Apparently there's a bug that actually lets you get infinite backpacks. One of the NPCs that sells one is killable and if you kill him(and avoid getting killed by the guards) he'll respawn with a fresh inventory and a new back pack.

Maybe the backpacks in Kingdoms of Amalur are rare because they're made of canvas. According to Bethesda, canvas is a very rare material!

Backpacks in the game are difficult to get too, requiring you to do boring and tedious challenges tobearn badges, do a few fetch quests, complete multiple choice exams and so on. And if you want to mod the bag there are more challenges that are even more tedious.

Don’t forget about the frying pan in the original Fable. You had to hunt down 5 extremely obscure pieces of a map in places you wouldn’t normally go only to dig up an old piece of cookware. On top of that, if you knew where it was and just dig it up without the map it was basically worthless and didn’t have any of the upgrade slots

A fair amount of the cooked items from Stardew Valley could probably count, seeing as for some of them, the very recipes are being guarded by NPCs who you have to befriend to up to seven hearts before they'll surrender the secrets of how to make things such as Fish Stew or Stuffing, and sometimes recipes that require only two ingredients that aren't too terribly hard to get, still jealously guarded by the townsfolk who have to be bribed into giving you the means to acquire these recipes that eventually allow you to earn the achievement for having cooked every cooked item. Every non-marriage candidate, and even two of the candidates each guard recipes at the 3-heart and 7-heart level, forcing you to find out what it is they like, then acquire it before throwing it at them at most twice a week for however long it takes to get them to give the recipe over already, and the game seems to not like the idea of my character just walking up and saying "I know you have the Rice Pudding recipe, Evelyn. Just give it to me and no one has to die." Bloody humans.

The indie text adventure "Curses!" has a wild one. The entire game, which involves the exploration of a posh English mansion, jaunts to several dreamlike realms, time travel, galaxy-brain adventure game puzzles, moon-logic adventure game puzzles, and mastering the setting's not-very-intuitive magic system, is a sprawling quest to find a tourist map of Paris for the family vacation. (This was in the 90s, before GPS was a thing.) The ridiculous part is that the game's intro informs you the protagonist KNOWS he could just buy a new and probably more accurate map once they get to Paris, but he's too pigheaded to admit to the family that he couldn't handle such a simple task.

As for Animal Crossing, I'm just going to put it here that it took for freaking ever for me to manage to cobble together the 30 iron the Timmy and Tommy needed to open a store, despite it feeling fairly common now. And during that couple of days it felt disappointing to find the objectively rarer item that spawns from the same rocks, gold ore the couple of times I did that while trying.

It came out alongside Skyrim , was unfortunately compared to it. It definitely has the better combat system, but Skyrim advances in all other aspects. Hence it was squeezed out, and subsequently bombed in sales. Which was a shame, since if given proper attention they could've brought up to speed all the other areas that was lacking...

Strange as it is, the items that come to my mind are the knife and fork in Skyrim. There are lots of static versions around the whole map but only a few are actually usable. I want to say the go-to explanation for the bottles in Zelda is that they're rare magic bottles that don't break and can hold anything with no problems. But also, given they're in a sort of medieval era, glass itself is a bit of a rarity, especially well made bottles of any real size.

How about the climbing equipment in Star Wars: Jedi: Fallen Order? [Moderate spoilers below] In order to access the part of Dathomir that actually has anything to do with the storyline, you'll need special climbing equipment to scale a special type of wall. Before you even realise that's what you need however, you need to traverse the cavernous and grizzly shadowlands of Kashyyyk in order for Cal to remember how to double jump, once you've done that, you can access the part of Dathomir that then tells you you'll need climbing equipment. After this, you're thrust into some caves beneath you, at which point you have to spend ages finding your way back to the surface, facing countless enemies, and being a hostile planet, Dathomir throws countless high-level enemies at you, and the caves you must navigate take you around in a circle a couple of times, having to revisit the same underground village twice from different directions, as well as at one point navigating a big arena-like bit where its tricky to figure out where you're even supposed to go, finally, you have to fight a colossal bat monster, at which point you find some climbing equipment on some guy's corpse. Anyone else would have just gone and bought some climbing equipment from a shop on Taris or something, but not Cal Kestis, he takes the stupid route to find equipment he didn't even know was there.

Related, the climbing gear recipes for Conan Exiles that require climbing the highest peak in the game, but if you want the improved version you're also going to want a rare item that you can (fairly rarely) get from chests in the Unnamed City or by killing bosses there (not recommended to try without high tier gear and a good thrall). If you get super lucky it's doable within 30 minutes of spawning in for the first time, but you will literally be running north naked and afraid and climbing can be kind of jank at the best of times and Fingerfang is not a simple climb under ideal circumstances.

What about Ice Cream in Don't Starve? You've gotta go through hell and back just to get the ingredients to make a single soft served serving. Ingredients include: ice thats only available a single season or through a ridiculously expensive machine available only in one specific dlc, milk that needs you to fight a goat that you need to charge with lightning either by yourself or lightning strikes in some seasons, butter that has a 1% drop rate from butterflies so you needed to have an ellaborate butterfly farm to reliably get even just one, and honey from some of the angriest bees in all of gaming

I saw the title and immediately thought of the wooden board from Dragon's Dogma. You would assume something so mundane would be easy to find, but you can only get it by trekking on foot across the map to loot a random boat, or startling a scribe at the right moment. Even the description seems to troll you about the fact that it's such a common item, knowing full well you looked up a guide on how to find it. All so you can upgrade the most basic shield in the game.

It isn't much better in the game to be honest. Sure, you can eat it multiple times, but it gives you very little food and almost no saturation, so you'll need to eat again minutes later. Not to mention that once you place it, you can't pick it back up without a silk touch pickaxe.

Unlike all the other backpack merchants, his location means that if you kill him, he respawns after two or three in-game days with a fresh inventory, including a shiny new backpack. Farm as needed for carry capacity.

Ever tried to get the slime blower in the Ghostbusters video game for Xbox 360 and the remastered for Xbox 1? A good portion of the starter enemies are weakened by slime, which is the third of the four utilities you receive. The annoying thing is that at the start, there is so much dark slime, yet it becomes relatively rare in the late game, with the exception of the black slime portals. They even made a level about the black slime mini-bosses, and that still had less black slime than the introductary level.

One suggestion is the Dragon Egg in Minecraft instead of a cake... You have to get to a stronghold to get to the end to kill the Ender Dragon to get it, and it's completely useless except for using it as the bottom half of a really expensive lamp.

In Elite: Dangerous, there’s always that one elemental material you’re missing samples of that you need to, say, replenish ammunition without having to dock at a station, or buff your ship temporarily. Even on landable planets that explicitly have that element, it can be hard to find. I mostly struggle finding ytterbium, arsenic, and polonium for briefly buffing interstellar jump range, myself.
