Also 8-bit music is really limiting. Gave us some great sound design and musical design. Musically this lead to a lot of simple catchy melodies, cleverly creating percussive elements out of double/triple stops, and that distinct square-wave synth vibe. Gave us beloved gems like the music in Mario, Sonic, Zelda and Pokemon.

Prince of Persia in 1989, due to the memory limitations the game had already reached its memory allocation limit for the Apple IIe and couldn't fit anymore into it. So creator Jordan Mechner used a few lines of an XOR formula to turn the hero character to create the Shadow-Man that makes up most of the games suspense and best mechanic... which is just a clone that echoed you.

The makers recreated the basic idea very differently to dodge that.

Not sure if true or not... but I was once told that video games as a whole were accidentally created because of a glitch involving magnets and an oscilloscope thus inspiring the creator of Pong to actually create the first video game ever. Basically, magnets caused the scope to go haywire and the soon to he father of gaming realized he could control, to a small extent, a dot that would appear on the screen... If true, that would be the ultimate in hardware limitations resulting in breakthroughs in video games. Lol

My favorite example of a creator taking a physical limitation and turning it into a strength (Besides the already mentioned fog from silent hill) is from horror manga author Junji Ito, who uses the fact that you have to turn a page as a way to prep you for the scary image you are about to see. This is probably why his manga didn't adapt as well for the anime they made (Also the animation was straight up bad, but that's another thing entirely).

Funny thing about Resident Evil is the game it is largely imitating - Alone In The Dark - also had to overcome technical limitations, namely being able to render the environment in real time, which they of course overcame by using fixed camera angles. I wonder if they ever learned to render environments properly, since I recall falling through the world in several games (notably, Bethesda games).

Fighting game combos were originally a glitch because one such game accidentally accepted repeated button presses. Players liked this a lot, so dedicated visual and functional combos were created out of it.

It'd be interesting to see the opposing video - games made worse because of technical limitations. For instance Treasure Island Dizzy only had a single life, unlike any other game in the Dizzy series. This was because the devs couldn't figure out a solution to the game becoming impossible if you dropped the snorkel underwater which made Dizzy drown and respawn on the beach with no way to get the snorkel back.

Actually, Mario wasn't designed for SMB. He first appeared in a couple Game & Watch games, and at the time he was just named "Jumpman". Then he starred in Donkey Kong, then in static screen puzzle platformer Mario Bros, and only after all those he finally got into Super Mario Bros. Therefore, his iconic look couldn't possibly have been designed because of NES limitations, since he already looked like that to start with.
