My husband went through the plumber apprenticeship program 25 yrs ago. He has owned his business for 21 yrs. My son chose the electrical apprenticeship. Hes on a list, and it moves fast. Apprenticeships here in Oregon, will start you out at 40% of the journeymans wage, with 6 month raises, until you turn out at about 4 yrs. Most employers will pay for their schooling, and will guarantee them a job after they become a journeyman. Excellent program!

You can die for the company, but the company will never die for you. Keep that in mind. They lay you off without any hesitation despite of all kinds of achievements you have done in the past. Like Nicole mentioned, leave for a better paying job but don't burn your bridges. They will hire someone inexperienced to do the same job you are doing and pay them higher but refuses to give you the raise you deserve. Company loyalty does not exist (well hardly), so instead of thinking you are doing the company a favor, think about your (and family's) own well-being first. Good talking points Nicole!

An old Dad joke: double your money by folding it in half. You are spot on with this video. In engineering, to get a raise you had to change jobs. It was stupid but, that is the modern management theory. As a senior and very experienced engineer I disliked changing jobs but it was necessary. In one case I was terminated to get a younger(and cheaper) engineer to replace me. He wasn't even licensed. The place closed within 2 years. A penny saved is a penny and a half earned because of taxes. I need a new truck but the new ones are $60,000, ugly, and unreliable. This summer, I will restore my 1985 Chevy C-10 for about $2000 and 600 to 800 hours of my time. I am retired, have a fixed income, and can not afford the new price. Its been 25 years since I last restored a vehicle so, it should be good for me to do another one. Good Video. Good Luck, Rick

The good thing is, now you've got youtube to help you do any of the work you might not know how to do--or to do it with more professionalism if you do. My son is learning auto mechanics with youtube videos, and his own car.

@@cariwaldick4898 I worked on cars starting in 1967. I restored muscle cars and english sports cars into the 1980s. I was working as a civil engineer. The auto work was a sideline. Your son will find that doing it right will save him a lot of money in the long run. He can save money by buying his tools used at swap meets for cars , trucks , and tractors. Many of the older tools are better made than the new tools. I still have my Husky and SK Wayne sockets sets from 50+ years ago. Collect manuals for autos too. If he is thinking of doing auto repairs for a career, he should watch the videos about how badly many dealerships and garages treat their mechanics. Working construction by day and restoring cars for yourself is a good way to get ahead. Good Luck, Rick

1:14 I don't know if the employee & employer dynamic is different in Canada, but in the US during the 90's and early 00's, employees who asked for raises rather than waiting to get a raise got targeted by management for "termination" by getting reduced hours until hours were non-existent, forcing them to quit.... It could been starting as early as the 80's, but I'm too young to know for sure. This created a corporate culture where employees no longer wanted to ask for raises because they didn't want to find another job.

Everybody has different goals. I've _left_ companies because they wanted to promote me to management and weren't going to take no for an answer. Unfortunately I agree that job hopping boosts salary. I didn't intentionally job hop but after I left one company (because of a threatened management promotion) I went to a startup that folded after a year, then I went to another startup that folded in a couple years - then I went back to the original company that in the meantime had been bought by a large corporation. I bumped up my salary by $20K on each move. I left the first company at $30K and came back 3 years later at $90K. No way in the world would I have gotten raises more than 2-3% a year if I'd stayed. That move by itself had more to do with me getting ahead financially than all the hard work and side gigs I've done my whole life.

If considering quitting a job to start a business full time, you need to calculate lost pension/rrsp matching contributions, loss of benefits etc to determine the big picture income your business has to produce where applicable. I know not everyone has benefits and the like, but for those that do, it isn't about replacing your hourly range, it's about replacing your total compensation. Being on the hook for all your prescriptions or dental can be sticker shock if you have always had benefits. Not taking into account an annual bonus might throw your budget for a loop, so remember to look at big picture relating to income from a job.

This is a difficult one to do, but will help you out in a lot of ways for your whole life if you can accomplish it: unionize! Union jobs pay more on average and have drastically better benefits, job security, and much more. In the US, it's a federally protected right to organize, so if your boss retaliates then you get to sue, and a lot of employment attorneys only charge you money when/if they win.

Combining #1 and #3: if you’re doing a dreary job in a large organization quite a bit of the time there are opportunities that don’t have anything to do with the dreaded middle management track. Technical positions, small specialty departments, things like that, which sometimes have aptitude tests and sometimes just have a simple interview process. I’m actually taking an aptitude test this week and if I pass I’ll get technical training in house, GET PAID to do it, and unlike every other job skill I’ve learned in my current position I could actually take this knowledge to another company or even strike out on my own someday.
