Newsboys Original Member Rediscovers Freedom In Christ

Newsboys original member John James almost lost everything trying to live a double life. A miraculous encounter reminded him of the truth of true freedom in Christ.

The first time I heard one of your songs I was around 12 yrs old...my mom and step dad went to help a family friend her husband was physically abusing her. She called my mom and we went over to their house, yes my mom called the police on the way there. This was a regular thing with him, he was a stepdad to her little girls who were my age. That night I stayed in the room with her girls to help keep them calm with everything going on...I also came from a physically abusive home my father was very violent it was all I knew for the first 9 years of my life. Through all of that in those years God was shaping my heart he was with me every step of the way through it all. He gave me this heart for people, so much love and compassion for others. So there I was with these 3 girls they were so frightened because they had never experienced anything like this before. I had never heard Christian music up till this point. One of the questions I had asked the girls is what was their fav song, I was trying to get their minds off of what was going on outside their bedroom door. One of the girls said " breakfast " I had no idea what that was about so they played it for me. SO I was there for them on one of the hardest nights they had come to so far in their lives, God was there I didnt know much about him yet but that song was the beginning of my relationship with him. From the ugly and terrible times in our lives God brings beauty from the ashes. He was always there with me looking back I saw that and finally understood. A few years later my uncle took me to one of the Newsboys concerts and I was blessed with VIP access I was able to meet the band and get pictures and their autographs, it was the best night of my life. It was my first concert ever and it was my birthday. My mom and I had to move a lot so those items were lost somewhere along the way but I still have the memories. Every time I hear one of your songs John James it reminds me of my life story and how I met Jesus. I am forever grateful you let God work through you, no matter your own struggles God still uses you to reach others. In the bible he never looked for the people who were perfect sinless...because there werent any. He came and died for us because he loves us through all of our good and bad times!

when i came to Christ i was listening to his music and didn't know who he was until one day GOD blessed me with an mp3 player from someone and it had the names of the artist i had been listening to on klove radio. i remember seeing the video for entertaining angels and putting it on repeat. He had an influence on the beginning of my walk with Jesus. I'm grateful GOD restored him as our brother.

First time I saw the News Boys was the Summer of 1992 at the Creation Fest held at the Agape Farm in Pa. They even had the spinning drums back then.

Not necessarily. I think if you represent Christ in your career, the standards are higher and keeping him in the band while living a life that doesn’t represent Christ would destroy the band. He needed to step down for refusing to change. If they had kept him on, it could have cost him his soul. They may still be friends. Tough love is what God has to exercise over us at times. Sometimes, it is the only way.

I’m pretty sure they still are. He toured with the Newsboys and shared his testimony on the tour back in 2009 around the time that Michael Tait became the lead singer.
