An interesting thing about Fangio. He grew up in a fairly working class family, which is of course unusual for a racer . It is possible he had sympathies for workers movements due to his background however he publicly claimed he had no interest in politics, this was even one of the reasons for targeting him according to the revolutionaries. Several times over the years Fangio returned to Cuba and referred to the Revolutionaries as his "communist friends" and was quoted to say "If what the rebels did was in a good cause, then I, as an Argentine, accept it." The revolutionaries hid him in the homes of wealthy sympathizers while the forces of the Fascist dictator, Batista searched for him in the slums. He was given a radio so he could listen to the race and a tv to watch the news. I know the whole gun point part is a bit over the line, but its clear they intended him no harm and considering the desperation of the Cuban working people at the time, I can't blame them. Overall its a fascinating story where Sport and the Cold War intersects.

Since he had already signed a big money deal with Ferrari anyway it was hardly something that would have kept him up at night so good on him for choosing to walk away rather than hold out and making sure everyone was properly taken care of as a result.
