We are in the TXG Fitting Studio with Mac Boucher to compare his TaylorMade Stealth 7 wood to the Stealth Plus Hybrid, and help explain how each club offers distinct playability.
Both clubs have the same 21° of loft but play at different lengths, and have very different Center of Gravity positions. Mac takes us through some of his favourite shots with each club while Ian breaks down the benefits of each model and how they compare for distance, dispersion, spin, and height.

At a 20 Handicap, I finally took stock of what I expect from myself and what I want people to see last year. I've struggled with a bunch of injuries throughout my life and definitely worried too much about what people thought of me and my game suffered. I switched from rocking only a 3 Wood and a 4-PW to a 3, 5, 7 wood in the bag with 6-PW. I trust what's in my bag now and feel more confident. Sure, my golf buds call me the old guy (at 34 y/o) but, first three rounds this year are all in the low mid 80's and I am having so much more fun. Don't be afraid to change it up folks. And if anyone needs to hear it, work on being comfortable with yourself and care less about what others think. Much Love and Good Golfing.

Ian nailed it for me. I swapped my 3h (19*) for a 7w (21*) last year and I wish I had done that earlier. 3h flew too flat for me, I swing around average (96-98 mph with driver) and my 4h (23*) carries 185 yard, my 7w carries 195-200 yards and I have a G425 5w on order which flies 210 yards - perfect gapping and all 3 are just so easy to hit even with my swing!

I absolutely love my Mavrik Max 7-wood. People often say higher lofted woods aren't "workable" but that just isn't true. I can hit this club soft and easy and carry 170yds with a nice high ball flight, or put my normal swing on it and carry it 185yds, or do a lower flighted draw and carry 200yds. It is probably the most versatile club in my bag, and covers a large range of yards. I've also been channeling my inner Boucher and have been hitting big high fades with it.

This is honestly exactly what I'm going through in my bag right now - keep my 3-hybrid that is 19 degrees, that I play open at 18-degrees and has a mid-flight trajectory, or find a 5/7wood that peaks higher and carries my same desired 225 - 230 yards. Honestly, it's the hardest club in the bag to fit.

I've been going through the same issue, my 3 hybrid almost gets the same distance as my 3 wood, except that it misses left quite often, where as my fairway wood misses right, I've been debating on getting the Callaway UW to solve the issue and fit the gap between my 3 wood and 4 iron, only issue is that I'm short on cash now lol
@tylerpalmer8973

The answer is YES, lol. Definitely. I've been playing one for about 20 years. I recently have been practising really hard and have gotten my striking to a pretty consistent level up to my 4-iron. I've been striking the 4-iron well enough that I thought I'd pull my 3-iron out and give it a whirl. I had replaced my 3-iron with the 7W and the 7W is just so easy to hit. Well, even with my more consistent striking, couldn't hit the 3-iron to save my life. It's just a different animal, altogether. The 7W will stay in the bag. Easy to hit and it flies high and long. Mine is an old Nicklaus Air-max. I had bought the 3W, 5W, and 7W many moons ago, and I love them. I know they're not a "premium" club, but they work so well.

We're going back to the Fad of using Fairway Woods again! Fairway woods were really popular with older golfers in every generation! I remember in 2005/7 we used to purchase used clubs from an Old Golfer that had quite alot of Used Clubs. A friend bought a entire set of mashed together Fairway Woods from different eras all the same idea #12w 11w 10w 9w 8w 7w 6w 5w 4w 3w 2w 1w Driver. The 9w was the most unique of them all. It was made from Wood with a type of face insert like a persimmon wood, Nice Brass Rails on the bottom! It was made from the 50s to 70s estimated. This 9w was the beezneez I forget the loft but I'm sure it was maybe a 7/6 iron replacement for me was 150+ club. Super well made for its age! The other Woods worked awesomely as well. Flew super high, easy to hit, good distance, Forgiveness etc. I think we will start to see this again. Soon we'll be back into 4 Woods 9 Woods 2 Woods just like back in the day. Obviously they're easier to hit well as it's a different swing than an iron and they fly much higher than irons. They were marketed as game improvement clubs for older golfers losing distance. I for one would love to see all those Old Odd Lofted Woods again just made with Modern materials. I wish I still had that 9 wood man it was a nice recovery club. Wish I could think of the name. (EDIT) Cobra Baffler 9w.

Fantastic fantastic fantastic explanation of what these 2 clubs represent and how they can supplement your game. I am currently going thru this exact situation now…. I would absolutely strangle someone if they took my 3 hybrid from me-BUT - I recently hit a 7 wood…learned what it is meant to do- and how it benefits my game… and more importantly- I came to terms with leaving my beloved hybrid of 7 years behind was the right thing to do… it really makes sense. Having a much more consistent yardage and response is beneficial to anyone’s game… Don’t get me wrong -there are things a hybrid can do that a 7 wood cannot…but holding greens and eliminating the monster pull hook that occasionally arrives with the hybrid is something any player should consider…. Exceptional video gentleman… Ive been playing the game for about 45 years…your content is spot on!! 🙏🙏 take care out there !!

I have owned a Heaven 7 wood and a King Cobra Oversized 7 wood since they first came out...so I have had 3 of them over the years. My favorite is the Cobra...it's easy to hit from the fairway, the rough & even off of hard pan! I don't really like hybrids...I just prefer fairway woods. I guess it goes back to the 1970's when I used a McGregor Eye-O-Matic Driver, 2 wood and a 4 wood...all were Eye-O-Matic woods. Just fantastic Persimmon woods...and they still look great!

@@mattwilliams3104 I would say yes, but I found what's worked for me is using either D1 or C1 setting and placing the ball either center stance or 1 ball behind center and lining the club up to the ball closer to the heel than having the faces center directly behind the ball if that makes sense. I hit a small-medium cut doing that almost every time. I found the furhter in my stance i moved the ball from center, I either hooked it or topped it becuase that low point gave me an upward angle of attack.

Ian, When I say I couldn’t hit a fairway wood 190-210 yards to save my life, I couldn’t. Callaway, ping, tour edge, I tried so many. Until I found the Tsi2 7 wood with the KuroKage shaft. This club has become my 2nd shot off par 5’s. Recovery shot on a par 4 after a short drive, recovery club that I can hit over trees after slicing a drive into the other fairway to still have a shot at a GIR or move up down position to save par. And first wood I can shape left/right, high, low. This 7 wood has been a game changer. My current set up on the sleeve is D1 and what’s even crazier is I play stiff in all my shafts but this club. I bought it with the R2 flex after being miss informed at a golf Galaxy believing this flex was in between regular and stiff flex, but luckily it’s perfect. I just aim, give it a smooth pappy shot, and let the club work it’s magic.

Did the exact same thing. Took my Callaway 4 hybrid(XR2) out of the bag, more because the shaft didn't match well with my irons, and replaced with a Callaway B21 7 wood. I got the "same" results that Mac showed. The 7 wood with a higher launch, softer landing with a more consistent carry and flight. And I considered my 4 hybrid as my go to club. Yes the B21s are a bit of a game improvement series, but I never hit any wood off the turf as well as these - almost scary good for me. I have the matching 3 and 5 woods, also. And yes, I would say the 7 wood is about 5 yards less carry than the 4 hybrid. FWIW, my index is 8.5.

The 7 metal is called a Heaven Wood for good reason. Higher flight and softer landing than the equivalent hybrid. Smaller head than a 3 or 5 metal but still larger than a Hybrid. Im hitting a Nike Sumo5000 Stiff Diamana S65 + ladies' Callaway Big Bertha 4 & 7 Woods from early 2000's. 7W is pretty easy to hit from fairways around up to 210y depending on the situation. Recently shot 79 (+8) a record for me tks to the 7W!!!!! 4W goes abt 230y, and i use it just from the tees. Easy to find fairways. Just bought Stealth 3W (its Ventus5R shaft) and sending 265 and finding fairways in regulation. I will change my 4W with Stealth 3W. And that's it.

Can’t wait to see the video on the 7 wood and other clubs out of the rough. Would also like to see numbers, etc out of the rough, first cut, deep rough, light rough, etc. I’d love to see a 3w, 5w, 7w, and different head shapes tested. Such as FWYs that measure longer from leading edge to back of the clubhead, Vs more compact ones. Ie smaller overall heads Vs longer overall heads. I’d also love to see driving irons and DHY and GAPR mids out of the rough, along with long irons and hybrids. And see numbers and approaches to getting them out. Could be a pretty good teaching lesson. Lower and higher swing speed would be a good argument to see where you’d need to have swing speed to be able to get a 5i or 4i successfully out of the rough. Ha.

Bought a 3 hybrid last November, partly because I couldn't source a 7 wood with a stiff shaft even to test. Hated the hybrid after just a few shots, instantly put it up for sale and got hold of a G425 7 wood with a stiff shaft. loved it from shot 1. Carries in excess of 200 yards with a nice high flight. Also great out of the semi rough.

I game a Vapor Fly 7w , distance is within 10-15 yards of my 3H but landing angle is much steeper and a lot easier to power out of tall grass.

7.2 index. Put a G410 7w in the bag at the start of 2021. Love it. Got it primarily for a sharp dogleg nemesis hole at my home course. Perfect for carrying the dogleg. Use it allot for approaches on par 5’s and positional short par 4’s. Clearly not the same yardages as Mac!! 😳😆

Just added a Callaway Rogue ST Max 7 wood to my bag. First round tomorrow with it, but was really impressed in the fitting especially compared to other 7 woods since I wanted higher spin going into a green. Really fit in well between my 5 iron and 5 wood.

I've had a TSi2 7 wood in the bag for close on 12 months now for the same reasons discussed in your video. It also happens to be the perfect club to hit into the middle of the corner on some dogleg par 4's at my home course. So easy!

Getting back into golf after some 20 years. I was happy to still have my golfbag with all the clubs. Exept for .... my 7 wood. That disappeared somehow. So the first thing I wanted to do based on my past experience is get a 7 wood to get out of nasty rough situations and hit hight shots to the green. The end result is that I realised that all my clubs (W 1,2,3 Irons 3-9 + PW +SW) are outdated and I am going to replace the lot of them. The clubfitter wanted to sell me a hybrid instead of a 7 wood. But I stood firm and I am going to get my new PXG 0211 driver, keep my old 3 and 5 wood, get a new PXG 7 wood, get PXG 0211 irons 5-9 + PW + GW + SW + LW. That is one club too many. But at the course (woodland) I am going to play they told me to forget about my driver anyway. On other courses I will see what I will do. Leave out the 5W or maybe one of the wedges.

I started out with a Mavrik 7w 21deg but with the shallow face it became a bit one dimensional for me and spun a too much for windy days. Only way to take spin off was moving strike to the toe. However, this made it very prone to create slingy hooks. Replaced it with a SIM 2 TI 5w set to 21 deg. Taller face makes it a good club off the tee and on windy days. Toe strikes are also much more playable. Happy so far.

Adams Idea super S hybrids are the best thing ever, oversized and easily the size of a fairway wood. only the last 2 weeks I've figured out i can do just about anything with these clubs. i can grip right down to the shaft and hit a dead straight shot 165-190 at par 3's or high fades around obstacles, low slinging draws from the left rough (yes i live there😂) i actually had them up for sale but I'll be keeping them for a long time to come after the last 2 rounds.

I am replacing my 3 and 4 hybrids with 5 and 7 woods. Just turned 73 and need to replace the 3 and 4 hybrids with fairway woods. The fairway woods are easier to hit and provide better performance for me. I am rethinking my bag of clubs. I now have 3, 5, & 7 woods. My longest iron is a 6.

I felt the exact way as Mac yesterday when I got fitted at PXG. Went in to fill a 230-240 gap. Tested a 3 hybrid at 19° and a 7 wood at 21°. I felt so much more confident at the look and set up of the 7 wood. A 7 wood would have never crossed my mind but that’s why getting fitted is so important. New driver and 7 wood should be in next week!

I'm only working with 6 through gap wedge in my iron set because I'm just not comfortable looking down at an iron with less loft than that ZX4 6 iron, looks more like a 4 iron in my old set which makes sense to me. Got to go get fitted for the long clubs so I can try to figure out what will work for me.

My top end of the bag is driver, 3, 5, 7 wood and 23* hybrid. Yardages of the fairways and hybrid cross over, depending on what shot I need to hit, so it’s a good fit for me.

Still playing a Steelhead III 7w. 185 stopping vs 4 hybrid which runs in. This video may change how I put my next set together. And the Steelhead is a narrow, deep, face with a keel, unlike the newer Rogue 7w. I like that too.

I bought a second-hand 7 wood (Cleveland Launcher) to see how I got on with one after getting great results from adding a 5 wood to my bag (Callaway XR Speed). I'm 59, and struggle with my long irons and was finding I had too much of a gap between my 6 iron and hybrid. The 7 wood fills the gap and I use both that and the hybrid for different jobs (still hit the hybrid about 20 yards further...)

This test also couldn’t have illustrated more effectively why I carry a 4h in the spring during the windy season and a 7w in summer when things have calmed down. 7w is such a great club overall, but 4h still highly effective for me with a more average swing speed and gives me nice variety when I prefer to carry the 5w.

I have a 2H set at 20* and a Heavenwood at 20*. I find the wood is great off the tee on Par 3s from 150-190, but I tend to dig it out of the fairway or rough. When I hit it clean it just takes off. The 2H is my fairway club on long holes. Every now and then I'll hit one that flies, but usually the miss is a low runner, whereas the HW miss will always toe it off to the right.

Love the content! Can you do a debunking “loft jacking” video for irons? Compare same or similar lofted irons but with different designs. Like a P790 8 iron to a p7mb 7 iron. I think too many people think they could just turn down their lofts and get the same results.

I have a 3 hybrid and I’ve experienced the “flyer” many times. Nominal 235 carry, once in a while, esp on approaches to par 5’s I will get 280 total out of it. Hard to replicate though. I will consider a 7 wood based on the points you made. Very helpful.

A decade ago I played a Callaway 7 wood. It was a magic stick. 90% of shots played with it landed exactly on target. Replaced it to buy a shiny new matching set of something or other (long forgotten). Another bone-headed decision.

Callaway currently has two interesting options. They have the Apex Utility Wood (aka Apex UW) in 17-degree and also the Epic Super Hybrid in a 16-degree 2H (both of which have adjustable sleeves if you want to adjust the loft down). There is also the original Super Hybrid that came out in late 2019. TXG did videos on all of them (and there are lots of other videos and articles reviewing them elsewhere).
