big change. I wanna see it though! We're paying Adobe for something! Thanks much for sharing this. As a full-time Photoshopper, sometimes ya don't even know what you're missing because you've built ways to work around everything.
