I’m a graphic designer and was making $1,600/mo working full-time 40hrs a week. I decided I can go solo, so now I make $5.1K/month gross working much less (2-4hrs a day) and making much more than my full-time job did. Take your current skills and monetize it 👏🏼💯

My husband went through the plumber apprenticeship program 25 yrs ago. He has owned his business for 21 yrs. My son chose the electrical apprenticeship. Hes on a list, and it moves fast. Apprenticeships here in Oregon, will start you out at 40% of the journeymans wage, with 6 month raises, until you turn out at about 4 yrs. Most employers will pay for their schooling, and will guarantee them a job after they become a journeyman. Excellent program!

You can die for the company, but the company will never die for you. Keep that in mind. They lay you off without any hesitation despite of all kinds of achievements you have done in the past. Like Nicole mentioned, leave for a better paying job but don't burn your bridges. They will hire someone inexperienced to do the same job you are doing and pay them higher but refuses to give you the raise you deserve. Company loyalty does not exist (well hardly), so instead of thinking you are doing the company a favor, think about your (and family's) own well-being first. Good talking points Nicole!

An old Dad joke: double your money by folding it in half. You are spot on with this video. In engineering, to get a raise you had to change jobs. It was stupid but, that is the modern management theory. As a senior and very experienced engineer I disliked changing jobs but it was necessary. In one case I was terminated to get a younger(and cheaper) engineer to replace me. He wasn't even licensed. The place closed within 2 years. A penny saved is a penny and a half earned because of taxes. I need a new truck but the new ones are $60,000, ugly, and unreliable. This summer, I will restore my 1985 Chevy C-10 for about $2000 and 600 to 800 hours of my time. I am retired, have a fixed income, and can not afford the new price. Its been 25 years since I last restored a vehicle so, it should be good for me to do another one. Good Video. Good Luck, Rick

The good thing is, now you've got youtube to help you do any of the work you might not know how to do--or to do it with more professionalism if you do. My son is learning auto mechanics with youtube videos, and his own car.
@richardross7219
@richardross7219 6 ай бұрын
@@cariwaldick4898 I worked on cars starting in 1967. I restored muscle cars and english sports cars into the 1980s. I was working as a civil engineer. The auto work was a sideline. Your son will find that doing it right will save him a lot of money in the long run. He can save money by buying his tools used at swap meets for cars , trucks , and tractors. Many of the older tools are better made than the new tools. I still have my Husky and SK Wayne sockets sets from 50+ years ago. Collect manuals for autos too. If he is thinking of doing auto repairs for a career, he should watch the videos about how badly many dealerships and garages treat their mechanics. Working construction by day and restoring cars for yourself is a good way to get ahead. Good Luck, Rick

1:14 I don't know if the employee & employer dynamic is different in Canada, but in the US during the 90's and early 00's, employees who asked for raises rather than waiting to get a raise got targeted by management for "termination" by getting reduced hours until hours were non-existent, forcing them to quit.... It could been starting as early as the 80's, but I'm too young to know for sure. This created a corporate culture where employees no longer wanted to ask for raises because they didn't want to find another job.

Everybody has different goals. I've _left_ companies because they wanted to promote me to management and weren't going to take no for an answer. Unfortunately I agree that job hopping boosts salary. I didn't intentionally job hop but after I left one company (because of a threatened management promotion) I went to a startup that folded after a year, then I went to another startup that folded in a couple years - then I went back to the original company that in the meantime had been bought by a large corporation. I bumped up my salary by $20K on each move. I left the first company at $30K and came back 3 years later at $90K. No way in the world would I have gotten raises more than 2-3% a year if I'd stayed. That move by itself had more to do with me getting ahead financially than all the hard work and side gigs I've done my whole life.

I've been trying to get out of my shithole dead end job for years, even went back to 'school' and got tech certifications, but nothing's come of that besides side gig stuff (which I love, but it doesn't pa the bills), the ones that fit are family-owned and don't want anyone else or closed dye to COVID (or have a (rightfully) shitty rep (Best Buy's Geek Squad)), and all the other jobs in my town are the same as my current one or worse, and the few that aren't are HGHLY sought after, so no one there wants to leave! Houses are 800-900k MINIMUM, a lot over $1 MIL! Insane! Apartments are ridiculous, too - even a room in someone's HOUSE (without laundry, kitchen, OR parking privileges, at that)! It REALLY sucks! ;A;

I work for a company that gives very similar, good raises annually but at the 5 year mark I asked for more and got a raise of 30% mid-year then still 3% COL. I work for a smallish company. Some of my friends - especially those working in very well known companies or hospitals (USA) make ridiculously low wages and still act like they are "lucky" to have jobs working for their companies. I will never understand that! I'd rather be earning serious money and working for a company few people have heard of, makes no difference to me!

If considering quitting a job to start a business full time, you need to calculate lost pension/rrsp matching contributions, loss of benefits etc to determine the big picture income your business has to produce where applicable. I know not everyone has benefits and the like, but for those that do, it isn't about replacing your hourly range, it's about replacing your total compensation. Being on the hook for all your prescriptions or dental can be sticker shock if you have always had benefits. Not taking into account an annual bonus might throw your budget for a loop, so remember to look at big picture relating to income from a job.

This is a difficult one to do, but will help you out in a lot of ways for your whole life if you can accomplish it: unionize! Union jobs pay more on average and have drastically better benefits, job security, and much more. In the US, it's a federally protected right to organize, so if your boss retaliates then you get to sue, and a lot of employment attorneys only charge you money when/if they win.

Combining #1 and #3: if you’re doing a dreary job in a large organization quite a bit of the time there are opportunities that don’t have anything to do with the dreaded middle management track. Technical positions, small specialty departments, things like that, which sometimes have aptitude tests and sometimes just have a simple interview process. I’m actually taking an aptitude test this week and if I pass I’ll get technical training in house, GET PAID to do it, and unlike every other job skill I’ve learned in my current position I could actually take this knowledge to another company or even strike out on my own someday. Fingers crossed

If I were willing to drive 45 minutes to an hour I could increase my income by 20,000 or more. Is it worth it to change jobs and drive? It seems so obvious but I never really thought about it before. Maybe now I'm older and have to pay bills, I actually care about work and earning more and more money.

Curious if any Canadians watching this channel have tried signing up for american phone plans? Apparently they have good roaming plans that would end up being cheaper than the Canadian providers

1) Ask for a Raise - You could also look for promotion within your company so you can make more 2) Find another job. 3) Learn a new skill 4) Decrease your spending - A penny saved is a penny earned. - You have to make $1.33 to replace that dollar after taxes 5) Investing - Make money while you sleep - Compound Interest is the 8th wonder of the world 6) Start a business - Monetize one of your skills. Doesn't have to be fancy - You only need to know how to one thing really well. 7) Start a side hustle - Similar to starting a business but sounds less formal

@@D.M.S. I mean, you could always just stay doing the same ish and end up exactly where you have always been... 5) Buy VOO DRIP it and leave it alone. Only 1% of money managers outperform the market. VOO is the market so you're guaranteed market performance minus it's small fees

Canadian money looks really similar to Vietnamese money. That plasticy feel and the clear, transparent spots. Also feels like if you accidentally leave it in your jeans and wash them they’ll dissolve.

Unfortunately, I'm a VERY mediocre worker and I'm not about to get better at this age so asking for more money.... I'd just feel too guilty!🤣

I left a company 1 year ago, and now i was paid 10 more per hour. I didn't think i got that much more. I just didn't like the company and the situation at the time. I will keep my best to jump every 2 years.

I only made $1.95/hr. at my first job in '77. A ride attendant at Six Flags St. Louis. Then I heard Globex Corporation was hiring. That put me on the fast track to success! 😂
