This is truly one of the finest and most detailed videos I’ve ever watched. You’ve spent a lot of time and conducted thorough research-hats off to you for the hard work! This will be incredibly helpful for beginners, showing that it’s not just the pen that matters but the surface as well. Thank you so much

Thanks. I made this so people don't give up on their pens thinking it's the pen or their skill that's the problem. Because most of the time it is the surface. I almost gave up initially because of it.

This was a great demo video. Everything was clearly explained and demoed. The chart she shows easily compares all 3D pen surfaces. I feel more confident now on how to proceed with my new 3D pen.

Glad it was helpful! Surface can really make or brake a project. Lot of people who are having trouble think is their lack of skill or problem with the pen but then are totally fine once they find the right surface. The bridging in this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5mkd4OCecqJgpI is a good example of how the same person and the same pen can either do it or not on different surfaces.

It is videos like this that show that just because you don't already know something doesn't mean you are foolish ... it just means you are ready to learn. Thank you for demonstrating how things can go wrong. Great analysis - wish there were more videos that actually taught!

Thanks. The wrong surface can completely sabotage your project which most beginners don't realize. I thought this will save some people a bunch of frustration. Also see this one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4GaiqaOjNuVbq8

I know. I almost gave up after my first session with my pen because of the surface. Not having a clue why I can't make anything.

This is great information for a complete beginner (Me) so i've been pouring over info online etc but wasn't sure on my setup, you've done a great concise job ( I was wondering about that 3D mates back, and you cleared that up) explaining the fundamentals of suitable services...Earned a sub. P.s One assumes you could just use pre frosted Plexi-glass/Acrylic? Yes?
@3DPENDEN
@3DPENDEN Жыл бұрын
Not sure what pre frosted plexiglass actually is. I always sprayed my own. Have you watched this one? kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4GaiqaOjNuVbq8

@@3DPENDEN I was wondering if it came pre frosted? Would it be possible to use sandpaper on them to give that texture? (The spray is an expensive fare)
@3DPENDEN
@3DPENDEN Жыл бұрын
@@SeeDaRipper... I get your thinking: if you scratch it with a sandpaper it would stick better. However the problem here is that it actually already sticks too well to plexi. So the spray is there to insulate it a bit. If you draw on raw plexi it will stick so well you won't be able to get it off. In fact even with the spray it's a bit hard to take it off (let it cool completely and use some thin spatula tool to peel it off). So I think if you sand it it would just stick even more permanently to all the grooves you just created. And if it comes prefrosted I am not sure how they got it that way - if it's pure plexi just manufactured rough it may still stick like hell. The good news is you don't have to spray it every time you use it just once every few month so one can of spray will last you forever. And it's on sale right now. :) amzn.to/405xXlA

@@3DPENDEN Thanks for the link, but i'm based in the UK. To be fair i think the sanding of it would be true as there is less area for the PLA/ABS to stick too. I'm going to experiment as it's no difference than using a spray methinks.

Seems like a few have chimed in here. Mynt included a clear sheet with their little mat that worked fine. I must have done something wrong with the plexi. It was great to draw and trace on. But even with 4 coats of the acrylic matte, PLA at 182C still melted into the plexi and needed to be chiseled to release. My favorite so far is a particular kind of chopping mat from Dollar Tree. Has a rough side and is transparent, It melts too but at 60 cents each, they can be used a few times and still be cut into templates for other crafts. Next, I'll try the transparency sheets.
@3DPENDEN
@3DPENDEN Жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I never had that happen to the plexi (except once when I used it with 3d doodler because that has a metal nozzle and takes a bit to start it. So if I rested that on the surface the metal nozzle would make a dent). But I never melted into the plexi with the Mynt. Could there be different types of plexi? It does take a spatula or palette knife to release it. But once you get underneath it it usually just pops right off without any damage to the plexi.
@3DPENDEN

Also it has to cool down first. It doesn't release too happily if it's still warm.

@@3DPENDEN Long time for a reply but someone left a couple of sheets of 3/8 inch poly by our dumpster. Was able to cut, burn and chisel a 14X14 piece with only one crack. 3 coats of the acrylic matte and PLA at 175 did not melt the poly. However, maybe another coat or 2 of matte to see if it releases better. I might try combining your Play-Doh idea for areas with long, thin lines.

Hi, what is the sheet you used around 11min mark for Flexibility?
@3DPENDEN
@3DPENDEN Жыл бұрын
It's a transparency film for overhead projectors. Mine says "write on" and it's the Office Max brand. The picture of the box is around the 9:12 mark in the video. They come also in inkjet and laser printer versions. But the "write on" works and it's the least expensive. I am not sure if they all work the same and also if there is any difference between different brands. So test briefly before you do anything time consuming. Good luck.
