These commercials aired on CBS on May 16th, 1979
1. "The Muppets Go Hollywood" Commercial Bumper (Brought to you by Kellogg's)
2. Kellogg's Frosted Mini-Wheats
3. Froot Loops (With the voice of Paul Frees and Paul Winchell)
4. Miracle Whip
5. Promo for "The Leif Garret Special" (This was around the height of his popularity as a teen idol)
6. Promo for "The Bad News Bears" (The TV show based on the movie, this lasted for two seasons. Corey Feldman can be seen in a few shots here)
7. Kodak Colorburst 50 Instant Camera
8. Kellogg's Frosted Flakes
9. "The Muppets Go Hollywood" Commercial Bumper (Brought to you by Kellogg's)
10. "The Muppets Go Hollywood" Commercial Bumper
11. Promo for "You Can't Take It With You"
12. Promo for "The Hobbit" (OMG! Unfortunately this is not a promo for the original broadcast from 1977, but it's still neat to see a network promo for this from the 70's. This is by far THE best adaptation of The Hobbit and is one of my favorite cartoons PERIOD)
13. CBS Station ID
14. TV Spot for "Grease" (This had opened nearly a year earlier in June of 1978 but I guess its theatrical run was still going strong)
15. Sunkist
16. WDVM News Bumper (About Three Mile Island, which happened about two months before this: en.wikipedia.o...
Unfortunately the fear-mongering like this that followed caused the U.S. and other countries to disincentivize nuclear power and go back to fossil fuels)
17. "The Muppets Go Hollywood" Commercial Bumper
18. Kellogg's Graham Crackos (Listen George, we just want our milk...not your weird cereal)
19. McDonald's
20. Rice Krispies (With the voices of Daws Butler, Don Messick and Paul Winchell)
21. Kodak Ektra Cameras (With Michael Landon)
22. Raisin Bran
23. CBS Newsbreak
a. Price of beef up (This was most likely directly caused by the 1979 oil crisis following the Iranian Revolution and the increase in cost to deliver fresh meat to grocery stores: en.wikipedia.o...)
b. California Governor Jerry Brown meets with President Carter at White House (Brown would go on to challenge Carter for the nomination)
c. Connecticut Senator Lowell Weicker drops out of 1980 presidential race
d. Louis Werner found guilty of Lufthansa heist (He wasn't the mastermind, it is believed to have been orchestrated by James Burke of the Lucchese crime family based on information he received secondhand from Werner. The heist also involved mobster Henry Hill and was a central plot point in Martin Scorsese's film "Goodfellas" en.wikipedia.o...)
24. Michelob Light
25. CBS Newsbreak
26. CBS Station ID

Miracle Whip- The bunch of singing burger puppets in this commercial make it look a nightmare scene from a movie. Frosted Flakes- Considering that the “Secret Formula “ for Frosted Flakes is only sugar, Tony the Tiger must be one exceptional sugar junkie to heavily guard something like that.

Grease - It's been 45 years since it first came out in theaters and it's one of the highest-grossing musical movies of all time!

01:16 - There was no CGI involved! So they really had to make over twenty plus hamburger puppets for this Miracle Whip commercial that made you feel like you just took severe hallucinogens.

1:59 - For those who don’t know, Pink Lady was a Japanese pop duo who after achieving enormous popularity in their home tried to cross over to American success. This resulted in an ill-fated variety TV show called Pink Lady and Jeff, where they hosted alongside comedian Jeff Altman. It was riddled with problems, chief among them that the Japanese hosts didn’t speak English very well. It only aired five episodes, and is considered one of the worst TV shows ever.

Pink Lady and Jeff is also touted as the show that killed variety shows for good.

@@Misfit_KittenThere were others on the air after Pink Lady & Jeff, like the Mandrell sisters show. That one was popular for a while. I know there were more, but other than the Mandrells I can't remember what they were.

I noticed in the McDonalds ad that the Big Mac is built using one piece of cheese. I used to make these 23 years ago working at McDonalds and I am pretty sure we used two pieces of cheese and still the case today.

The Big Mac back then was always made with only one slice of cheese. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/3/3b/BigMacButton1975.png

"The more you take, the more you give". How awesome is THAT? You don't see that in commercials these days! Also the Raisin Bran bus driver was fired for insubordination later that day.

I remember renting the Hobbit on DVD during the 2000s. I can’t believe it took me until then to finally watch it. Also, I agree that Three Mile Island getting blown out of proportion was what led to the Western nations trying to get out of nuclear power. Yeah it’s not completely carbon free, but it is more reliable than other green options these days. Plus, with new advancements (like fusion) make it more viable.

The big issue is that for a roughly 30 year period the U.S. and many other countries were not investing in new nuclear power plants at all due to safety concerns, therefore delaying development of safer systems...sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

9:05--When there was talk of Jerry Brown challenging Carter for the 1980 presidential nomination, there was a joke that if he became President, Linda Ronstadt (who he was involved with) would be First Old Lady.

Reading the backstories of some of these commercials and news breaks was very interesting! I remember the 3 mile island incident. I was a little guy and thought the Russians somehow started a war by doing it… weird, I know.

That Kodak commercial…I know it’s trying to be wholesome, but Willy the Clown makes it terrifying.

Lowell Weicker, who incidentally passed away a couple of months ago, ended up dropping out of the presidential race on his birthday (Weicker representing the shrinking Rockefeller/more liberal wing of the Republican Party)

"Grease", "The Hobbit", the Bad News Bears, the Muppets on TV, the type of McDonalds commercials seen here....see, this is why, people that say "pop culture didn't kick in until the 80's" are missing out. Really, the era of great pop culture kicks in with Star Wars in 1977. What sci-fi/fantasy pop culture did they have before "Star Wars"? Just "Planet of the Apes", it feels like. Or maybe it's around when Carter gets elected in 1976 - my point is it's after the era of Vietnam/Watergate/Nixon/Ford. There's a reason why "That's 70's Show" starts in 1976, not in 1970 (because they 70's had more personality by that point). Also, i think 1976 is the oldest uploads on this channel. ;-)

it amazing to see footage of grease when it was still considered new. Flip Wilson was still popular in 79?
