I would argue that David Beckham belongs on this list. Manchester United got rid of a player they no longer wanted while simultaneously making room for Cristiano Ronaldo to blossom at Old Trafford. Real Madrid got a player that more than payed his transfer fee in shirt sales alone and contributed fantastically on the pitch. Beckham was able to grow his profile and his brand into another country which directly led to his move to the USA and the base of his success to this day.

This is a fair call. The only downside from the Beckham deal was real madrid were dumb enough to play becks in central midfield because they already had Figo to play on the right wing. The best part of the Beckham to madrid transfer is that it meant newly elected Barca president Joan Laporta signed Ronaldinho instead because Beckham took issue with Laporta promising to sign him without consulting him first. Beckham was too full of himself at the time to realize that just how it works with club presidential elections in Spain and that they all promise to sign any number of players to get elected and once they do get in they have to figure out a way to make it happen. I’m not complaining though because R10 was a much better signing for Barca than Beckham could have ever been, in a sporting sense

If you ever reboot this idea for a part 2 consider Fatawu to Leicester from Sporting: Sporting turned a hefty fee for a 19 year old paving the way for Quenda to come up & thrive. His former club in Ghana 2nd division also got a commission that was one of the biggest transfer fee in Ghana. Leicester got the Mahrez replacement. He was a star in the EFL and now got EPL football

Fikayo Tomori to AC Milan honorable mention surely. AC Milan after signing him on loan finished second in Serie A, are now on track to win Serie A, and Tomori is a permanent starter in Pioli’s Squad Chelsea offloaded someone who wouldn’t get playing time under Tuchel, ended up winning the champions league and club World Cup, as well as the UEFA super cup I’d also argue Tammy Abraham to Roma because he’s playing like a Serie A seasoned veteran and scored the most goals in anyones roma debut season

Olivier Giroud from Arsenal to Chelsea worked out well for all parties allowed Arsenal sign Aubameyang, Chelsea got a useful striker and Giroud got the game time he was looking for
@JohnHolywell2 жыл бұрын
As a Chelsea fan not at all! Giroud didn't get any way near the game play he wanted! Hence him leaving for AC Milan and Aubameyang ended up ruining Arsenal financially becoming their highest paid player and had been a shadow of his former self since then for them before revitalising his career at Barca. You're right it was a good deal for Chelsea having a useful backup but not for Arsenal, Giroud and Aubamayang.

Hey Alfie, I just thought of a cracking idea for a video you could do on the turbulent recent history of Goztepe in the Super Lig. They’re one of the Super Lig’s most well supported clubs (a bit like a Newcastle United, Sunderland or Strasbourg if you may). In the 2001/02 season, they finished seventh in the top flight, however from 2002 to 2008, they were relegated five times in six seasons, due to their inability to reduce their outstanding debt which resulted in the football club being banned from signing new players during that time. In August of 2007, a business based in Istanbul, vowed to take them back to the top flight making them one of the top five clubs in the country, but they were met with lots of suspicions from the fan base, and then they handed over the ownership to another bloke called Mehmet Sepil in 2014. Anyway, they’re back in the Super Lig as a solid mid table/weaker top half team. Why am I bringing all this up? Because apparently Abramovich is looking to possibly buy the club himself, after being sanctioned from the UK. It’s a crazy crazy story and may you could look into this, not to mention, they are not only a rare example of a club that is considered a neighbourhood club, as well as the fact that they’ve played in 3 different stadiums since 2011, but also in 1969, they became the first Turkish football team to play a semi-final of a European competition.
