@the_tactician9858
@the_tactician9858 Жыл бұрын
@@pdegan2814 It makes sense tho. Rome was pretty great because of many different reasons. They had a strong military, a large population due to clever food management, a very stable economy (until it wasn't stable anymore) and some of the best engineering seen to man until the Scientific Revolution came around. And while culturally they basically nicked everything Greek, they did enhance that culture by building amazing monuments and having a bunch of talented writers. A lot of civs surpass Rome in one point but overall, it's hard to find as complete a package as Rome. Add to that the significance Rome has on history (everyone knows the Roman Empire even if they hardly know anything else) and it seems a solid first pick for someone looking for 'a strong civilization'.

I think 90% of players choose civs that appeal to them historically. So either their home country or the classics like Rome, USA, Germany. Whereby the lack of Alexander the Great and Perikles player maybe refute my argument

'Fun' fact: the Civ VI tutorial scenario is, to this day, STILL BUGGED. It involves something with giving commands to your Scout, and it causes the win condition for the tutorial mission to not trigger, meaning that you will be stuck for... One... More... Turn...

Another great thing about Rome as a beginner Civ is that it also has some powerful utility when you start trying to transition to using ore advanced tactics. Chopping forests is very powerful in the early game. Being able to chop with Legions is quite powerful, and you're already going to make Legions anyway, right?

Rome is still a main of mine, even so far after 6s initial release. It wasn’t until Ethiopia was released that my boy Trajan was bumped into second place. I just find them so flexible that I could basically do whatever and just have a chill game. Love my boys in purple.

I found this very helpful. The past couple of games now with Trajan I've been learning how to district better, and how to get a good momentum going with eureka bonus's and expansion. Rome helps you I think to learn how to play because they don't have any ridiculous district bonuses or out of the ordinary abilities. It's just a free monument, better aqueducts and better swordmen. In my last couple of games I've done a Legion rush which I never do an early war because I was afraid that I would just lose outright to the ai. But since I've learned how to better manage my cities I was able to keep up with the ai and I learned that the computer really sucks at warfare. Early warfare is also a lot easier than late stage, and if you're going to do warfare then do it asap. I'm in a game now where I took a civ out in the classical age with my Legion so I had a lot more cities to work with to kick Hurammbais ass.

I'm a new player to civ and start playing civ 6 about a month ago (same time as one of my friends). Two other friends play civ 6 as well, and one of them recommended to me Trajan, but he also recommended Pericles. I agree that Trajan is quite good, but I think Pericles is also quite useful for beginners. It's not like you have to go for a specific victory with him, although I guess he is mostly culture, and he is quite simple and not too complicated or nuanced I feel.

I don't think it's so simple as "you should always build a monument first". Personally I always build a monument before a granary unless my city has low housing (usually 3 or sometimes 4), then I go granary first, but that's usually because I tend to settle cities away from fresh water more freely once I'm already fairly established and don't need the culture or loyalty boosts as much, and if loyalty is a problem for a new city I just stick in a filler governor until it can generate enough to not get loyalty flipped.

That one less settler the AI gets between Immortal and Deity really does make all the difference in the world. If you're doing good on Immortal, and having issues on Deity, I'd say play Immortal until it feels too easy or you're no longer having fun. The main difference is just working on your early game. Once you get that down, Deity will be a lot easier.

My first game (mp 2v2 with three buddies, two with 20-30 hours, one with 100ish, all played Civ 5). I'd played a ton of 2 and 3, some 4, and no 5. Good at strategy, but noob to modern Civ: Me: Which civ should I play? Them: Do you want to play dom, science, culture or religion? Me: Science I guess? Them: Def Korea. Great at science. Me: Plays Korea, reads about Seon placement, kind of gets it, but is terrified of putting another district next to it so spends money buying out tiles and goes all in on science, goes bankrupt, stays bankrupt. TL/DR: Definitely Rome. The only downside is with every other Civ building the monuments is painful.

I would say, however, that it isn't THAT intuitive how the trader system works. Took me a long time to figure out how to get more trade route capacity, because i never used gold; why use gold when you can use production to build units. Additionally, It's not immediately clear when a trade rout goes through one of your own trading posts, although that doesn't matter with the "bigger number is better" mindset. Lastly, I thought for the longest time that traders were absolutely useless. Why? because I thought the given value (let's say, +6 gold) was the amount i got when the trader was done with his trip! 6 turns to get 6 gold is absolutely useless, which is why I never used traders. Just some counterarguments to your reasoning of "intuitive"

Yeah that is very fair!!! A lot of things like that aren't incredibly intuitive, and i think it shows how a lot of the depth and complexity of the game isn't super explained - even in the more "new player friendly" aspects of the game like this.

Yeah only 30% have beat the game but that doesn't mean 70% didn't manage, it could be more like 20% didn't manage and 50% were like oh wow looks like I'm on track to win this game, if I play out the next 50-100 turns, anyway that's boring I'll start a new one.

I've never finished a game and likely never will; I'm not a fan of anything past the renaissance and keep starting over. Early game is fun, mid game is so much micromanagement, I don't even want to know what late game looks like.

@@slwrabbits yeah especially since the meta is to go wide in this game. I just pretend I'm playing endless space or humankind and cap myself at 5 or 6 cities. If you've got 30 cities and it's modern day... bless you

Basically everything you highlight here are why I consider Rome one of the ABSOLUTE WORST civs for a new player. They're wildly unfocused. Their abilities are good but don't clearly bias them towards a particular victory, which means a new player is being left to flounder across the breadth of the game rather than having a clear gameplan. Their free stuff is strong but the fact that it's free means a new player isn't even going to understand that they're getting it. If they roll a new game (whether because they win, lose, or get bored) they're going to wonder why all their civics take so freaking long and what these Monument things are. Oh well, I didn't build them in my Rome game so they probably aren't important. Same deal for roads and trades. The best civs for learning are Scotland and Genghis Mongolia IMO. Scotland has exactly one ability, Earn All The Science By Learning How To Take Care Of Your Cities, and everybody understands that Genghis makes horses go brrrrrrr. A new player needs a Cool Thing To Do much more than they need Good Numbers, and Rome only provides the latter.
