I was definitely taught to use the handbrake once stopped for my UK driving test, as well as always looking over shoulder rather than relying entirely on mirrors. As an aside, I've taken three driving tests in my life and passed each one first time: California car test in 1970, UK car test in 1977, and UK motorcycle test in 1980.
@backtotheroots70485 жыл бұрын
Okay: 7. You should always see a part of your car in the mirror, adjusting your mirror to a point where you don't see your car at all seeks other dangers. 6. This differs from person to person. 5. Never do what is shown in the video. You do that only if someone has high-beams on and is blinding you. Your mirror should always be in the normal position. Someone could have not so bright lights or headlights positioned too far down and if your mirror is in the '' night position '' you will be not able to see them. That's why car makers are fitting more cars with self-dimming mirrors. 4. If I personally invented the parking brake I would never call it the emergency brake, never pull on it while driving. Except you want to slide your car purposely or in the life or death emergency. 3. This etiquette is actually very cool but no one uses it. 2. If you're bound to run out, you will run out, be very gentle on your pedals, try to coast as much as possible, break with the engine rather than the brakes. 1. This is mostly good advice, except for fwd, never do what is shown, your car could gain much more traction and spin you into the other lane or in a ditch. Just let your throttle down and shift it into a higher gear, the momentum will do the rest.
@joostverkade38145 жыл бұрын

@Fabian van Lenthe I am sure if you know your electric car for at least a month you know range and if not have nissan (they take nearly double to charge from wall plug vs tesla) you can probably get like 8-10 miles from 10-15 minutes charge if find someone that let's you use their power, I seen a courier ask for 10 minutes charging from his last drop as just needed range to get to dock as charger other side, he had to drive 85 miles without heating on at night to make it though I do look at getting a nissan env200 for a courier job in future but wish could get body then put tesla motors and battery on it for faster charging and better range, also in time get model 3 performance though hope before the speed assist is made law here

If it’s going to rust, it’s going to rust using something doesn’t prevent rust. But you should always use your emergency break to relieve the strain from the transmission when parked. Another thing you shouldn’t use the emergency brake while driving unless it is an emergency.
@sean95175 жыл бұрын
A parking brakes primary function is parking. It should be used whenever a vehicle is parked. It's secondary function is as a emergency measure in case of brake failure. Calling it a 'emergency' brake is common, but completely miss represents it's intended function. Proper use of the parking brake can extend the life of an automatic transmission.
@veteranheavyequipmechanic49905 жыл бұрын
A lot of newer cars don't have the "emergency brake" set up in a way that they would or could do much to stop a vehicle. A lot now are set up with separate parking brake shoes that run on the inside of the rear rotor hat and usually just use a spring clip to hold them to the backing plate. The 1999 Silverados were the first vehicles I remember being like that, and if you tried applying braking force through them they just rip the the shoes off the backing plate. Now if you have rear drum brakes or if the parking brake is set up through the rear caliper then no problem.
@brandoncaldwell955 жыл бұрын
Dont really need to worry about then"emergency brake" in an automatic. Parking paul does the job. Only time you really need to set it is when youre loading a trailer or somthing that could snapnthat lottle pin with great force. it isdesigned to handlenthe cars weight on a hill. Manuals are not setup that way though. You need too setnthe brake on them and put itnin reverse when facing down a hill and 2nd when facing up a hill with the wheels turned acordingly..
@sean95175 жыл бұрын
@@brandoncaldwell95 Not using the parking brake can prematurely wear out the prawl! So yeah, the parking brake should always be used regardless of transmission type (even automatics). As I already said. :-)
@brandoncaldwell955 жыл бұрын
@@sean9517 No it cant bud. I have 165,000 miles on a 15 year old truck not once using the parking brake but to load a trailer. Zero issues at all. I know of many many people who have 300,000 or more miles on vehicles that have never used the parking brake without issue. The parking paul does exactly what it was designed to do without issue. Many of those people load trailers with heavy tractors not using the emergency brake without any damage being done to it. Takes more force than youre thing to snap that little pin.
@veteranheavyequipmechanic49905 жыл бұрын
@@brandoncaldwell95 the parking pawl isn't really designed to take the kind of force applied by being on a steep grade, so if you drop the car onto it to hard it could break or bind, which could actually break it if you can apply enough force to even get it out of park, I'm speaking from experience on that one. As long as you chose to correct gear in a manual, 1st or reverse there really should be little concern of it rolling away even on a grade, however I bought a car a while back, it was a timing belt car and they parked the car facing downhill and left it in reverse, at some point the force of the crank pushing in the opposite direction compressed the belt tensioner and let the crank spin free while the car rolled down the hill.
@davekirk1005 жыл бұрын
No 4. In the UK its called the handbrake, almost always used when the car is stationary for more than a few seconds. It's not used for 'emergencies' but in regular circumstances like when you park on a hill or stuck in traffic where you may be stopped for some time. It's also used in addition to the footbrake if theres a chance of you getting rerar-ended, it will more likely keep your car from hitting the one in front

When teaching driving in the UK we advocate seeing a small portion of the car in the side mirrors, in order that reversing is done safely, and sideways glances/leaning forward to clear the blind spots when overtaking or moving round an obstruction in the road As for your referring to the Parking brake for use in emergencies, this procedure would be dangerous as in most cars the hand brake only operates the rear wheels, which could induce an inadvertent slide.

my favorite driving tip is to be aware of the blind spot created by the "A pillar" of the car because it creates a lot of obstruction while driving in a windy section of a road or while turning a car in a tight spot
@stigmsr15 жыл бұрын
Rather than telling people to turn into the drift, you should tell them to look as far down the road as they can and steer towards where they want to go. If they do that they'll still actually be turning into the drift but they'll be less likely to overcorrect the first drift resulting in the car snapping back the other way.

Indicating. If you do not have enough time to indicate correctly, you are about to make a rushed & unsafe decision. In other words, an example: If driving along a road and I say (suddenly you realize) turn here now, DON'T do it. go up the road and come back. Before we change lanes or turn we need to have had enough time to indicate and check next to us and then be able to turn (change lanes). In fact this looking around us should be a constant thing. We should always be aware of whats happening around us. Also when driving, keep an eye on the road as far ahead as the eye can see. If you see say a vehicle parked or some other obstruction don't wait until you arrive at it to see it and then have to make a rushed decision to change lanes.

On #2, you should NEVER drive with less than 1/4 tank of gas. The fuel pump, a very expressive replacement part, is located in the gas tank in most vehicles nowadays. The pump is an electric pump which creates heat while it's running. The heat is dissipated through the gas in the tank. Overheating of the pump causes premature failure of the pump. Being located in the pump requires (with a few exceptions) the tank to be drained and dropped out from under the vehicle to access it. Many of the newer vehicles have plastic covers under the vehicle to eliminate the turbulence of air and increase mileage, and is more stuff that has to be removed and replaced which increases the cost of labor in replacing the fuel pump. The last time I had one replaced, over 3 yrs ago, it was on a truck, so it was very easy to drop the tank and that cost me $700 ($350 in labor and $350 for the part). It's NEVER cheap to replace a fuel pump but keeping a few dollars worth of fuel in your tank is a cheap precaution. You can run it a little low for a short time with little damage, but try keeping it at 1/4 tank

That's not an "emergency brake." It's a parking brake! It was dresigned when cars had manual transmissions, so the car doesn't start rolling when parked. Cars with automatic transmissions have a built-in parking brake, but cars with front-wheel drive don't lock the rear wheels, so the car could still slip on ice/snow or wet pavement, so using the parking brake locks all 4 wheels. BTDT! You can stiil use the parking brake in an emergency (like a brake system failure) so that's how it got that name.

The last one doesn’t make complete sense. Whether you add more throttle input or less depends on front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, or all wheel drive, not whether your car is automatic or manual.
@brandoncaldwell955 жыл бұрын
Simple rule of thumb is just takeyour foot off the gas and turn away from which way your sliding by how much your sliding. Basically like making a turn. You already lost traction, so any input throttle or brake will cause more damage. Just let the cars wheel roll till they regain traction. For manuals, just put the clutch in. Auto, takeyou foot off the throttle.
@lmallanao5 жыл бұрын
Brandon Caldwell what does pushing the clutch in do when you’re already in a slide? You still need to correct with steering and (sometimes) throttle
@brandoncaldwell955 жыл бұрын
@@lmallanao In a manual, your wheels always spin, push the clutch in to simply remove power. You already lost traction, you want to regain not keep it lost. Take the power away till the wheels hook then ease back into it so you dont spin again. Autos dont have that issue as youre simply dealing with fluid flow through the torque converter. Just ease off the throttle and the fuild stops the preassure allowing a free spin. Throttle isthe last thing you want in a spin/slide.

After watching a few of your videos, I think you should change your name from BRIGHT SIDE to CAPTAIN OBVIOUS. How about some driving tips that AREN'T commonly known instead of this 'driving 101" stuff.

1. Blind spots: adjust mirror as noted, but more importantly, stay out of other people's blind spots. Never change lanes without looking - ever. Don't change lanes until you KNOW that the lane is empty. Best practice is to find a empty spot in front of you and pull into it (That is, don't try to "back into a spot" behind you.) 2. Music is entertainment. You're driving a car and that should be entertainment enough. If it's not, stay home and listen to your music. You and everyone else will be happier. Music appreciation will not be on the test. 3. Adjust rear view mirror for night: can't believe they included this. When's the last time you heard of a night time driving test? 4. "Emergency" brake (what fool came up with this one?). Automobiles have "Parking Brakes" not emergency brakes, used when "parking" on hills/inclines. I've used it hundreds of times for this exact purpose. I've NEVER used it "in an emergency", whatever that is. If it's on the test, they're going to ask you to park on a hill, not make an emergency stop. 5. Car horn should remain silent. "If you've got time to honk, you've got time to avoid me". By the time you decide to honk, find the horn and honk, I hear it, realize it's for me and what you're honking about, and then react, the situation is long since over and done. So why should I worry about your honking? Honk away, it makes no diff to me. Honking during the test will not improve your score. 6. Almost empty gas tank. Don't worry about this. One day you'll run out of gas and the experience will be so unpleasant that you'll never let it happen again. Fill your tank the night before and it won't be on the test. 7. Regain control. The real problem here is that you lost control in the first place. That was because you were driving too fast for circumstances. As with #6, this'll only happen once and it will be so unpleasant you'll never let it happen again. Using the correct speed for circumstances will be on the test, regaining control won't be.
