Great video guys. I didn't really get how Blockchain would make the grid more efficient. Electric grids already have centrally managed power dispatch operations and market based pricing. The power producers are regulated to keep the grid stable. I guess I am missing how superimposing a blockchain type ledger on this infrastructure will make much difference.

BC is changing the world as we speak, there will be those who make the most of it, and those who struggle to catch up.
@cadusteig87947 жыл бұрын
The idea is awesome but something that bothers me a lot is how we would get a corrupt government (like in Brazil) to start using BC for more transparency? Right now it sound too good to be true. I just can´t see politicians voluteer engaging in it. Any ideas of how it could work?

Politicians do what people make them
@rmt35892 жыл бұрын
Pressure from the people. If people want BC using politicians, and some politicians start individually using it, it can grow in popularity. There are other ways, but that's the universal standard in my eyes.

how to implement blockchain?
@JanClaesTube2 жыл бұрын
Blockchains have one big advantage: It is practically impossible to change data. While this is groundbreaking and indeed facilitates tracking, it comes at a (too?) high cost. Even without proof-of-work as a trust mechanism, the essential property of a blockchain is that many copies exist of the data. No matter how you look at this, the data redundancy is wasteful and does not belong in a climate-concerned, sustainability-oriented world. For sure there are other ways to improve tracking and tracing to achieve the seven discussed ways to lower climate change?!
@TheRastamau52 жыл бұрын
Hey Jan, could you kindly expand on what you mean by "data redundancy"?
@JanClaesTube2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRastamau5 The abundance of copies of the whole blockchain is considered “redundant”. It means “unnecessary”. In any other system, the data is stored in one or a few places, with potentially some backups, and perhaps synced to a few devices. Let’s say (way) less than 100 copies. In blockchains all data is stored in typically thousands and thousands of copies. This is unnecessary or redundant…
@TheRastamau52 жыл бұрын
@@JanClaesTube couldn't you argue the aspect of redundancy can also be viewed as distribution. Depending on what frame you apply when looking at the technology. I thought the fact a blockchain has all the copies of the ledger on every node, copies that can only be appended not amended adds value by removing the need for trust. Therefore, is it not necessary to keep copies on every node?
@JanClaesTube2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRastamau5 That is not how it works, I believe. First of all, instead of trusting a single authority, in a blockchain you need a trust system to decide which nodes to trust. In fact, this makes a blockchain less secure in some sense: it is hard to change data, but it may be a bit easier to read data, since it is broadcasted to all nodes. It takes only one undersecured node to break in (no single point of security). Second, it is essential that all nodes have a full copy of the ledger in the current implementations of the technology (to avoid unintentional forking). The abundance of copies have some practical advantages, but in terms of sustainability and resource usage, they make blockchains the worst option in use today. In a context of resource scarcity, this is quite crucial in my opinion.

This is naïve for a lot of reasons: first it is putting the impetus on the consumer to make “ethical” choices about consumption. This is a massive problem with climate change rhetoric that stems from the “carbon footprint” narrative which was a campaign created by BP (of all companies) in the mid 2000’s. Certifying boards like fairtrade have been far more sympathetic to the businesses they serve than the end consumer. Fairtrade certified is just further obfuscating problems around labor conditions and giving consumers a guilt free experience. Asking consumers to directly invest in renewables? Again, neoliberalism at its dumbest. We’re going to be on the hook either way through subsidies, tax credits or highly taxed fossil fuel based sources. Stopping the video now. This is not the tech that will help create sustainability, ethical capitalism or net zero. It’s just the next step in an existing system of obfuscating real problems and asking individuals to change the world when they frankly cannot (without influencing political change and demanding corporate accountability).

Hey Steffen, climate change is the natural occurrence of the earth going ice age to very little ice at-all. The Grand Canyon walls show we have been through three ice ages, and that's just what they show. Sounds like all you do is repeat what ever you are told. You have obviously never read a book.
