At a 20 Handicap, I finally took stock of what I expect from myself and what I want people to see last year. I've struggled with a bunch of injuries throughout my life and definitely worried too much about what people thought of me and my game suffered. I switched from rocking only a 3 Wood and a 4-PW to a 3, 5, 7 wood in the bag with 6-PW. I trust what's in my bag now and feel more confident. Sure, my golf buds call me the old guy (at 34 y/o) but, first three rounds this year are all in the low mid 80's and I am having so much more fun. Don't be afraid to change it up folks. And if anyone needs to hear it, work on being comfortable with yourself and care less about what others think. Much Love and Good Golfing.

I can hit this club soft and easy and carry 170yds with a nice high ball flight, or put my normal swing on it and carry it 185yds, or do a lower flighted draw and carry 200yds. It is probably the most versatile club in my bag, and covers a large range of yards. I've also been channeling my inner Boucher and have been hitting big high fades with it.

We're going back to the Fad of using Fairway Woods again! Fairway woods were really popular with older golfers in every generation! I remember in 2005/7 we used to purchase used clubs from an Old Golfer that had quite alot of Used Clubs. A friend bought a entire set of mashed together Fairway Woods from different eras all the same idea #12w 11w 10w 9w 8w 7w 6w 5w 4w 3w 2w 1w Driver. The 9w was the most unique of them all. It was made from Wood with a type of face insert like a persimmon wood, Nice Brass Rails on the bottom! It was made from the 50s to 70s estimated. This 9w was the beezneez I forget the loft but I'm sure it was maybe a 7/6 iron replacement for me was 150+ club. Super well made for its age! The other Woods worked awesomely as well. Flew super high, easy to hit, good distance, Forgiveness etc. I think we will start to see this again. Soon we'll be back into 4 Woods 9 Woods 2 Woods just like back in the day. Obviously they're easier to hit well as it's a different swing than an iron and they fly much higher than irons. They were marketed as game improvement clubs for older golfers losing distance. I for one would love to see all those Old Odd Lofted Woods again just made with Modern materials. I wish I still had that 9 wood man it was a nice recovery club. Wish I could think of the name. (EDIT) Cobra Baffler 9w.

This is honestly exactly what I'm going through in my bag right now - keep my 3-hybrid that is 19 degrees, that I play open at 18-degrees and has a mid-flight trajectory, or find a 5/7wood that peaks higher and carries my same desired 225 - 230 yards. Honestly, it's the hardest club in the bag to fit.

The answer is YES, lol. Definitely. I've been playing one for about 20 years. I recently have been practising really hard and have gotten my striking to a pretty consistent level up to my 4-iron. I've been striking the 4-iron well enough that I thought I'd pull my 3-iron out and give it a whirl. I had replaced my 3-iron with the 7W and the 7W is just so easy to hit. Well, even with my more consistent striking, couldn't hit the 3-iron to save my life. It's just a different animal, altogether. The 7W will stay in the bag. Easy to hit and it flies high and long. Mine is an old Nicklaus Air-max. I had bought the 3W, 5W, and 7W many moons ago, and I love them. I know they're not a "premium" club, but they work so well.

Fantastic fantastic fantastic explanation of what these 2 clubs represent and how they can supplement your game. I am currently going thru this exact situation now…. I would absolutely strangle someone if they took my 3 hybrid from me-BUT - I recently hit a 7 wood…learned what it is meant to do- and how it benefits my game… and more importantly- I came to terms with leaving my beloved hybrid of 7 years behind was the right thing to do… it really makes sense. Having a much more consistent yardage and response is beneficial to anyone’s game… Don’t get me wrong -there are things a hybrid can do that a 7 wood cannot…but holding greens and eliminating the monster pull hook that occasionally arrives with the hybrid is something any player should consider…. Ian, When I say I couldn’t hit a fairway wood 190-210 yards to save my life, I couldn’t. Callaway, ping, tour edge, I tried so many. Until I found the Tsi2 7 wood with the KuroKage shaft. This club has become my 2nd shot off par 5’s. Recovery shot on a par 4 after a short drive, recovery club that I can hit over trees after slicing a drive into the other fairway to still have a shot at a GIR or move up down position to save par. And first wood I can shape left/right, high, low. This 7 wood has been a game changer. My current set up on the sleeve is D1 and what’s even crazier is I play stiff in all my shafts but this club. I bought it with the R2 flex after being miss informed at a golf Galaxy believing this flex was in between regular and stiff flex, but luckily it’s perfect. I just aim, give it a smooth pappy shot, and let the club work it’s magic.

Did the exact same thing. Took my Callaway 4 hybrid(XR2) out of the bag, more because the shaft didn't match well with my irons, and replaced with a Callaway B21 7 wood. I got the "same" results that Mac showed. The 7 wood with a higher launch, softer landing with a more consistent carry and flight. And I considered my 4 hybrid as my go to club. Yes the B21s are a bit of a game improvement series, but I never hit any wood off the turf as well as these - almost scary good for me. I have the matching 3 and 5 woods, also. And yes, I would say the 7 wood is about 5 yards less carry than the 4 hybrid. FWIW, my index is 8.5.

Would also like to see numbers, etc out of the rough, first cut, deep rough, light rough, etc. I’d love to see a 3w, 5w, 7w, and different head shapes tested. Such as FWYs that measure longer from leading edge to back of the clubhead, Vs more compact ones. Ie smaller overall heads Vs longer overall heads. I’d also love to see driving irons and DHY and GAPR mids out of the rough, along with long irons and hybrids. And see numbers and approaches to getting them out. Could be a pretty good teaching lesson. Lower and higher swing speed would be a good argument to see where you’d need to have swing speed to be able to get a 5i or 4i successfully out of the rough. Ha.

Great video guys again and something I really need to consider again. I had a Callaway V series 7 wood for a few years and not sure where it’s even at now. Loved the visuals on it showing the difference in flights and your man is awesome at calling and playing the shots, just superb 👏🤙

I 1000% would rather play a wood than a hybrid-o. We just built a similar setup going TSI 4 and 7 wood to account for more options off tee and long par 5s. I think the 5 and 7 Woods got the high handicapper stereotype but that just isn't the case. Love this video and validates my fitting choices 🙌 Thanks lads!!

Ian!! This might be just what I needed. I got fit for some t200/t100s irons. But now I'm left with 1 too many clubs. Would dropping my 3H and 5W for a 7 wood. It sounds like a good idea! Reason for me to come to Cowtown.

Bought a 3 hybrid last November, partly because I couldn't source a 7 wood with a stiff shaft even to test. Hated the hybrid after just a few shots, instantly put it up for sale and got hold of a G425 7 wood with a stiff shaft. loved it from shot 1. Carries in excess of 200 yards with a nice high flight. Also great out of the semi rough.

The 7 wood loft is closer to a 4 hybrid. Do you think the 7 compares better to the 3H because of shaft length?

My top end of the bag is driver, 3, 5, 7 wood and 23* hybrid. Yardages of the fairways and hybrid cross over, depending on what shot I need to hit, so it’s a good fit for me.

Great content Ian and Mac love my 7 wood had it in my bag about 8 years its so versatile and easy to hit 👌

Wanting higher trajectory and more vertical descent with more spin when landing is pretty much a no-brainer for approach shots. Same for being able to get the desired yardage out of a club with a normal effort full swing vs. ‘taking something off’ because lowering the swing speed will affect shaft flex and dynamic loft less predictably. In terms of strategy is it wiser for to try to for the green in two on a par five and wind-up in the bunkers more often than the green, or play more conservatively reaching the green with a short wedge from a good lie increasing the odds of landing the third shot closer to the hole for birdie vs hitting it out of bunker or the rough?

I have a 2H set at 20* and a Heavenwood at 20*. I find the wood is great off the tee on Par 3s from 150-190, but I tend to dig it out of the fairway or rough. When I hit it clean it just takes off. The 2H is my fairway club on long holes. Every now and then I'll hit one that flies, but usually the miss is a low runner, whereas the HW miss will always toe it off to the right.

Still playing a Steelhead III 7w. 185 stopping vs 4 hybrid which runs in. This video may change how I put my next set together. And the Steelhead is a narrow, deep, face with a keel, unlike the newer Rogue 7w. I like that too.

I have a 3 hybrid and I’ve experienced the “flyer” many times. Nominal 235 carry, once in a while, esp on approaches to par 5’s I will get 280 total out of it. Hard to replicate though. I will consider a 7 wood based on the points you made. Very helpful.

I've had a TSi2 7 wood in the bag for close on 12 months now for the same reasons discussed in your video. It also happens to be the perfect club to hit into the middle of the corner on some dogleg par 4's at my home course. So easy!

Ian ,I'm using DV-FW5 -HIBRID 4 and 6- pw irons ; if I try FW7 is this one to replace mid irons 6 and 7 ?

Always loved a solid 5 wood. Why I've never tried a 7 wood is beyond me... That's changing in the near future

I have the Rogue ST Max 7 wood and UW 19*. Both are great to hit from anywhere and gap nicely between 4i and driver.

Another great video from TXG. My one complaint is that you don't seem to address the majority (74%) of golfers who don't break 90. As a senior golfer, I straddle 90 with my rounds; some above some below. How am I supposed to interpolate what I could do with a 7 wood (or any other club) from the gentleman in this video who is hitting a 7 wood well over 200 yards? I think that you could do well to do a series that addresses the '74%'. Keep up the good work!

Sim2 Max 7 wood is the best club in my bag... I love it so much, I just put the Sim2 Max 9 wood in my bag.

I added a Qi10 7 wood to my bag this year replacing my 4 hybrid and I am totally enamoured with my new 7 wood. The ball jumps off the face with a high flight path and carries about 190 yards. 7 wood is easier to hit than a hybrid and the higher flight lands softer.

7.2 index. Put a G410 7w in the bag at the start of 2021. Love it. Got it primarily for a sharp dogleg nemesis hole at my home course. Perfect for carrying the dogleg. Use it allot for approaches on par 5’s and positional short par 4’s. Clearly not the same yardages as Mac!! 😳😆

I wish you would discuss hitting from the rough vs fairway. I have been less likely to hit the hybrid from the long grass substituting my 5 iron and sacrificing distance. Would a 7W work better than a 20 Hybrid.

If I hit my TM M4 7w 220, does that mean my swing speed is around a 100?

Ok how did you get a TM 7w in LH? Not seeing that option here in the US?

I just got a hybrid in my bag. Radspeed. I’m having that problem right now. I’m landing it very well, but I’m starting to see a problem…I can’t hit cuts with it. And out of nowhere it goes from 245-265 too a 275 rocket. Think I might go swap this for the 7 now

Ian, I have Titleist 917 f2 in 3 (15°), 5 (18°);AND a 7 (21°) added a few months later. Each has a Mitsubishi Diamana Blue S 80 gram Shaft, at Standard Length. My Question concerns the replaceable Weights and the Effect of going Lighter or Heavier to the Ball Flight in terms of Trajectory and/or Spin?
