@kevdmiller6 жыл бұрын
I was a game developer in the mid 90's when games were starting to transition from 2d to 3d. At the time there were different ways to do this. With the limitations of real time 3d (processing power wasn't ready for it...my first 3d game allowed for a maximum of a glorious THIRTY polygons on screen at a time or the frame rate would start getting below 8 frames a second!) a lot of games then would actually render sprites from 3d art...the advantage of this was that you could get better looking 3d characters, even though they couldn't be truly 3d in the game. The backgrounds could be done the same way if gameplay was 2d, or for 3d gameplay they could use a hybrid--3d environments with 2d rendered sprites. Then there was a sudden thrust to make all games 3d...problem was, the tech being where it was, 3d looked mostly horrible...but it seemed that the whole industry was insistent on jumping in completely...so for a few years, most games were destined to look crappy. (though some utilized it better than others...Mario 64 for example didn't have fantastic graphics, but it worked well with what it had and had great game design that has made the game age well even today) So my point is that, in my opinion, pretty much till the PS2 era, I felt that MOST games went 3d way too early.
@PsychoholicSlag836 жыл бұрын
Kevin Miller I remember being pretty unimpressed with the first 3d games. Specially the ones from series who jumped from beautiful 2d graphics to blocky, un-detailed, 3d models
@kevdmiller6 жыл бұрын
Exactly! One of the games that stood out as loosing something when they went 3d was the Monkey Island series. The series had pretty solid 2d graphics (for the time) and then they switched to real-time 3d that looked pretty awful. They got better(like all games), but that first generation didn't look good at all.
@zosxavius6 жыл бұрын
You are certainly right that they all jumped in early. Still without people pioneering 3d graphics and driving the market for GPUs the landscape might have been very different. Imagine if 3Dfx remained in business for instance. It took the PSX to make the PS2 and I don't think it could have happened any other way. All the companies had to get experience in 3d graphics and certainly learned from the successes and failures that they had. There were actually a TON of PSX games that I loved despite their primitive 3d graphics because they were just so much fun to play. Pretty hard to knock games like the first N64 zelda as well. Or Metal Gear Solid. All of those games paved the way for the amazing games that came out for the PS2. Look, you could argue that Star Fox is a great example of a 3D game that came too early. Looking back at it now, it isn't all that impressive even for the time. Especially when you compare to say Virtua Racer on the Genesis. But, at the time it was so much fun and totally acceptable to all of us. 3d graphics on the SNES! Amazing! We were all blown away. I especially liked the little intro sequence. I am glad that developers and console makers took the risk and didn't wait another generation. I think it paid off. The public clearly wanted (and still wants) 3d games and a lot of great games came out that we all had fun playing. Win-win? It's always easy to look back and find plenty of bad examples of any emerging media or genre.
@kevdmiller6 жыл бұрын
You are right; to get better, it was necessary for the industry to put their hat into the ring. And some of those early games were great in their way, just due to excellent design. I guess what I'm saying is that maybe not EVERY game had to be real-time 3d. (yes I know the "EVERY" game is an exaggeration, but not by much) I just felt like some games could have waited an iteration or two before making the switch. But technology tends to not work that way...society rarely *waits* for tech to be ready...it's the nature of economics...industry players have to go full speed ahead or risk getting left behind.

Correction: Its sequel WOULD'VE been better if they'd gone right back to basics instead of going for artificial Hero/Dark balance and doubling down on what was decidedly un-Sonic-esque about it (playstyles having nothing to do with high-speed athleticism-worked for SA1's story as Chaos created complications but not SA2's as that shit was over; upgrade items-bad enough that they kill pacing in order to give their finders either moves that they should naturally have ITFP because they're hyper-athletic zip-by ravagers or highly bizarre and situational bullshit but now demand that you comb main gameplay stages for them often necessitating obscenely offtrack detours inappropriate for a series themed around fast heroism; increased emphasis on humans other than Eggman-not that that's inherently bad as it communicates the series's world, just that it doesn't need to be an overbearing trait).

I was actually surprised not to see the Castlevania games from the 64 on this list. Also, I think you should take this same basic concept and make 2 new lists. A list of game series that actually got better after switching to the third dimension, and a list of game series that for weird reasons went from 3D to 2D (like Resident Evil: Gaiden ..... sorry, just cringed a little).
@meikahidenori6 жыл бұрын
Actually, not surprised. Those games weren't as bad as people say they were and at the time there was far worse 3d outings than castlevania.

Of course, back in my day we had it tough. None of this 2D malarky. We had text adventures and even though you could GO NORTH, LOOK UP or KILL GOLLUM WITH SWORD (the ring's mine now you little froggy wierdo!) we didn't really have anything bar one dimension and that was time. Lots and lots of time. Mostly spent waiting for stuff to load of tape, go wrong, swear at the cassette deck and then start again.

Man, the images in that Hobbit game took forever to draw in. Infocom text games were much more fun because of that. I feel you on the tape drive. Tunnels of Doom on the TI99-4A for me. I’d describe it as a modem handshake noise that squeals on for three to five minutes, but fewer and fewer people were ever exposed to that sound. Which makes me feel old. And that’s coming from someone who played Stone Age games like Oubliette and Empire on PLATO networked machines as a kid.

I can hardly believe that a list like that skipped "Worms" series... I mean sure, the graphics were still very much Worm-like, so this was easy on the eyes, but the third dimension turned a simple, funny, enjoyable artilery game into control nightmare with weird camera angles, giving one the impression said camera had a mind of its own (sure hope that WASN'T a foreshadow for SkyNet or something :D). As a result, the player couldn't properly execute the easiest shots and not in a funny way, turning the game into more of a chore than a pleasant skirmish that ended friendships ^^' This also affected the eyes though as the camera had the tendency to suddenly jump from one view to the other, making players dizzy or, at the very least, greatly confused. Certainly, much like many of this list's entries, "Worms" don't need 3D.

3D Tetris just reminds me of how we got imaginary numbers in mathematics because solving quadratic equations to the third power (cubrics) was done geometrically and negative numbers weren't a thing yet. We now need those imaginary numbers to complete vital physics equations!
