I actually have 4 clubs with a 21 degree loft. I have a 7 wood, 4 hybrid, a conventional 3-iron, and a driving iron. Of these, two are in the bag, my 7-wood and my 3-iron. I love the 7 wood for high shots, and long shots to the green. I keep the 3-iron around for situations where I need low shots out from trees. The driving iron hits the ball higher than the 3 iron, and when I hit it well, it goes nearly as far as the 7-wood, but i mishit the ball far, far more often. The hybrid I will never carry. I have never hit even one good shot with it. I think it's because it is so much heavier than my other clubs.

Great comparison, guys! And I do appreciate Thomas seriously ratcheting down his speed for our benefit. I actually carry both a 7-wood and a 4-iron at 21º. The 7-wood gets a ton of use simply because it goes farther and it's stupid easy to hit. But it's also incredibly versatile for a golfer with average speed. I can hit it high and low and cut and draw it - all by making very small adjustments in my set-up. It's a real Swiss Army knife anywhere from 160-200 yards for me. The 4-iron gets used more in Nebraska because the wind is often insane, and the flight is lower and it'll roll out. I also hit it on some longer par-3s, and for those lovely low punch escapes under trees! I don't seem to get along with hybrids well.

Really cool comparison , I play a 25 degree hybrid with a 38.5 in shaft and a 7 wood with a 41.5 in shaft . I can always choke down a bit if I want but that extra length gapped me better swing speed 90 -95 on the two. The 7 wood is harder to hit out of the rough but that hybrid choked down is pretty good.

I love these videos like these because there are clear advantages to each club, but in the end it really is player preference. My swing personal benefits from a hybrid, just a great in-between. I dont really care to hit so high but I still want a nice penetrating ball flight with a bit more forgiveness.

I hit my seven wood out of the rough all the time. Honestly, I don’t even use my four hybrid anymore. It will stop on a dime when it hits the green. The spinach generates insane.

I agrée with the slower swing speeds. There are too many KZbinrs just showing off their unrealistic swing speed, honed on launch monitors. 95% of golfers will never achieve these and the data is irrelevant when testing clubs etc. We need data that fits the majority, not scratch/ pro golfers

I play a 2 hybrid which is actually the Nickent 3d f/w 17° which has the same specs as that Callaway UW that came out last year. Then up to 4 hybrid, then 5 iron. That gaps me quite well.

Great theme for this video 👍😀 Interesting how the landing angle of the 7W and (almost) also the 4H is exactly the same🧐. Of course the delivery is different, and Thomas managed to get a lot more spin into the balls with those two woods, which I believe would be a major contributor to achieving higher flight and steeper landing angle, matching Ian's faster speed flight. Would you say, that a lower (normal 😅) swing speed players could benefit from delivering the clubhead differently if the flight from higher lofted woods are too shallow - and if yes, what would be a way to acheive that?

I have a 17 degree 2 hybrid and 5 iron. To fill that gap I’m thinking of getting the stealth dhy 3 iron at 19 degrees. Is there any way that a hybrid and a driving iron can both fit in a bag as I’d like to have both

my question is a high handicapper is more likely than a lower handicapper to hit the rough. Given that, which club would be better for the lower speed, higher handicapper to get the ball out of the rough?

3i: 410.6g, 4Hy: 373.6g, 7w: 335.1g. It was hard to dial back the speed especially with the 7wood due to it being so much lighter. - Thomas

@@swinglabperformancegolf i think my clubs are messed up. I play 20-25 year old clubs, all 'hand me downs'. my driver is heavier than your 7 wood test. D 336.3 3w 355.9 4w 377.9 2i 418.2 3i 425.8g (some lead tape on 3i) I do use the white standard golf pride tour wrap which is 55.5g. Iron shafts are r300 (cut 120 ish). Seems like weight of head and shaft might have a significant contribution to distance over the past 2 decades... Can u do a video about club weight and progression throughout the bag?

I am looking for a good 5 or 7 wood but not sure which brand to go with i am unable to go try them out I am 59 years old 7 handicap ss of 90-94 mph i am looking for distance / forgiveness / and good value what are your thoughts can you give me your top 3 suggestions i would really appreciate it all opinions welcomed thx cheers from Canada

If you have a place that will let you try and return a club or a simulator you should do that. Ping is my pick for easy to hit and forgiving

The difference in height with the fast 3 iron and the slow 3 iron is not just swing speed!!! Look at the attack angle! That makes a massive difference

3 iron is good for a driving iron with the run out and the wood for a par 3 with the height and spin

Simple answer to your question.. with the iron you're coming down on the ball.. with the 7 wood you're coming from behind. This will certainly affect the spin and height.
