So true. I started shooting with my M6 32 years ago and no one outside of photography circles knew about it. Now even my unbranded MP will draw attention I do feel like a douche at times, like I’m try flex or something. But then it just gives me joy to shoot with it, the tactile experience and from a work flow perspective. I keep trying Sony and Fuji but they just don’t like the experience.

Damn 32 years ago.. That’s so awesome.. I’ll be there one day! :) That’s a great reminder.. The tactility of shooting experience is definitely a huge part of the enjoyment too!

I started on a M6 in 2006 and now have a M3. People come and ask me “oh, is that a M6?” And seem confused when I say it’s a M3. Popularity aside, it’s a wonderful tool and for me it’s the most comfortable camera to shoot with. Don’t let the posers get to you.

Owning and using the M6 non-TTL since 2016. The M6 is also my most used film-based M-camera. The only thing I dislike with the M6 is its rangefinder patch flare which kept me from getting a few situational shots in the past. I also have the M3 which I like better regarding its rangefinder without patch flare and more suitable to use with 50 mm lenses. But since my favorite focal length is 35 mm and shorter, the M6 is the more often used tool for me.

Yes the patch can get tricky to deal with in backlight… The m3 is a beauty :)

Well said. The Leica M8 and M9-P are my daily drivers for travelling, I started with a M5 and later added the M4. All of those bodies and my whole collection of vintage Leitz glass blend perfectly well together and are always a joy to use, just perfect. Together with a Rolleicord Model I Art Deco these make the hasslefree street kit of my life.

So well said. Although I do have a compact Fuji camera as well, nothing makes me feel more inspired than when I pick up my M6 and walk out the door with it. So well made, so basic. The perfect tool ,nothing more and nothing less. It has brought me back to the joy of actually thinking about how I'm going to make a picture and doing it.

Great video, completely agree. One thing though - Josef Koudelka did not shot Gypsies on Leica, but on Exacta with Flektogon 25/4. I believe the same is true for 1968 occupation of Czechia. He started using Leicas much later. And in the past two or so decades there are some other photographers who claim to use Leica, but actually use different cameras for the majority of their work, and the Leica is just a brand cooperation / sponsorship (I know this first hand from 2 Leica ambassadors who rarely use Leica :-))... That's actually one thing that bothers me about Leica brand in a similar way like the fact that is has lately became a status/luxury thing mainly, as you point out in the video.
@jeremy-t
@jeremy-t Жыл бұрын
Thanks for pointing that out! I removed the section on Koudelka from the video. I'll better fact check my videos in the future... I'm clearly not the best Leica Historian 😂Oh wow I never heard of that before.. The closest thing I've heard similar to this was a certain big guitar brand asking a musician to place fake amplifiers on stage when he performed to make it seem like he was playing through them, when actually using his real amps back stage... I guess that carries over to other industries too! Trippy!

Same for Capa in fact, although he did use many and different leicas. The D day pictures and lots of his early work were shot on a Contax II. The last cameras that followed him to his death were Nikon rangfinders.
@luc17375

Just a precisation, Robert Capa used for most of his career Contax Range finder Cameras, also for his famous D Day photographs I think. He used a Leica primarily at the beginning of his career, documenting the Spanish Civil War.

I purposefully didn't buy Leica because of your reasonings, however after your explanation, its not the cameras fault that it has that association, it's just a tool to help us create and from what ive seen a damn good one.

I really love my M6, but my MP 0.85 is actually the better camera. By the way, the Robert Capa pictures of June 6th 1944 were not taken with a Leica, but a Contax-II with a Carl Zeiss Jena Sonnar 50mm lens. Also a rangefinder, but quite different from the Leica's of the days. The Contax used to be the more sophisticated camera, the Leica was sometimes called the poor-mans' Contax... Such a shame this brand has disappeared.

If I remember correctly, there were even show-offs and douche bags in The Flintstones. It’s great that Leica creates and instantly sells hugely expensive limited edition sets and that there are always waiting lists for new or higher-end bodies and lenses. There would not be a Leitz Park in Wetzlar if the company was financially unsuccessful. I’m glad they are still around and doing seemingly crazy things like introducing a new-old film camera in digital times.

90 rolls per month?! How do you manage 3 rolls per day and of what exactly? Even when I'm travelling and in a super exciting area, I hardly shoot 3 rolls per travel day.
@jeremy-t
@jeremy-t Жыл бұрын
Yes! It fluctuates, but when out shooting there might be days when I come across something, meet someone, get invited somewhere, and 5 rolls disappear in an hour.. On low months I probably do ~30 rolls. So on average thats about 50-60!

I'm not quite on instagram yet as I've always struggled with that platform, I've always found it too quick (scrolling and swiping) and the viewing size too small..
