I was 12 years old. Didnt know the english language. My mother translated final fantasy 7 for me when i was playing. She fell for the story and now she has beaten the game 8-10 times. Last time she did she was 54 years old.

I used to record myself beating bosses from Final Fantasy series on VHS tape and let my friends borrow it to watch on their VCR so they could see my strategy. I'd also record my inventory/skills before the battle so they'd know what to bring/equip going into each respective fight. Kinda like a KZbin "Let's play" before KZbin existed..

So old school red/white/yellow AV cables from playstation to VCR 'video in', and then 'video out' cables from the VCR to the TV. I had TV on channel 3 or 4 (whichever) and I'd just hit record on VCR just before my run. Nothing tricky. You only had AV cables and coaxial back then so VCR's and 1st Gen gaming consoles (atari, nintendo, etc) HAD to be hooked up that way. I have probably 2 grocery bags worth of these cables still lying around today. And if you really want your mind blown, I STILL have a working VCR hooked up AV style to THIS day.... ...because I can...even if people consider it obsolete. I don't care! Challenge accepted! Challenge complete!

I used to do the same thing. When I got stuck in a game I would tape it and watch it in slow motion to figure out what I was doing wrong. And I would tape boss fights to show my friends. I just plugged the game console right into the VCR.

We called the Nintendo Helpline while in college constantly to have them explain how to do game glitches (like minus world in Super Mario Brothers) . Needless to say my roommate got a phone bill that was hundreds of dollars worth of calls. This was a time when telephone companies charged by the minute when not calling local on top of the fee Nintendo charge per call.

I had a "Sleep on it" moment that lasted 3 years with the game "Breath of Fire III". It was in Momos tower, where you have to sneak out. I couldn't solve the crystal puzzle, that disables the pitfall trap. Wandering through the tower for 3 years lead to me casually fighting so many random monsters, that i leveled up to level 60... in an area, where you're supposed to be around level 30.

While it is technically the internet, only just barely mind. I remember pouring over these massive text files on Gamefaqs, where users had wrote their own guides on how to beat the game and all the secrets. I can remember using it as far back as Final Fantasy 8.

GameFAQs! Where you had to read walls of text and have the attention span required to remember exactly how you wound up stuck, and figure out where in the guide you would find tips. (Not like the visual aid known as KZbin playthroughs) Was a nightmare for me for platformers and esp. Metroid Fusion. Oh man I remember printing out all the pages of a guide once and my dad got so mad af me. I would've been mad, too.

The memories! I used to print these out and hole punch them. I had all the guides to my favorite RPGs in a binder. I remember even contacting the authors on some of them, the Chrono Trigger guide, I think, because of how grateful I was he helped me land the multiple endings.

I was stuck in FF7 at a mini boss early in the game. I kept trying for a long time till the save disappeared, then I started again and gut stuck at the exact same place. I couldn't defeat him (it was a red flying thing near a theme park). Finally, and by accident, I found a store that sold game magazines and two of them had a booklet attached which were guides to FF7 (in two parts). I immediately bought both magazines just for the attached guide booklets. I read it and I found what I was doing wrong: I never changed my base weapon... I knew I picked up gear on the way, but I thought it would automatically be equipped like all other games. FF7 was my first RPG. I never had to choose weapons before. I upgraded and I went by that mini boss like it was nothing. Lesson learned: RPGs are games in which you have to manually equip the items you gather.

I too, hard restarted FF8 when my older cousin (a girl) explained to me the junctions. I was blown away, so I restarted the game and let me tell you... playing that game over again (I was at the bit where I traveled to the future in the first try) was a joy, as if it was my first time. GG

Yeah, but guides in the 80s and 90s were so different from modern guides. Back then they had custom art, jokes, stories, they were a sort of art form for enjoyment, Now they are just facts and kinda boring. Seriously go buy old game guides and magazines, They even often had mini comics that told stories through hints and solutions.

I actually play Xbox and have never owned a PlayStation, but I love your videos; they are so entertaining and relatable to all gamers regardless of the system. Back in the day before the internet we had to just keep playing the game until we passed the difficult parts, but we did also resort to cheat books and hard copy strategy guides, as well as the cheats section of the monthly subscription to Nintendo Power magazine that we had. My brothers and I also invited friends over to see if they could beat it or had a different, more successful method of approach.

I almost did #6 very recently. Was on the last boss of Mana Khemia 2, got him to like 5% health, died. Figured "You know, screw it. PS2 games don't have trophies. Nobody will know." And I wrote it down in my finished games list and moved on. It haunted me for a week, so I eventually came back and did it properly.

John Wick Damn really? Where’d you stop? Not to sound elitist, because I’m really not, but it’s got the easiest way to give your character an edge. That junction system makes it really easy to overpower your characters and I think the only boss that requires you to be a higher level is Ultimecia since her scaling is different than the others

It will remain unfinished forever. I restarted several times but kept getting stuck in the same section. I genuinely have no idea whatsoever on how to progress. Just one thing bothers me though - more than not finishing - is I'm not sure if my copy actually is ff8 or if it is supposed to be ff7, but it might have the wrong cover or something. I don't know. I have definitely done some of the things on this videos list though. The cheat/tip/guide book more than anything.

In Final Fantasy VII there was a point where RED XIII's old man wants you to get a Key located somewhere in the world ( i believe it ended up being under water near Emerald weapon). I searched the world so much for this item that all my characters were level 99( I think this part is also located on the 2nd of three disks) and eventually I actually forgot what I was even looking for. Turns out you can obtain the key before the old man even tells you to, so all I actually needed to do was speak to him again. Instead, I took his advice and went looking, I looked for this item for at least a year thinking that I was never going to find what I was looking for. Needless to say that the rest of the game was a breeze once I figured out that I already had the key. I know I should of looked in my Key Items the whole time, but I obviously didn't.

I had almost the same experience. Except the underwater tunnel where the key is located looks very similar to another which leads to Lurcrecia's cave. Thought it was the same one so i ignored it every time.. Or just saw the dead end and thought "nothing here" i spent days looking for the key. I finally broke down and bought the guide. Total facepalm moment when I finally found it.. But like you, I had gained sooo many lvls exploring everywhere that I breezed thru the rest like nothin.

Back in 2000, I was playing Legend of Legaia and I was at the part where you fight Songi for the last time. I got defeated so many times. Approximately 30 times, I think. I couldn't level up Vahn, Gala, and Noah because I have very limited healing items when I went to that location. It was in another place or dimension of some sort and you can't go back unless you defeat Songi so I couldn't buy healing items for HP and MP. Unfortunately it was the only save file I have for that game. Manage to defeat him by pure luck after so many tries. I remember jumping around and shouting with joy. Aahh. Good ol' times.

I remember when i was a kid playing zelda ocarina of time, was a part in fire temple where all u had to do was jump from this metal netting floor to a higher up ledge with a door. I booted up zelda 1 years ago when I first downloaded it on my wii and randomly stumbled into dungeon 6 before I had even found dungeon 1. no one tells you were to go. the map is practically non-existent. and you can just walk into dungeon 6 without any additional items.

Oh, gods! Thank you! First time I played VIII, I got as far as the Adel boss before she stone walled me. Dozens upon dozens of tries, nothing. No-one I knew ever beat her. I spent months trying to think of new ideas... Eventually I just started over from the start, anxious about when I finally got to Adel again and still no better idea about how to beat her, until finally I fight Adel... and beat her my first try. Turns out -- something I did not know at the time -- in VIII enemies level with you. My first save, I was level 75 and she was too strong for me. On my second save, I was only level 35 and beat her no trouble.

Story time: I used to play FFVII on my PC, using the steam version. I had literally reached the final area before the point of no return, getting every last materia and ultimate weapon possible. I do not remember the why, but at some point I left the game for a month or so. I finally get the chance to come back to it, and in the place of my saves and try to load up my latest file. Broken hearted, I try starting up a new game, and find myself greeted by a cloud with all his previous materia, level 99, same stats as before. Somehow, my corrupted game’s data had transferred to my new game, while also giving every character (even Aerith) 99 levels.

when i was a kid, i used to write down the walkthroughts for many games and dropped them at the local videogames shop where you could read them for free. for gamers who usually rented games for the weekend was so helpful. if you never been stuck for hours, on a rpg you only rented for the weekend, you dont know that feeling wich is a mix of frustration,regret and blind rage.

Two words “psycho mantis” No internet back then. Was stuck on him forever and got very frustrated. So was my cousin and he called a tip line... yes there used to be tip lines for video games. 'TYPES OF TROPHIES THAT MADE GETTING THE PLATNIUM MUCH HARDER' 'Hard mode' trophies - Wolfinstien 2 was notorious for its hardest difficulty with no continues. Also, the Uncharted games and Dragon Age: Inquisition had my blood boiling all the way through. 'X number' trophies' - Often requiring an insane amount of kills, collected items, completed quests and can these take anywhere from a few hours to a few sodding days! Looking at you 'Batting 500' from Diablo 3! 'Don't Mess Up' trophies - Beat the level without getting hit, using a certain item ONLY, in under X minutes, with an S Rank, without your parents disowning you. You know, the usual. 'Online Trophies - Just...just stop, please. 'Play X amount of hours' trophies - I got 100% on Saint's Row 4 & Gat out of hell and still had over 10 hours of time to waste EACH before the trophy popped, had to leave the PS4 on all night. 'Complete the Challenges' trophies - This is really bad because usually they never give the player an ACTUAL in-game reward for all the hard work and patience. Just a trophy. But the 2 WORST ones are: 'MISSABLE' trophies - Better look up some guides with possible spoilers or you'll miss these trophies in events you haven't played yet and are usually really late in the game. Grind trophies - Unlike the 'X number' trophy where there is a set goal of say '100 enemies'. This is more like killing as many enemies as possible in the HOPES you get the materials for the trophy. If 100 didn't warrant you enough, then kill 200 or 300 until you succeed.

Online trophies in predominantly single player games are a menace. I will never platinum AC Black Flag because of those 5 online trophies. I am not an online gamer, I try to avoid it as much as possible. Also as a part of missable trophies; Hidden Trophies that you don't get from doing parts of the story. These are rare but they crop up when you don't expect it. Battlefront 2 has the "Kill 5 enemies with 1 barrage" which is a hidden trophy. So unless you look up trophy lists online, you will not get this trophy unless you did it by accident

XD As for the uncharted games , they got easier as the series progressed but it would still take 3 days to beat it. Uncharted 1 on the other hand was a full week...cause that game was harder than getting Dave to platnium 1 game.

God I am giving away my age a bit but eh well. This video was like strolling down memory lane when my video game journey began as a bright eyed little girl sitting in front of a black and white with my shiny new NES. So many hours and sometimes days trying to figure out how to get past that one particularly hard boss in final fantasy. Yea I didn't get color tv right away so worked with what I had. Strategy guides and such. No chance of that. Took a bit of grit , sweat and sometimes tears and sleepless nights to figure out how to get past that digital obstacle blocking your virtual 2D path. Its so much simpler then it was before. Memories right? Cheers all. Love every bit of shows. Keep it up.

We used to call a shop called "OK Video" (in Penticton) and the guy would find the game in question in a magazine and tell you what to do. He was a big gamer and read the mags all the time so he usually remembered which one talked about which games. I beat Destiny of an Emperor for the first time thanks to him. Good times.

I had to Hard restart Th Witcher 3 Blood and wine.. *Spoilers* I just didn't know that Dettlaff was coming for a fight because I avoided the Internet because of fear of spoilers. He said he just wanted to talk! I had no health items whatsoever my sword and armor were damaged and I had no repair kits. Thankfully that was my original save of the game so I started a new game plus played through the entire main story (because why not) and played all of blood and wine again while all the way through thinking about that final boss battle and preparing for it. I read the glossary and learned about vampires, gathered all the ingredients and made the superior vampire oil and just basically destroyed Dettlaff when I finally faced him again. Ahh The Witcher 3. So yes it does happen nowadays too Rob👀.

I got stuck on the theodolite section on Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis and when I asked my mate at school about it he bought in several pages of hand drawn notes to show me how to get past it. What a legend. I did late come across the walkthrough in a small book that also included the walkthrough for the first Monkey Island game and another game.

Oh man so good memories with FFVIII. I was about 8yo at the time and my friend had it on PC. He was on disc 3 and borrowed it to a friend who was on disc 2. Then I started playing it too. Every time I got stuck I had to call them or wait until school and talk about it. In the end I was the first one to get to disc 4 because i was better at English. It was around then when internet became a thing and someone learned you could find game guides online. We learned how to use the junction and get all the missed GF's in the last area of the game. The friend who owned the game was at my place and we kept getting better at the final boss as we improved our junction. I remember we started with Renzokuken doing ~2000 dmg per strike and we were completely mind blown as we got it to 9999. We finally beat it and.. Theres another boss! And another! It took so many tries reconfiguring junction, GF's, magick.. It was so different. Nowdays you just alt+tab and it takes 5 seconds to find out what you're missing.

I got mad respect for the hard restart. Nowadays if it's not a guide you read ahead of time, or look up when there's a tough decision, there's some sort of respec system for your character. Back in the day it was brutal, but it made games like Diablo 2 and other RPGs bway more replayable as well

Quistis Obel FFVIII is the only one FF that can’t be remastered. I read somewhere that Square Soft used a different engine when they developed it. So if they will release it in the future they will develop it from scratch and most likely it will not because for Square FFVII is the greatest game/story they made (look at all the spin-offs). PS - I am also a huge fan of FFVIII because that was my first FF game.

I inadvertently cheesed Ultimicia on the PC version by not leveling up any but about 3(squall, Quistis, Selphie) characters to level 100. Since her fight involves all the Characters in the group (not only your chosen 3) she averaged her level to equal mine so [100+100+100+15+10+12]/8 not sure on those levels all in all but that was the basic setup she was level 31 I think when I scanned her, Griever and her final form barely scrapped the 50's

My sister and I were both playing Twilight Princess at the same time, I nearly at the end, her having trouble with the first temple proper. She eventually asked me for help so I smashed it out for her. Then muscle memory kicked in and I saved right over my own save instead of hers. Haven't picked it up since.

Oh, this video takes me back. I used to get/make those 'phone a friend' calls all the time, guiding someone through a dungeon/getting guided/etc. Even worse, I used to make my friends sit on the phone listening to me read the dialogue sections in my Final Fantasy/other RPG games or rage at monsters as I fought them. Your videos always hit that nice nostalgic part of my heart :) Best pre-internet game discovery: it took my sisters and I FOREVER to 'figure out' the freaking mirror spot in Zelda on the SNES to let you get... somewhere. I think it was to a temple, but it has been a while. In the end we only moved past hours of aimless wandering when we lucked out. Our older cousin dropped by with her boyfriend who, seeing us playing it and subsequently hearing our tale of woe, told us what we needed to do. It was quite possibly the best video game moment of my life. That or beating Final Fantasy VIII, since I didn't know the last boss turned insane when you leveled all the way... and also did not understand junctioning beyond hitting the auto-options. Ouch. As for pre-internet fails, we never did get past the high pizza we couldn't make the jump for in one of the old NES Ninja Turtles games... One day

Sure, business and retail love it, and for us gamers it has helped big time in that we can download games now rather than have to physically get up off our backsides to a shop to buy them; and patches are a thing (I remember playing Frontier Elite 2 back in the day on the Amiga and that was a quality game, but it was insanely buggy and had no chance of getting fixed); but in plenty of other areas, the internet makes us a slave of our technology, and thats far from a good thing.

The "Hard Restart" happened to me with XII when I didn't fully understand how the license and gambit system worked and so I also pulled the "Sleep On It" indefinitely. Rob, I have a video suggestion: 6 times we got jump-scared in games that weren't horror games. I even have games and scenarios to suggest, in the following order. 6. In any FPS game when you walk through a door without noticing the claymore mine/C4/tactical RC and get blown to blazes. 5. The first time you got attacked by a moray eel in Asassin's Creed 4 Black Flag. 4. Every time you fast travel to Mordor in LEGO Lord Of The Rings and get Jumpscared by the eye of Sauron. 3. Every time Peeves jumped out of a locked chest in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets video game. 2. When Herobrine attacks in Minecraft. 1. When you "accidentally" steal something in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and you are about to go on your way when suddenly... "STOP! You violated the law!" you are stopped by a guard.

My older brother was subscribed to a monthly magazine called Game Pro... and it provided walkthroughs for games. This was especially helpful for FFVII and FVIII. We lived by those magazines. It gave locations for miss-able items and stuff. Good times

The exhaustion tactic always worked for me! It's the tactic of redoing eveything you possibly can if you get stuck: If you can't find the way, hug every wall and take leaps of faith from suspicious cliffs! If you can't beat a boss, grind a bunch of levels just to see if they are succeptable to being outleveled. If a puzzle have you stumped, write down every move you have, and how they can be combined, and then just go through every solution you can think off! This was how i solved a lot of the point and click games i played...
