We're all used to our bodies being more or less the color they always are. But there are a few different medical reason you may be seeing rainbow in the mirror, from benign to medically concerning. Here's just some of the reasons that you might see yourself turn Technicolor!
Correction:
5:42 We said copper oxide is green, which isn't quite right. Copper oxide is black or brown and can react with CO2 to make copper carbonate, which is green.

When I hit puberty, I started getting purple spots on my chest. For a year, doctors kept monitoring me to try and figure out what was causing my purple spots. After a year, they diagnosed me with purpura. Purpura means purple spots. I looked purpura up and found that the condition causes purples spots but does nothing else. In other words, it took doctors an entire year to determine that my purple spots were purple spots.

Yeah that's not a diagnosis it's a symptom :/ It means you have capillaries that are leaking blood for some reason periodically. It typically happens from blood thinners, blood clotting disorders, and certain foods that are blood thinners like natto eaten in excess. Kind of weird that they just gave up figuring out what it was. Usually if it's nothing obvious that ends up being like food allergy related or something like that but weird.

My mom had the worst reported case of Raynaud's disease ever back in the early 2000's she ended up dying from it. Lost both legs and most of her fingers so it can be pretty horrible.

ive recently gotten a diagnosis for Raynaud’s at 21 (i am male btw) but i’ve had pains since i was 14. i couldn’t feel my fingers for about 5-6 months this winter… it made me fail this year of college because i couldn’t do my calculus homeworks and lost my job because i kept fudging things up. i wasn’t taken seriously by doctors even after the diagnosis, i was just prescribed some exercices and a massage, and got a reference to see a physiotherapist (that i still haven’t seen…) i’m really worried about how bad it’ll get over the years :c

Not a personal experience, but there's a KZbinr who is a martial artist and has Raynaud's. He can't do martial arts or even really make videos during the colder months because even trying to stay warm it affects his hands and feet severely. When he shared his experience, you could see the tips of his fingers were black. So it can definitely be pretty serious even if you don't die from it. It's good that people can recover from it and most who have it don't have serious issues. But even things that are usually minor can have severe versions or can lead to complications.
@katarh
@katarh 7 ай бұрын
@@businesszeus6864 One of the weirdest, easiest things to do is to move someplace warmer if you have a chance. I have Reynauds but its usually not too serious of a problem because I live in Georgia. It might dip below freezing a few days out of the year, but 95% of the time it's warm enough even in winter that a good pair of gloves and thick wool socks keeps it from kicking in as long as I don't spend too much time outside. .... the other thing I've found is a tiny amount of alcohol added to hot tea. Not enough to get tipsy off, just like half an ounce of rum, but enough to trigger the flush reaction. opens those constricted vessels right back up again and keeps my toes nice and toasty!

@@vampyresmiles713 Heh. I think I know who you’re talking about. But yeah I agree they maybe should have mentioned in this video that every once in a while, risk of not having enough oxygen in the extremities for the survival of the cells becomes a real thing. Honestly it kind of sucks when you have a severe case of something and then you hear all about how it’s “usually minor” and “totally managable no worries”. Makes me feel like I’ve done something wrong. 😂

One time in 6th grade the whole table I was sitting at during lunch was held back because one girl laughed while she was drinking milk and made a mess. Then one teacher noticed I looked green and sent me to the nurse’s office. I was sent home for the day and my parents took me to our doctor, who basically just told me to sit outside and get some more vitamin D. I was indignant through the entire ordeal because I was a library assistant and wanted to go to the library and reshelve the books and felt completely fine. It cleared up by the next day, and we never found out a specific cause for the green twelve year old
@samarnadra
@samarnadra 7 ай бұрын
I mean, while doing nothing for finding the cause, sitting outside in the sun would make your skin more pink which would overlay the green and look brown until the problem went away. Also UV can break down some pigments. I choose to believe the doctor learned you could photosynthesize like those leafy sea slugs and couldn't tell anyone to protect you, and just told you to get sun so you could get energy.

I just want to shout out my appreciation for the scientific way this channel describes pigmentation in people without using the antiquated ideation of there being separate races. This simple change to language completely destroys the foundation of racism by expressing the fact that we are all one species and like every other animal our genes can combine in a multitude of ways and depending on which ones are inherited and expressed creates an individuals degree of pigmentation; and by the characteristics of mere probability certain genes including those related to pigmentation can be either more or less frequently inherited by a group based simply on location.

I had Jaundice when I was a new-born and had to be put in an incubator. I have Raynaud's and it causes my hands and feet to feel cold and my fingers can turn white and my toes can turn a bit purple. It mostly happens when I am in colder temperatures, not so much in the summer or I am in a warm location. When it does flare up, I could put my feet in hot water and not really feel much heat from it. I wear gloves when my hands feel cold and that helps. I also have eczema and it flares up in the cold putting cream on my hands and then gloves also helps that while I am keeping my hands warmer. I sometimes wear opaque tights under my trousers when it is colder and that helps keeps my legs and feet warmer. My Raynaud's it is probably related to me having Scleroderma where my skin feels tighter on my hands and can make them a bit tight, stiffer and I get a slight tingling burning sensation when that happens.

Raynaud's is sometimes an early sign of autoimmune diseases, so if someone thinks they might have it, worth talking to a doctor about! After I began taking blood thinners, I started getting Reynaud's. But only if I'm outside. So if it's very cold inside, it won't trigger. But if I'm going for a walk or a bike ride outside, I suspect it gets the blood flow pumping faster than when indoors, which causes it to trigger. It can be VERY painful. Like my fingers are being frozen from the inside out. Numb to touch so I can't feel where my fingers are in gloves or touch and grab things properly, but simultaneously, like I'm pitting frozen cherries barehanded. It only affects my fingers and toes. Dressing warm doesn't help, but one thing that definitely did was buying heated gloves. My fingers tend to start faster than my toes, but with heated gloves, my fingers stay normal and my toes are much slower, or don't freeze up at all. Reynaud's also causes the front half of my finger nails on specific fingers to die if I get it too often, and the back of the nail grows under that, eventually popping the dead nail up like a car hood. It's still partially attached to the skin though.

Btw, the reason so many generations of the Blue Fugates had MetHb despite it being recessive was because they lived in a really isolated area and married each other. Isolated gene pool & inbreeding -> higher occurrence of recessive traits. Medical treatment helped those that were born with MetHb, but they really stopped being blue because more people moved to the area, and the introduction of new genes prevented the recessive gene from being expressed in new generations.

Another fact about bilirubin: as stated, things like hepatitis, liver disease, and the like can lead to the excess of bilirubin. There is also a genetic condition, called Gilbert's Syndrome, which I found out I have back in 2012 when I was 15, that makes it harder for the liver to process the bilirubin, causing jaundice and some other side affects(which are almost all attributed to the excess bilirubin) like the yellowing of eyes and skin, excessive lethargy, and a few other benine symptoms.
@Josh_Freeman
@Josh_Freeman 7 ай бұрын
Have it too, as well as my siblings. They used to reject people who had it from giving blood because it could be mistaken for hepatitis but tests nowadays can tell the difference. One positive side effect is fewer cardiovascular problems. Bilirubin acts as an antioxidant, reduces cholesterol and platelet activity (although that last one can cause issues with bleeding). My last blood test showed my platelet count very low but still in the green. And I've always had low cholesterol.

Ok, when I started this video I didn't expected to be featured here. I have Raynold's. Not only it get purple easily but sometimes it gets black. No, seriously, in winter I I take my clothes off and turn on the shower the fastest possible because sometimes my hands goes from very purple to definitely black in few seconds. SO far no harm but it's scary and worrisome. I was today years old finding out it can be triggered by stress. As someone with many mental conditions only treated recently now I understand why I need my warms gloves less lately. It's not only disconfort, it also hurts. And causes those partes to be pretty cold most of the time.

With color of poop. One morning i has carrots and blueberries for breakfast, and went to the hospital later that day. While at the hospital the doctor asked for a stool sample so i provided one. The doctor was horrified thinking it was black when it was purple, so i had to explain what I ate that day, since black stool can be a sign of medical issues.

Antacids increase beeturia. Which is a fun fact I found out from personal experience. Honestly it doesn’t actually look that much like blood. Beeturia leans more towards pink and even magenta-like hues. Sometimes the combination of the beets and urine will make it more of a peachy orange, but still not quite on the same side of the colour spectrum as blood colours. 👍🏻 Thank you Sci-Show for giving me an excuse to be TMI in the KZbin comments! PS, even after many times of this happening, I still forget about it sometimes and startle myself for just a split second in the bathroom.

YES THANK YOU I've had people constantly ask why my feet are always red/purple (even in summer heat). My fingers also turn bright red sometimes, and they become very white in the cold. I thought it was issues with blood pressure or circulation but I think I can for sure say it's Raynaud's! As described in the video, for me, it basically is just an inconvenience. Sometimes I can't feel my fingers or toes like they're cold or numb, but for me it never lasts more than an hour or so

Sometimes is an illusion too. I have green eyes and when I was to enlist in the military when I was 18 (it is mandatory here), the woman at the counter asked my eye color and it didn't match my ID, she looked at me and said it was really green as I said not brown as the ID said. How it was possible I thought. My mother said my eyes changed color frequently, and so my girlfriend at the time. I never heard about that and took me a time to realize. My iris was mostly green in the outside part and brown on the inside, at very illuminated places my eyes were green and on less illuminated places the pupils opened and the brown part got more prominent.

I wonder if there’s something like Beeturia but in animals, only some of my birds get pink-purple poop when having certain fruits, but not all of them, and some of them are the same species (for context, I have 9 birds) or sometimes it’s just the poop part (bird poop is made up of two sections, urine and faeces) that changes, again, not due to health issues, just some of them get it with fruit like cherries and raspberries!

The final product of bilirubin is called conjugated bilirubin and it's not colorless. It gets deposited into your bowels and is what makes your poop brown. If you have gall bladder stones, the channel from your liver to your bowels could get blocked and you can get conjugated bilirubin buildup in your blood which will also make you yellow. If this happens, your poop will turn light grey.

Not me clicking on this video thinking I would get a better answer as to why I went from having golden blonde hair and blue eyes as a young child to having dirty-blonde/brownish hair and green-blue eyes later on (I /was/ told by a high-school science teacher that it had to do with genetics and hormones, but I kinda wish I got a more in-depth answer)
@samarnadra
@samarnadra 7 ай бұрын
Well, I can tell you that blonde hair darkening with age is normal, and I encounter it more than I encounter people who stayed the same shade of blonde from birth into middle age. Mine went very light strawberry blonde to strawberry blonde to dirty blonde, but it gets lighter in summer and darker in winter (it is a running joke with the MA at my doctor see below). Basically your follicles are adding more melanin to your hair and eyes as you age. Blue eyes have the least melanin (except for like red/pink, purple, etc), then blue-green, then green, then hazel, then brown, then black. Afaik babies are typically born with blue eyes. *Story from above about the running joke with the MA at the doctor about my hair changing color seasonally: in summer I get lighter hair and darker skin, and winter i get lighter skin and darker hair; but in summer she gets slightly darker hair and lighter skin, and in winter she gets slightly lighter hair and darker skin, she's Hispanic with brown-black hair and medium-brown skin, while I am blonde with light skin. She always comments that we "switched" and how strange it is that the sun has opposite effects on us. I also agree it is quite amusing, but I think it comes down to she likely doesn't wear sunscreen in winter (we have mild winters and hot summers) but does in summer, and I wear it year-round as best as I can remember to, but I burn/tan easily so just stepping outside for a moment now and then in summer means my skin will darken compared to winter when the UV index is much lower and I wear long sleeves. Her hair isn't bleached by the sun (and swimming when I can) like mine is so the additional sun protection (likely also in her hair care products) keeps her hair dark. That is just my hypothesis though. It fits what happens when I travel where I can't always bring sunscreen or I forget it and go to a cooler cloudier place and come back with a slight tan and confuse everyone (when I was in college in Washington people were really confused because I would come back lighter than I left because I wore sunscreen and stayed inside during the hottest part of the day all break, but at college I was out and about during the day and while it wasn't very sunny, my skin tans easily enough that I had to start explaining the UV index to random people so they would stop wondering why I did vacation backwards. No, I am not deliberately tanning in Arizona, unless it is spray tan or rub on gradual sunless tanner, because I like not having suspicious moles. Most of the school year I was in long sleeves, so I was still pretty protected from the sun regardless (and I wore sunscreen if I planned to be outside, I just had poor planning). So that is basically it - melanin hijinks.

As for orange skin from too many carrots, it can happen much more easily in people who don't eat grains or potatoes. I lived in a food plan like this for many years due to being addicted to high carbs. It was much easier to turn orange from carrots, winter squash, red and orange peppers, while living on this food plan. No study has been done that I know of; but it made me wonder if it was the lack of high carb food that made this possible. I was among others who also was on the same food plan who noticed this, too.
