I just got back in about 5 months ago after a 10 year hiatus and felt a little overwhelmed myself. Theres really no reason to be intimidated. Not only is it not that difficult but there is just so much more info out there than there used to be. Best thing to do is just go for it once you’ve refreshed on the basics. The rest will come back to you. The advice I wish I had was really spend time thinking about what fish you want to keep, make a list, then decide the appropriate order to add them. Another thing is right now the fish selection at many fish stores isn’t great since the whole quarantine thing. So just be patient.

Same here. Don't worry things are soo much easier now. I would suggest watching Aquarium Co-op's video on Quarantining fish & the three meds to use. Start there. The best advice I've heard since studying up is: "You can make this hobby as complicated or easy as you want, as expensive or cheap as you want." Jump in, it's a really exciting time with all the break-throughs in the hobby and tons of new strains of fish.

Knocked it outta the park with another great informative video matey...agree X7. Not many videos talk about pH and keeping it stable, i.e., not chasing a value, which is very important as it stresses fish out and causes problems. 👍

Love these videos, just stocked my first ever tank today off the back of your videos. Aquascaped and planted it and now I’ve added: neon tetras, corys, one Pleco, cherry shrimp and nerite snails. Loving watching them get to know their new home! Keep up the good work!

First video I’ve watched of yours and it’s great. Making another tank for my fish and having some problems with the floating live plants. I will definitely have to get more substrate but in the mean time thinking about what I can do to keep the plants down. Love the vid!

Good advice. My tip is to buy a tank that fits the type and number of fish you intend to keep or by the fish according to your tank size. I myself have had fish from 1967 in the States and for the past 40 years here in Israel. I have an L81 gold nugget pleco for 24 years so far and Australian rainbows for years. I've found things are simpler than many people in forums imagine. I tend to run more than one filter. Undergravel filters were considered the best for at least two decades. Everything you say about deep substrates was said about them. I personally have found no observable advantages in the use of any commercial chemical additives including dechlors. I have also found that there is no reason not to rinse sponges under the tap all at one time. Where I live, we've chlorine but no chloromine. I do bimonthly water changes. I don't have plants as I seldom have long term success with them.

Hi Justin, hope you well.. I'm jason from South Africa . I've just bought some easy to grow plants. My question is they came in there pots,, little plastic ones with the cottonwool like stuff wrapped around the roots.. Is it advisable to let them stay in there pots for a day or two before planting or whatever the plan is or is it better to immediately remove the pots and do your thing?, thanks

Hi, great tips! but what interest me the most is tip no.5 I have a 30x30x30 tank for shrimps and I'm carpeting it with moss, looks beautiful to me but I have only one problem which is cyanobacteria. I clean it manually every week, it took me around 2 to 3 hours of cleaning for every week meaning that for 2 to 3 hours I turn of my filter which is a hang on filter. I change my water around 30 to 40% every week with 6 hours of lighting daily. I got no problem with all the shrimps, they live quite well in it. Based on your tip no.5 should I stop cleaning it every week and let the beneficial bacteria do the work to clean the cyanobacteria by itself without turning off the filter? but I will still take it out as much as I could manually. I need your suggestion for this, since this is a shrimp tank, I won't use any chemical to get rid of the cyanobacteria. I hope you would help me with this. Thank you!

I’ve found that by not cleaning at all is the best method in my area. I don’t even own a vacuum for my aquariums. I let the fish take care of it and the plants do the rest. I use hang on filters but I put activated charcoal as a filter. Ammonia and everything is at 0. I’ve debated heavily on buying a vac but after buying a test kit today and seeing where everything is. It’s exactly as it should be. The only tank that’s got an issue out of my 6 tanks is my shrimp tank. I treat it the same but as I’ve cut back on feeding since there’s so many snails all of a sudden I caused a massive spike when the snails died under the moss covering the whole bottom of the tank. The past week I’ve had 3 shrimp die and my ammonia is at 8.0 poor shrimp. I’m currently moving them all into my established tank that’s twice the size since they’ve been having babies like crazy. Hope my poor shrimp make it through this shit. I feel so awful not having this kit and not paying attention. Everything’s gone perfectly since I started fish keeping like 6 months ago

Hey! Great video! I have a 15l aquarium with 6 pink danio rerio, 5 tanichthys and 1 ampularia... but is very hard to keep the ph and the aquarium stable. The ph keeps lowering to 6.2. Do you think that this happens because i have too much fish? My aquarium is planted, i have 3 different kind of plants

I've only had tanks since late 2019, and I think this whole time I've been over cleaning my substrate. Until a month ago, I was taking plants and driftwood out and deep cleaning the substrate. Now I'm just doing the top and leaving everything in there. I keep thinking when I add water back I shouldn't see stuff floating around. I squeeze the filters once a month, if that.

I just recently am ripping my hair out because I made the decision to try to cut my tap water because it had literally a KH and GH of 0 so I thought it was a good idea to try to cut the water with a little bit of harder water just to try to create a little more stability only to do the opposite and cause major pH fluctuations now I'm facing plant melt and plants not taking in nutrients like they were truly a hard battle.

What plants would you put in 8.4 ph and a high dh and gh? I don't like cichlids. I have live Platys and Corydorus. I used to keep angelfish before I moved here, but, with these water parameters I had to rehome my angelfish. Without plants don't you need to vacuum substrate? My tanks are clear as crystal. Your tanks look like you've forgot them. Consider UV, just don't run it with certain medications if you have to use them like if you have to treat the whole tank for something. I've had planted tanks in the past, still you have to vac gravel. I don't know exactly where you are going with this argument. I'm not trolling you; I really don't get you on this.
