Nice review of the 35 Pre-asph, and I appreciate that you highlighted all of the positives as well as the negative (lens hood getting in the way of the aperture) that most(all) other reviews neglect to mention. I have a v1 transition Pre-asph and love the lens on digital.

Nice video. After getting into Leica for one and a half year and have been using 35mm cron v1 and v4, a voigtlander 35mm ultron and a Minolta 40 rokkor, I finally give in to this lens and order one. It might be my last 35mm lens to buy.

Nice overview of one of my favorite Leica lenses. In the early 1970s when I got my first example - and before the ‘art’ or bokeh became popular - I got the Summilux over the newest 35 Summicron because it had the light gathering of an f1.4 and wide that with film made those low light photographs possible (in photo journalism) even if the results were not that ‘good’ sometimes compared to the lens stopped down. But stopped down it was comparable to the Summicron and sharpened up and increased contrast nicely. In the past 20+ years the 35 Summilux pre-ASPH has become a different lens in use for me, much like you mention. I call it my ‘two lenses in one’ lens, because it can have such different renditions depending on the aperture and ‘art’ effect or more well corrected at f4-f8. It can do some amazing things (sometimes unpredictably) that make it such a fun lens to use, full of character when opened up with ‘soft-sharpness’ and a glow in certain conditions. On my Leica SL it is a blast to use, retains all the quirks and with the finder I can get a better idea what the lens is doing.

Thanks for taking the time to write this! That’s amazing to know.. That this lens is still special to you despite so many years going by.. I’ve yet to explore it on the SL.. One day!

Great review, very interesting thoughts! This lens is glued to my M6, I use it mostly for color film though. It's so light and perfect for travel! On digital I don't like it as much, the 35 FLE I think pairs better, although a bit heavy. But that's just personal preference I guess :)

Amazing video, I really appreciate your way of describing the pros and cons. I tried Summicron v4 pre asph on my m4. This lens is called the king of bokeh, but what surprised me about this lens is its classical strong but smooth colors on negativ films comparing to my daily Summicron 35 asph lens. Is it better for me to get the summilux pre a instead if I am looking for something with similar or stronger colors to Summicron v4? Thank you again for your nice video :)
@jeremy-t
@jeremy-t Ай бұрын
Hey! The pre-a produces noticeably less contrasty pictures, with less saturation, compared to the Summicron V4!

Similarly, I loved this lens for more than a decade, for all the reasons you describe, and like you I kept it on my M6 most of the time. I sold it because of the surprise arcs of light that ruined some important images. Frankly, I miss it but no, I would not get one again.

Thanks Jeremy. Is the situation with the filters carried over to the 2022 version? Whilst most others are excited about the new M6, the reissue of the Summilux 35 f1.4 is of greater interest to me. I already own the first M version of Summicron 35mm with goggles for the M3, but need a 35mm for the other M bodies. ♡ Nice video. 👌 Cheers, Kevin.

hey Jeremy, absolutely fantastic video and images. were the pre-asph sample images in this video shot with or without the lens hood? I'm contemplating picking up a voigtlander 35mm 1.4 Nokton classic which is a similar design, but not sure I want to plunk down another $70 for a hood.
@jeremy-t
@jeremy-t Жыл бұрын
The pictures here all had the hood on! Without the hood the flaring would have been even more out of control.. I've used the voigtlander nokton, the flare there is really nice actually, it doesn't wash the picture out as much as the summilux, but without the hood it will flare quite a bit too!

Hello from Singapore! Sure thing! It’s the B+W 49 UV XS pro. With your current filter, you also can try putting it into the hood backwards/reversed, times that does the trick and it allows a thicker filter to fit inside!

Hey Wilfred! I've used it on the m9 and was pretty happy with the results.. I don't have a SL... (Yet?) haha! How it stand up to the resolution of the sl2? Have you been liking it so far?
@wilfredshum3703
@wilfredshum3703 Жыл бұрын
Actually I prefer the Summicron v.4 over this Summilux v.2 at f/2.0. However, it is still a fun lens when looking for special effects at f/1.4.Of course , images from these two older lenses are not clinically sharp compared to those APO lenses, even when mounted on a SL2. There are occasions I found softer images are more pleasing for color photography.
