Iii Don't know mate. The description barely even makes sense for what it is. Would make more sense to say 'certainty' not 'uncertainty' tbh. The whole idea is to assume that no one person is trustworthy. Not the other way around. Also has nothing to do with blockchain. Just some cryptos network. Becomes very confusing when words are thrown around half heartedly for marketing. I know this comment is old and all, mainly just sending this for those who come across it like myself.

Don't worry, it's just PhD students, academics and hobbyists. The academics are selfishly motivated 'must publish papers' but harmless. Companies going for financial gain become middle men services, at the start some exploited it, but right now all that remains are struggling startups on the verge of failing. The more popular a blockchain, the more it grows, and they become freaking huge, so that's the first problem to deal with.

"potential abuses of the blockchain by governments and financial institutions too" That's just it though--it can't really be abused--or at least, the effort/investment to do so would be greater than the payoff and therefore it _wouldn't_ be abused. When everything is decentralized it means that there is no single point of failure to subvert. Though, I guess this depends a little bit on what you mean by "abuses." I normally avoid TED talks, but I love blockchain technology so I gave this video a go. I wasn't disappointed. Like the points about how our societies got more complex and world trade grew. Right now we are at a stage where the world is a very small place. Movement is easier for people and ideas. Institutions can try (or just sabre rattle) to regulate and stop blockchain developments. I fear they are scared and not sure of what blockchain can achieve. If there is more regulation, sure privacy coins will become more widely adopted and demanded. DeepOnion in particular believes in decentralisation and total anonymity for transactions. Additionally Lightening technology will be a game changer in this industry.

it would have been nice if she addressed the fact that the storage required to house a blockchain grows with each transaction and the implications of instituting that sort of thing for a national or god forbid a global currency
@plasticman20118 жыл бұрын
it is possible to handle these issues with pruning the blockchain to make it take up less space as well as second layer technologies such as the bitcoin lightening network.
@oppressatron77988 жыл бұрын
plasticman2011 under our current binary language medium ,replacing (for example) the US dollar with a bitcoin-like model would cause storage requirements to balloon to hilarious levels, even the mighty google data centers would have trouble housing it unless they shut down some of their other services and concentrated on storing the "master" block chain. This doesn't even address the individual requirement of miners and consumers to permanently house and transmit a portion of the master block. We would have to expand the language of digital storage (and thus storage capacity) in order to effectively house it in a secure and redundant manner Hexadecimal might do the job, but it has to be a native switch and not some sort of compression from binary, IE we need to transition from binary bits to hex bits or alphanumeric bits because you'll always need an uncompressed copy of the blockchain to do work, just my opinion but im a DBA/Storage admin so i know a bit about the low level requirements of something like this
@plasticman20118 жыл бұрын
frank jaeger clearly, you didn't bother to read how the bitcoin lightening network fixes those issues. What it boils down to is this: not every single transaction has to be stored in the bitcoin blockchain, you can use a bitcoin transaction as a means of opening payment channel on a 2nd layer network that handles tens of thousands of transactions without having all that data recorded in the bitcoin blockchain. this means that it is possible to do 10,000x increase in transaction volume without it increasing the size of the blockchain. I urge you to go read the bitcoin lightening network whitepaper.
@oppressatron77988 жыл бұрын
plasticman2011 i have read about it, the lightning network doesnt and cannot address the issue of local storage for those who are responsible for maintaining the integrity of the entire chain, yes its true that individual clients can initiate transactions without too large of an overhead, but that "low overhead" is gauged based on the present bitcoin usage stats, instituting that as a national currency is a completely different thing. Add to this that if you were to use bitcoin as a national currency you would have to base it off of the value of the current currency which would require you to inject historical data about the previous currency into the chain before a single new transaction is made in order to confirm the value of the currency, thats ALOT of data, add redundancy and cross custodian audits and you're into a ridiculous amount of storage

It's a good explanation but namely for that reason i feel dissappointed. : Imagine, now EVERYTHING (!) has to be written/fixed/reflected/formalized to become a part of crypto-block-chain notes; what for? Bettina explains: to decrease 3 sorts of uncertainty appearing during the exchange of goods/services/data; Are those ones the major uncertainties/threats for human lives? NOPE, they all are secondary or even tertiary worries. Is it expensive to keep/copy/calculate/spread the chains for everything? YES, it's like to create a parallel universe. Does it strengthen the current institutions? NO, it doesn't; it has a destructive potential. Does that technology help to develop natural human capabilites like empathy? NO WAY. I can conclude that I have sound reasons to feel myself disappointed...
@adamchan23794 жыл бұрын
You brought up some good points here, also their whole system and mechanism of it sound rather odd and something is definitely missing from it, It only takes away from humanity. They make it sound and logical as it is, but as a matter of fact, these people lost hope in humanity and rather be replaced and be governed with this so-called refashion slavery. Whoever and whatever that established slavery in the first place in history recorded or unrecorded, is beyond this.
@codece172-ak24 жыл бұрын
@@adamchan2379 I like the topic cause it brings us back to some points that are unjustly forgotten by people. The first thing that came to my mind was the complete denial by the orthodox Jewish sect of the "Essenes" of the idea of wealth, trade (the exchange of goods and services for money), the use of slaves and the desire for personal profit. Unfortunately, you will not find the mention of the Essenes in any modern Jewish texts (Bible, etc.), they are completely excluded from the modern Jewish tradition due to a conflict with the high priests at the Second Temple period. Nevertheless, Pliny the Elder, Philo of Alexandria, and Josephus Flavius testify about the Essenes. In the behavior and teachings of Jesus, we can also find some similarities with the concept of the Essenes regarding the exploitation of people and property inequality. Jesus preached humans equality, a communal way of life, when everyone receives what he really needs, and in return gives what he is a master at. Jesus spoke of the days when local communities will form a Universal Community. The second thing that comes to my mind is the teachings of Marx. They may be easier handled / implemented at this moment than the teachings of Jesus, as we are still rather far from the time of the Universal Community. I know that in America you do not study Marx, you confuse the Marxists with the Communists (and use both names in a wrong way). In Europe, Marx is being carefully studied. Marx listed all the functions of money: money is an intermediary in the exchange of goods, a means of accounting for value, a way of dividing & summarizing value, a means of transfering the value and accumulating wealth, and also an independent good. I see the core economic problem in that it is difficult to maintain the right amount of money in the economy, since this quantity must exactly correspond to the value of goods participating in the exchange at a given time. Otherwise, unnecessary volatility in price levels will appear. However, both the intensity of production and the need for goods may vary. The speed of money circulation (which depends on the banks) subjects to changes. In addition, if money is used to accumulate wealth (for example, for investments), its amount in the commodity market is also subject to harmful volatility. The core political problem is the usurped control over "the money printing machine". All this is directly related to cryptocurrencies, which address the core issues only partially. As I understand it, guys who are addicted to the technical issues of the blockchain concept underestimate the importance of economic theory, and in particular, the political economy.

@jeromevuarand37688 жыл бұрын
She forgot to mention you need to have blind trust in the entity that controls 51% of the hashing power.
@plasticman20118 жыл бұрын
incorrect. Anyone can run a full node on their computer (no mining required) - this enables you to verify the validity of every single transaction yourself (no need to trust any miner). also, running a full node will allow you to instantly know if there was someone 51% attacking the network.
@jeromevuarand37688 жыл бұрын
A valid transaction only enters the chain if the 51% controlling majority decides so. Yeah nobody can forge transactions from you, but they can silence you. And when that happens what do you do? You write off your loss and jump to the next blockchain, and the big bad guy can follow you there.
@plasticman20118 жыл бұрын
Jérôme Vuarand what the network does at that point is adopt a new algorithm, which makes all the attackers computers useless. But even right now, obtaining 51% is extremely difficult and costly to do, and there is almost no incentive to attempt it because there is no profit from such an attack.
@NatureHacker8 жыл бұрын
51% happened years ago, it is just now hidden from sight. Once they got close they split into multiple groups that are doubtless conspiring and coordinating and have way over 51%. What they do with that power now is mine zombie wallets.
@plasticman20118 жыл бұрын
actually, there is no evidence of any 51% attack. such an attack would be immediately noticable. also, it doesn't give them the power to "mine zombie wallets".

This is already generating an increase in electricity consumption (5 video cards = electric heater) and internet bandwidth. The computer equipment itself has already suffered a huge price increase.
