in-group slavery was practiced in many cultures historically, I don't know why you think otherwise

For the diet portion, I have my anthro dragon race for my TTRPG need precious metals to keep their scales tough and able to protect them. They are confused at other cultures who buy things with metal coins, and even more confused at rich folk who hoard money. Armor and weapons made of metal are more understandable to them, but it's still like covering yourself in food to keep safe. Other non playable races like the Nymphs, plant Nymphs specifically, will need water and sunlight to live and their babies are grown in good soil and are rooted to the ground until toddlerhood.

I don't even want my humans to be human. They're outcasted half-breeds between my pseudo elf race and my dwarf/viking race

Thank you so much for making these videos. I could listen to your voice all day, and the ideas you present are super interesting.

I want to make my dwarves taller than humans. Can I get away with it?

People will be a bit curious why you would use the word "dwarf" to describe them, but go for it.

Bravo! Most people who design fantasy/SF races wouldn't bother considering diet -- they're too hung up on the Way Kewl Powerz (TM).

One of my fantasy races is an amphibian people, with Diplocaulus-like heads and vibrant color patterns on their skin. They're descended from frogs that changed sex in single-sex environments, resulting in them evolving into hermaphrodites over time. As a result, their culture's idea of gender roles depends on which partner in a married couple chooses to lay the eggs and which one will fertilize them. Additionally, their language(which consists of a series of croaks and chirps due to them not having vocal cords) doesn't have words for "mother", "father", "brother" or "sister", they instead merely say "parents" and "siblings".

Unusual diets is a concept I’ve never actually entertained and I’m glad I found this video of yours. It inspires me for my world that I never considered before and it gets me out of my rut. THANK YOU.

Sorry, no mantis people in the current edition of D&D. Thri-kreen are only an official player race in 2e; specifically from the Dark Sun campaign module. I have found a homebrew made to look legit, but it’s homemade and not adventurers league legal

I was speaking about their existence in the game in any capacity; tortles are also an NPC race.

So many great ideas! Mass Effect came to mind for a few of these, they did a good job, especially with the first game of introducing some species that really felt alien. Good to see the Elcor here, love how they communicate with scent and slight movements. Also love the Devin Townsend album in there!

That's not even getting into the more basic physical differences, such as, f.e. are the other races even humanoid? Elephants and Cephalopods are pretty smart, but neither have the physical capabilities of humans. How long do they live? A race that grows up in 2 years, but only lives to be 15-20 years is going to be culturally noticeably different from us, and even more so from a race that takes 30 years to become full adults, but lives for centuries. What about senses? Maybe they're colour-blind, but compensate by having a more complex vocal arrangement than we do?

For realistic settings, I would argue that mindsets can’t get all that alien. Many of our values come from us being fundamentally social creatures (murder and selfishness are bad because the harm the group as a whole, unless they happen to people outside our group), and some amount of social interaction would be required for any sapient species, as for technology to progress, you need one individual teaching another so individuals don’t need to start from scratch.

With the exception of humans dwarves and elves i have actually decided to completely forgo the humanoid look for the rest of the peoples of my project making them completely unrelated animals that just so happen to have the same intelligence and abilities as humans. The only limit i have placed on myself for there design (other than making reasonable biological sense) is that they must have a method of handling objects in a manner similar to our hands

Dark Sun did a WONDERFUL job of this for Dungeons and Dragons. The standard fantasy races felt UTTERLY unique and alien, while still having enough familiarity to rope you in. PS: Enough of the Tumblr weirdos have gotten into D&D that animal races have gotten stale. It's sort of been done to death at this point.
