If you're learning, one of the first things you need to know is that the term 'elephant gun' is very fudd. The proper term is a 'stopping rifle'. It can also be described as a 'dangerous game rifle' as DGs are generally larger bore, but a 'stopper' is going to be on the high end of the DG list.

The sheer impact power of that .700 NE is astounding. Virtually destroyed the second and third panels without actually entering them. A ballistic gel vid about the 3 big weapons , might be a bit geeky, but comparing the wound channels would be interesting. BOOM! Oh yeah, can you get .700 holow point? :-)
@Deere2154D3 жыл бұрын
That was basically a hollow point. Had it been a brass solid like the 458 and 500 it would have stayed in one piece and went a lot farther
@outcast1703 жыл бұрын
The wound channels would be pretty interesting to see, but probably fairly predictable results. Just as has been shown with varieties of 12 gauge rounds, some will dump the energy quicker, while others go deeper. As I did say, would still be interesting to see the actual comparisons, but as with the glass here the larger/heavier round delivered more force with less depth, while smaller delivered it slightly deeper. As for this test, I'm fairly certain the 700 did "poke" into the second panel, then slightly bounced or rebounded back into the 1st. Regardless, the energy transfer into the back panels was still impressive to say the least.

The viewers are correct about the glass. Especially on military vehicles the glass goes a certain way because on the outside of the bullet resistance glass is a layer of normal vehicle glass that acts as a sacrificial layer against rock chips and just one extra thing standing in the way before anything actually impacts the bullet resistant stuff. I know this first hand because when I was in the military I broke the sacrificial layer and I freaked out thinking I'd owe Uncle Sam a couple thousand dollars, turns out it's like a $20 glass window and like $7 in glue.

There might need to be a correction to your statement as to the largest elephant rifle. My father worked as a vice president of an importing arms company when I was growing up, and as such I grew up with all sorts of gun industry people coming to the house for various reasons. One such guest happened to have started out working for Holland and Holland in the late 40's after the war and regailed us with a story of a project he was involved in. It seems a young English aristocrat that had been a big game hunter before the war, went on to serve in the British Army and was introduced to a 20mm anti tank round and had the brilliant idea that it would make a great elephant round, what with it being available in armor piercing and all. After the war ended this young man, who seemed to have larger anatomy between his legs than his ears, commissioned H&H to build a double rifle in 20mm Lahti, while they HIGHLY discouraged this, they relented when enough money was thrown their way with the caveat that they would NOT test fire the rifle and that the young man was SOLELY liable for it as such. So the fateful day arrives when he comes and picks up the gun and they didn't hear anything back for almost a year until one day the young man comes back, walking with a cane, and explains what happened. It seems that he actually fired it off a bench with just some serious bruising but otherwise just fine, loading just one barrel at a time. Well, the young man takes the rifle to Africa, and for the first time, loaded both barrels with his new favorite rounds. It seems another hunter in his party had wounded a bull elephant and the bull turned on their group and charged them all, in his haste to dispatch the now VERY pissed off elephant, the young man accidentally pulled both triggers of his double barreled 20mm elephant rifle. He said the young man woke up in a hospital about 2 weeks later with a broken shoulder, crushed ribs, collar bone, cheek bone, rt eye socket and had fractured 2 vertebrae in his neck, not to mention the fractured skull. The gun held together fine, but the recoil from 2 20mm going off at once was a bit to much for a mere mortal to handle, but to his credit, the charging bull was stopped in his tracks with 2 20mm holes, one just above the other, in his head with actual exit wounds out the back of his neck. Moral of the story, when a gun builder tells you your idea is a bad one, just walk away.

Surprising to me that the 700 Nitro's large surface area is what saves the glass, even though the transferred energy broke the panes behind the first. Very cool video! Also, after some quick googling I saw that bulletproof glass can be designed symmetrically or asymmetrically so depending on your panes bullets are designed to be stopped from a single direction.
@lucas37863 жыл бұрын
The reason the plastic is in the back is because the glass is made to break up the bullet first, and the plastic is made to catch the pieces of bullet. It also helps when driving a armored vehicle, you wont get covered in glass shards

Fun trivia: In the early days of WW1, the Germans used steel plates to protect themselves from British fire, so the British took a bunch of elephant guns and pressed them into service, which were able to punch through them. They later evolved into the anti-tank and anti-material rifles we all know and love today. EDIT: Now I'm wondering if someone makes Xtreme Penetrator rounds for .700 Nitro Express. I know .50AE hollow points don't go through 3A body armor, even though it will cause a ton of backface deformation, but .50AE Xtreme Hunters from Underwood will.

The 700 has way less penetration than I would have expected. I guess it makes sense with the increased surface area/weight of the bullet vs the powder behind it. I'll bet the steel jacket is necessary to get what the penetration it does. to be extra fair though, the 458 was a brass solid, not lead with 2 jackets. I love these elephant gun videos. Since no one ever shoots a 700 nitro, the gun community is getting very valuable information from your videos. 👍

I really think the rounds don't matter, the problem in this case is that it's just glass sitting on a table, mount that in a wall or car door where it can't just fall over and those pieces of glass would stand no chance against it. I'm not a bullet proof glass expert, but I know just enough about physics to know that the way the glass fell over took off tons of pressure (literally.)

The glass, already being fractured, acted much like sand grains. The forces at the impact point had much more surface area to dissipate energy into. Successive shots through laminated glass are never mere successful unless the amount of glass left in a given area has been depleted or their frame work has given way.
@eddferguson60693 жыл бұрын
Because science.
@jasonkerekesch50123 жыл бұрын
I think you missed some key facts. The 458 and 500 rounds were solid brass and skinnier. The 700 was copper jacket, steel jacket underneath and lead core(from what I can find) not solid steel plus thicker. The last shot went what looked like the same distance as the first shot, even thought the glass was fractured already and acting like sand as you said. 700 round was fatter and softer than the other bullets and mushroomed and lost energy quicker. Your explanation to me, I'm for sure no scientist, doesn't make sense to me. In my simple mind, the more you shoot bullet proof glass the weaker it gets. From all the videos I've seen at least. It could be a factor though.
@matthewarnold67943 жыл бұрын
Yeah, and it's already broken too.
@DigitalHaze655363 жыл бұрын
@@jasonkerekesch5012 The .458 also has about 300 FPS speed advantage. The round is skinnier.....the sectional density is a bit higher at I think .341 vs .293 for the .700 round. When you have both higher sectional density and velocity the difference in penetration on hard surfaces can be dramatic.
@MrDylanm8423 жыл бұрын
@@jasonkerekesch5012 it gets weaker as you chip away but the sand thing still applies. It gets a little better at negating force then eventually you chip away enough that you just go straight through
