***NOTE - The two mods in use in this game are Extended Policy Cards and Detailed Map Tacks - they don't change anything about the game, they are just UI improvements.*** There are obviously a lot of things that you can add to this - and I could have expanded upon what I mentioned in here even more so and could do whole videos on each segment (the districting one is just like...that could literally be multiple hours worth of content) - so I hope you enjoyed what I put out here! If you have any feedback or any questions about things, feel free to ask and I'll try to answer as best as possible -also 1 hour long LMAO jesus boes Here are the time stamps!! Start - 00:00 1.) Important stuff I wish someone had told me when I started playing: -Each specialty district requires 3 population to build. A city with 1 pop will only be able to build 1 district, a city with 4 can build 2, 7 pop can build 3, etc. Prioritize the districts that will be more valuable to your city as it grows, not the ones you happen to unlock first. And keep in mind that the pop is only required to unlock the district slot, not to build it or maintain it, meaning if you lock in a district at 4 pop and then build a settler that drops your city back to 3 pop, you can resume building your district even with 3 pop. -When barbarian scouts see your city, they'll get a red exclamation mark and start booking it to their camp. Do your utmost to keep those bastards from reaching the camp alive, because if they do the barbarian camp will start producing a massive amount of units that will beeline to your city. Inversely, if the scout dies before reporting back the outpost will not spawn any new units at all, even when attacked. If you ever wonder why the barb camp that only had 1 spearman in it suddenly sent a wave of 3 warriors and a slinger towards your city, it's because you let a scout reach it. -Somewhat related, barbarian scouts are the biggest cowards while scouting. They generally avoid combat and try to find your cities or run back to their camp. This means that if you have a barbarian scout and you don't know where his camp is, the best tool to keep him at bay and keep him from reporting your position is to use two scouts of your own and corral him around until you can use real units to kill him or the camp. If he decides to get aggressive and attack your scout, use both of your scouts and get a free kill. -Barbarian units can only heal if they plunder your territory. However, low hp barbarians will almost always run away and towards their camp, avoiding your units and cities. This means that if you have unit that has lost most of its hp against a barbarian unit, it's better to leave the bastard alone and let him frolic in the woods with a sliver of hp left, and hunt him down later once your unit has healed. -Bafflingly enough, despite being a bunch of dirty squatters in mud huts the barbs scale in technology with the players, and always match the tech of the most advanced civ in the game. This means barbs can attack you with better troops than you haven't even unlocked, because someone in the game did. This makes it so Babylon and Gaul ruin the game for everyone with their unique abilities to unlock mid and late game units in the first two ages of the game. They also don't require any strategics to build said units. -City-States also work like barb camps in terms of tech and unit recruitment, meaning they can get swordsmen and knights without iron, musketmen and bombards without niter, horsemen without horses, etc, potentially before you do. If you're planning on conquering them, it's best to do it early when you have even footing. -Barb camps near the coast are either incredibly dangerous or incredibly worthless depending on if you're playing a very naval centric civ like Portugal, Phoenicia or Indonesia, and extra particularly if you play as the maori or they're in the game, or if you're not and the maori aren't in the game. Once quadriremes are unlocked (and since the maori start with them unlocked, that will be turn 1), barb coastal camps will start spawning waves and waves of them and they will be hell to deal with, since you won't be able to beat their production in the early game, archers and slingers deal tickle damage to ships and you also run the risk of getting your units bombarded from the sea while attacking the barb camp. Their "scouts" are also much more dangerous since they're galleys, meaning you can't kill their scouts fast before they report back with your galleys unless you outnumber the barb galleys. If you find a coastal barb camp as a naval nation, prioritize it above all other camps and get that dealt with before you have a fleet of quadriremes making sailing, trade and exploration impossible. -Each citizen requires 2 food to work a tile. You might get excited at first when hearing about managing citizens and microing them into the best tiles, but do keep in mind that if you ignore food tiles you will lead your city to starvation. -In the ages where melee units are relevant they are better used defensively, while ranged units are better used offensively. Get used to using three rank deep formations where you keep your melee units tight together and in guard formation on the front, with ranged units dealing the damage to units safely behind them and siege units on the back to crack walls. That is of course accounting for unique units and civ abilities. The byzantines don't give a shit about siege units and use their tagmas as battering rams, while the Khmer and vietnamese have mobile siege units/ranged units that can also serve as frontline troops with high melee damage in the form of domreys and voy chiens, respectively.

Regarding barbarian tech, it at least is supposed to be that they only get techs that 50% of civs have, according to the game's code. I'm not sure if that's true because it often feels like they get the stuff that the most advanced civ has, but it could also just feel like that because early on everyone quickly gets leagues ahead of you on Deity, and I think AI tends to prioritize techs that give new units. If barbs actually get any tech that anyone has researched, then it is a bug. I'm pretty sure it at least works as intended on the civic side, because you totally can have flank and support bonuses before barbs do, as they only get those when 50% of civs have Military Tradition. As for Shipbuilding and Maori, them being in the game actually changes nothing. Barbs can always build Quadriremes from the get go, regardless of whether Maori exists in the game or not, because Shipbuilding is one of the three free techs barbs have right from the start, other two being Sailing and Bronze Working so that barbs can have Galleys and Spearmen. This is also clearly stated in the game's code, so there is no doubt about it, and the Maori thing is just myth caused by confirmation bias. Often when you see a barb Quadrireme very early, you think that Maori must be in the game, but have you actually ever proceeded to see if that was true later when you have met all the civs? Also, barbs had early Quadriremes even before GS, but nobody remembers that kind of ancient history. BTW, an amusing fact I found while looking through the files: Barb camps also technically have a city name, even though they don't have anything that would show it, and it's just a placeholder because every city must have a name (yes, a camp, or a tribe as they are called in the code, is technically a type of city). Every single one of them is called Grokville.

Using pins to plan out districts is probably the most important thing to elevate your game. Before I knew about pins I kinda just threw down districts with whatever was best at the time and thought the main bonuses were from buildings, but you miss out on a lot of yields this way. Now when I play like Germany I'll have three cities next to each other with +10 industrial zones each because I preplanned a megacolassal string of aqueducts, dams, and commercial hubs, its insane
@boesthius

I will say that a high adjacency quality district can more than make up for quantity of districts. Sure, late game you want as many of x district to let you win with gpp generation, but those exist mainly for great people points and buildings. High base yields are much better because of lack of commitment, late game multipliers, and simply being able to get yields from your districts that you know your opponents aren’t getting over you. Policy cards you have to learn. Obviously not all cards and where they are. I don’t think any player in Deity knows where every card is and what they do without looking them up and I’m sure there are cards I’ve never plugged in at this point. Learn the cards you’ll need and when in the game you get them. Feudalism is arguably just as if not more important than early empire and political philosophy simply for the serfdom card, giving all builders made while the card is plugged in +2 charges, essentially making your builders 66% more effective, and stacking that with Liang or the pyramids makes your builders 100% more effective. The last thing I want to note is mechanics that make cards and other choices stronger. It’s important to get those extra build charges from serfdom because not only do you get more from each of your builders, but because each time you make a builder the next one costs more by getting the same results with half the builders will make all future builders much more relatively cheap than they could be otherwise. Learn about how each mechanic in the game can help you, like district discount, maximizing envoys through focusing on city states you want the suzerainty bonus from as well as getting a spread of envoys in others for the passive empire wide effects, stacking cards/effects with similar bonuses (wistlebanken + Democracy, craftsmen + coal power plant, etc.) All these little things really add up and even on Deity make you a force to be reckoned with... my next comment will tell you how to not spawn next to Saladin or Cyrus

By the way, for those who do not yet use the keyboard when playing, or are only using it for basic things, you can use keyboard buttons which are already mapped by the game to switch between different lens. That and many more commands are incredibly useful if you want to save few seconds per turn instead of doing everything with the mouse. It really adds up and makes things go faster.

Great video! Appreciate the edit from "broken" to "useful" for districting lol. The one thing I struggle with when it comes to Governors is when to swap them between cities (for non-loyalty reasons). The five-turns without them often feel prohibitive, but that's probably not the case. So for example with Magnus, is it worth moving him for five turns to get better chops on a wonder you want, or to start the chops immediately? (Obviously the maximum strategy is moving him before you unlock the wonder haha.) Oh and one specific question about chopping: Do you know what the formula/increase is for the yields? I know it scales by era and I believe how many techs you've researched?

Definitely didn't know about locking in the district tiles and I'll be sure to try and give that a go. Already knew that I needed to be better at picking out my districts but it's kind of hard to manipulate for me sometimes based on starting location and potential settling options. The being more focused on my win condition was definitely one that I struggle with as I'm still learning to learn those and I seem to always win with a Science victory around turn 350 on Prince/Emperor. Seems like those are pretty easy to just win with at those levels. It wasn't until I tried playing other victories or on Deity that it felt like the AI really tried to put a stop to my plans.

Ignore this if you want, is my personal opinion in governors Magnus not only helps with chop, but helps with setters, and i usually use the capital or a high food city only to make them. Is the first one i always pick Pingala is great, but only if you have great bonus in you districts. Usually i dont have good initial bonus in the capital tho Victor is just for war purposes, makes conquering city easier to control and not make them fall in rebelion Amani is just for the best free city you find, or for other problems that need a governor. Liang is really useful with constructors, but can help with production and even food with her abilities. usually my second pick Moksha is the one i use the least. Only if im playing for a religious victory and i have a really high faith bonus in my district. But it helps a lot when doin it I use Reyna for countries outside my continent or that i have near other big cities, is too useful for money.

Awesome video, i did want to point out some other benefit of using the lenses, inparticular the settlers lense, if you are scouting very early on and you want to maximize your movement, seeing a tile that is light green will indicate that its a coastal tile which could determine where you want to move your scouting unit. Also you can see loyalty pressure through another lense that sort of acts the same way as seeing the tile be red because its within 3 tiles of another city, but it works at a better distance and can tell you which direction another civ is located. Theres a million small things in this game but every tip helps which is why i always watch these videos. :p

I have a question. Do the numbers in % add up or Is it multiplication? When I have two +15% Production toward Ancient and Classical wonders, how much production power will a city with 100 production power have? If I own the pantheon "Monument to the Gods" and the policy card "Corvée" at the same time, is the calculation 100x(1.15+1.15) for 130 or 100x1.15x1.15 for 132.25?

Down south those BE-UT-I-FUL mountains give you a +5 and +3 campus/holy site. Lovely yields in starting city, plenty of 2/2 tiles, plenty of upgradeable stone, sheep, a luxury etc.. i have a question: how does settling on bonus, strategic, and luxury tiles work? does it just destroy the features AND the bonus or just the feature? do u get the accumulation of strategic resources like horses and iron? what about amenity from luxury resources?
@boesthius
@boesthius Жыл бұрын
so you're on the right track! the only thing that gets "destroyed" is the feature itself - settling on top of bonus resources the resources is still "there" underneath your city, same with luxury resources. so if we settled on top of Deer, for example, the resource would be "there" still and you could even build Temple of Artemis next to your city because of it. the same with luxury resources - you get that resource itself as well as the amenity~ a lot of the times i dont settle bonus resources because they usually spawn on features that give extra yields - for example settling on top of a 2/3 deer tile would just turn it into a 2/2 tile with deer on it because the Woods feature was giving it extra production. it's the same thing for Strategic resources, you accumulate them as if you improved em

boesthius is using extended policy cards and detailed map tacks. if you want to use mods, then go to the steam workshop page for a mod (ending in id=number) and copy and paste that into steamworkshop.download , click download, then unzip the folder (which will be a bunch of numbers), then check the folder hasnt got a folder of the same name inside it (in which case use that instead) and then drag that folder into your civ 6 DLC folder, which will be located in discname/program files/epic games/sidmierscivilizationVI/DLC
