Hi!! I live in Japan, and when I first arrived i struggled with the train too. I did what you did, by relying on the platform number. I don't recommend this!! Some very large stations that have JR and subway lines may have multiple numbered platforms that are the same! It is SUPER important to check the name of the line. They all have a specific colours that will help you find it!! Also, even if you go to the right number platform, NOT ALL TRAINS WILL HAVE THE SAME DESTINATION!! You really need to be careful of this, because sometimes the train on the same platform will have different destinations and diverge before you get to your stop. So if you miss your train, don't just take the next train that comes, check if it goes to your stop!

I disagree with keeping your wallet/passport zipped in your jacket. That's still an easy target for pickpockets in a crowded area like a subway. In nanoseconds, they can jostle you, unzip the jacket, and take your valuables. Use a money belt or a daypack for your money and your passport.

@TheWanderingWife5 жыл бұрын
Great tips. I especially like the one about eating light before a flight. You don’t see that one in many other tips videos, and it’s so true! We love Japan (my husband has been there 33 times!) but the jet lag is real for us. We’re on the east coast, so the time difference is 12 hours! 😴 PS, if you haven’t been to Osaka, try to go. We like it much more than Tokyo. As a frequent traveler myself, I have a few tips to add. 1. As tempting as it is to have a drink on a long flight, don’t do it. It seriously dehydrates you, and dehydration contributes to jet lag. 2.) when you have to include connections, try to go through larger airports, as they have more options for other flights if you miss your connection or a flight is cancelled. 3.) flying early morning usually means fewer delays as late connecting flights haven’t had time to mess up the schedules yet. Also, if you miss your connection, it gives you more options for other flights than if you arrive late afternoon or evening, as many airlines won’t have more flights out until the next day. 4.) leave AT LEAST 2 hours between connections, especially if your connection is overseas. Three hours is better. It might seem like a waste of time, but it gives you a cushion for a late arrival, time needed to go through passport control/immigrations, getting lost trying to find your new gate (some airports are huge and require you to take trains to other terminals), or just using the bathroom or finding something to eat. Trust me, it’s better to have plenty of time to get to your next gate than having to run through an airport. 5.) look up ScotteVest products. They’re made for travel and have TONS of secret, inside pockets so you can leave your purse at home and feel very secure.

Well, it is too late now. But for your next longhaul flight take some water spray with you for the dry air in the plane. Either small Evian or Avent spray or just some spray bottle you fill with water yourself. Or put a wet cotton handkerchief over your nose or try special cream in your nostrils. Whatever works for you. Never forget earplugs, chapstick and some cream or lotion for hands and face. Earphones with noise canceling are wonderful, too. In times of corona virus, bring some hand sanitizer as well.
