Early tea cups were prone to cracking when hot liquid was poured in. That's why the tea pot was warmed with a little hot water before adding the full amount. The material for cups and pots has developed and no longer crack due to thermal shock but for the pre-teabag generation the habit often remains and is passed down through the family. We tend to still warm the pot when using loose tea.

And don't forget spaghetti hoops on toast for an exciting variation. Beans on toast became popular in the war and fifties when there was rationing. It's cheap, filling, quick and easy to make and at the time people figured it was reasonably nutritious (it's got beans, bread and tomato in). Kids like it because it's fairly sweet. Students like it for similar reasons, plus for a lot of people it brings back nostalgic memories of their childhood. To any non Brits don't knock it until you've tried it. Lightly toast the bread, add plenty of butter/spread, warm the beans while the bread is toasting. Simple. DON'T forget the butter the most common mistake of foreigners. And eat it with a knife and fork. Only uncivilised philistines use their hands. If you want to spice it up try adding a dash of tangy Worstcester sauce, or some grated cheese.

From a Brit: tea should always be made in a teapot, never directly in the cup. If you only want a single cup then get a small teapot. Trust me when I say that tea from a teapot is much better than made in the mug. Then when pouring, you should add the milk to the cup/mug first before pouring the tea. This way you don't scold the milk but gently heat it as the hot tea is added

Rounds! There is an interesting verbal dance that takes place when someone wants to leave. A person buying the next round will say "my round! Same again?" While the glasses still have a small amount of beer in them. The person who wants to leave will say "No thanks I'm off", the round buyer will say "are you sure" and the leaver will say "Just one more, then I must be off". This exchange is really saying "if you buy the next round I won't reciprocate", and the other is saying "I don't mind I like your company" and/or "I owe you one". If the person leaving is German they will probably be offended if you ask "are you sure?" Because they will take it that you think they do not know their own mind, ie the exchange is cultural, but is an important part of buying and drinking rounds in British society.

Milk first means the tea doesn't brew properly if you're using a teabag. The leaves need the heat but the milk cools it. That's why it's ok to put milk in first if you use a pot, since the leaves are subjected to the boiling water before the tea reaches the cup.
@sneekylinux5 жыл бұрын
Yvette, here is the tea thing for you, the reason some peeps put milk in first goes back to when everybody had bone china tea services, they put the milk in first to stop the cups cracking/breaking but now we all use modern stuff and have no need for that, but if you go for afternoon tea milk would be first...nuff said

I'd just add a couple of things to this. - Trains/the underground/ public transport: Nobody wants to speak on the morning/evening commute because they're tired/stressed out/on their way to a job they hate/worried you're some weirdo or about to try and pickpocket them, etc. Everyone's in their own little bubble and wants to be left alone. Plus people in London and other big cities tend to be more wary of strangers and their intentions. Generally speaking people are more friendly the further north you go in the UK. However if you're on a long journey, e.g. going away for the weekend/on holiday people tend to be happier and excited and generally in a better mood, plus may want to pass the time so may be happy to chat. If not they'll make their replies brief and turn back to their phone/book, in which case take the hint and leave them be. - Queues. If you've been waiting for ten minutes and some arsehole pushes in front of you you're going to be pissed off. Wait your turn. Plus pushing in front of a frail old lady or small child/disbled person is incredibly disrespectful. Why would any decent person even consider such a thing? - Tea. Milk first or last. This is much like scones(pronounced like gone and NOT cone) and whether you put the cream on first or jam. Or whether you like Marmite. These matters are grounds for civil war, arguably even more divisive than Brexit. Well possibly.

Teabag in the cup, then add the milk last. Tea from a pot, add the milk first.
@neowolfsden5 жыл бұрын
When you put the milk in tea, typically milk goes in after the water and the tea at the end and mashed to the desired colour. However, it also depends on when the tea is being drunk. Traditionally tea was made in a pot and milk was only applied to the cup it was served in not the pot it was held in. This allows the tea to remain hotter longer. However, with the advent of the modern tea bag and the fact you can make it in the cup ready to drink when the milk is applied is now largely irrelevant. ;) As for some other things, let's see. 1. Respect your elder, so always indulge them with chat if they want it, ask them if they want help if it looks like they're struggling. Always give up your seat on public transport for them (same goes for pregnant mothers or mothers with children on that one) 2. It is considered polite to hold the door for people when entering or exiting somewhere not allowing it to swing shut in their faces (though some modern feminists take offence to the gesture..go figure). 3. Don't point or stare, considered SUPER rude to do either of those and both are considered very confrontational. 4. Always allow a person to finish speaking before you interject a response or comment, not doing and interrupting someone is considered very rude/ignorant. 5. Always say thank you when being served in a shop or restaurant or the like. Just a common courtesy. Not being told thank is considered rude and is essentially implying you have not done a good job or provided good service. 6. Another big one and unlike many other countries in the world tpping is NOT expected, but it IS appreciated. 10% is the common amount. And even then it is only really expected in restaurants or other establishments where employees are waiting on you and tending to your needs (hotels for example). Tipping taxi drivers is only really done at Christmas. In Pubs and bars you don't tip but it is common to say keep the change or get yourself a drink which always goes to the bar staff and is split amongst them at the end of the night so amounts to the same thing.

The milk in first or last in the UK, has historical and class origins. The upper classes poured the tea in first then the milk, the lower classes poured the milk in first then the tea. For snobs it was a way of judging the person's class when you met them socially. Now it's more what system you've grown up with, although I think if you go somewhere posh you'll find that it's tea first. In Australia from what I can see it's always been tea first, milk last. Tea is one of those awkward things, because everyone has their own way of doing it, but must people won't say to another how they do it for fear of being told they are doing it wrong. Even non tea drinkers will critique how you make a cup of tea. Fact is, unless you are a stickler for a tea pot, pre warming it by pouring hot water into it and then pouring it out and then using loose tea and a tea strainer over a China cup, then everyone is doing it wrong. Me, I'll sometimes put the milk in before taking the bag out, other times I'll take it out afterwards. You do you ((just on't tell anyone)). American beans are different to U.K. beans, so they don't get it. The store person saying hi, thing. They have to. It's a two pronged thing, it's A, I'm here if you need anything and B, I'm letting you know I've seen you so don't try and steal anything. It's annoying for both you and us. Lol.

Rounds kinda make sense when bars are rammed, so only room for one person from the group to get to the bar easily. But rounds also only really work in small groups, and where most of the group members drink at roughly the same rate, and you're all intending to stay a decent amount of time, so that rounds can be reciprocated. Otherwise it can be super expensive, or some will end up paying more than others. Eg in a large group, the last to volunteer a round may never need to buy a drink as the rounds don't reach them before people call it a night. Also, don't ALWAYS be the first to volunteer a round because over time, you'll end up paying for more drinks than others. With works drinks, me & my colleagues usually split into smaller groups of two to four people for rounds for these reasons. Also, I really don't want more than 4 drinks most nights!

That's unbelievable. The very moment you said Beans on toast, I was opening a tin of beans, to make beans on toast. 1 min 50 in the microwave with a sprinkling of chilli flakes and pepper. Perfect. This is the first time I've ever added a comment to anyone's video before. I just had to.

Always stand on the right on escalators!! I see a lot of tourists not taking notice of this even when it’s obvious. The left side is just for people who want to walk up the escalators and are in a rush.

Personally I put the water in before the milk as I think it helps the tea bag brew better, but some people prefer the milk first as they think the water will scald the tea.

I live in the U.S. and don't drink nearly as much tea as I do coffee, but here is the order: Tea + Water, let steep. THEN (and only then) milk. (And you don't look tired, you look fantastic!)

If tea is made in a pot, then milk is put in the cup before the tea is poured.

Milk first when from a pot, milk after if you're using a bag in a cup. Milk stops the tea from brewing properly.

I've heard milk was poured in first when people drank from china tea cups because the believed the hot water would crack the cup; but it is a sin to do so.

Ever smart person intuitively understands that heat is more likely to cause a stronger reaction than something cold and thus poring hot water onto a teabag is undoubtedly the correct procedure, and of course there is the added bonus of tea colour accuracy with the subsequent milk addition.

I’m from Paris but in love with England and London..About the codes, seats/escalators in the Tube or eye contact or saying sorry: just the same here, that must be a big international city thing... ( or European 😂)About the rounds, we do that too, though it’s not institutionalized the way it is in Ldn... Thanks for your videos!

Tea bag -> pour milk in to cover tea bag -> add sugar/sweetener (or not) -> add boiling water. Job’s a good’en!

Tea! It’s a conversation in itself 😂 When I first started drinking tea I was about 12 and liked it really milky, so i used to put it in first (had to make sure I had room, you see) and did that for a very long time... it’s only in the last couple of years I’ve really broke the habit, even though I reduced my milk and know how much room I need..... but I can’t taste the difference 🤷♀️

You’re absolutely right mate, making tea is a sacrament - putting the milk in first is a violation and should be met with swift and severe justice... 🙃

Th ere are scientific papers written on tea making. Including double boiling a kettle imparing favour due to lower oxygen content and tea bags needing at boil water to seep properly etc. yeah bags in cup, hot water, milk is the way to go. milk on bag in cup is a confusion from using, as said before a teapot.
@FMMProductions5 жыл бұрын
You definitely put the milk in after the water. The order of operations is: Mug > Teabag > Boiled Water > Milk > Sugar.... there is no other way to make it. Its the exact same for making a cup of coffee.

You are right, for the reason you gave - the milk goes in last - always. But you are wrong about escalators: you stand on the right, overtake on the left.

If you're using tea bags you should put the water in first so that the tea is allowed to brew. If you put the milk in first or before immediately after putting water in the milk will clog the tea bag holes and the tea won't brew correctly. There's a funny rap but a British comedian 'Doc Brown' and its called 'My Proper Tea' - search it, I guarantee you'll like it!

Making tea in a cup is a new fangled way of doing things. Obviously it's teabag, water, mash it up a bit THEN put milk in. The old way is warm teapot first (hot water, swirl, throw away). Tea bags and hot water. Leave to brew. NOW, you put the milk in the cup first. Simple.

Trains and public transport are a bit different in the North especially with older people, people will often just chat with you about your day, this happens in general, if you're sat on a bench or drinking in a pub too you'll just chat with strangers
