Thanks for making this. Its a real contribution. I was surprised at how quickly and smoothly the automatic shifts, especially the downshifts, and how nice the engine sounds. This is coming from a first-gen automatic 86 driver.

I have always chuckled when I see or hear of the old, tired manual vs auto argument. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I am fairly certain that we can choose the transmission in the car we want to buy and drive. As far as I know, no one is going to be forced to buy and drive a car with a transmission they don't like. So, as long as you are driving what you chose, and as long as you are enjoying it, nothing else matters.

@takz0743 It's just pure jealousy. When you buy an econo-box car, other men don't give a sh*t about your car. Two doors, four doors, manual, auto, standard trim, luxury trim. They couldn't care less. But, the moment that you buy something even remotely sporty or manly, like a sports car or truck, now you're stepping on someone's dreams. Now, they care because your purchase is entering the area of the cars, trucks, jeeps, or SUVs that they think or dream about. In some weird way, it's like you're spending their dream money on something that they would never buy. Purchasing a bland little commuter car doesn't step on their troubled egos or unrealized dreams. The instant that you buy something that is seen as cool, fun, sporty, luxurious, fast or big, and badass, look out! Other dudes are going to talk sh*t because oftentimes, they aren't satisfying their own desires. They're jealous that you're satisfying your desires and not just buying a car that is basically just another tool like a lawnmower that gets the job done and doesn't do much else. I think that these sh*t talkers need to grow some willpower and a big set of balls and create their own dreams, instead of dick riding on other men's dreams. "Oh, you should've got the V8 with the manual transmission! Boo hoo!" "No, motherf*cker! YOU should've got the V8 manual! Get off the f*ck off my cloud and go buy your own f*cking dream car, bitch!"

I actually prefer the AT over the manual. You forgot to mention that when in manual mode, you can also shift up & down with the shifter knob too. I alternate between that and the paddles as needed. In the twisties, the paddles also offer you the ability to shift while keeping both hands on the wheel - love it!

You hit the nail on the head. All modern sports car, super car, formula 1 cars uses paddle shifters. You don’t buy these cars and drive in automatic mode. I’m a year late posting a comment. I’ve had mt’s in plenty of my wife’s and I cars and trucks. Had surgery on my right ulnar nerve several years ago. Still can drive a mt, just not for more than a month or two, before excruciating pain and swelling begins below my elbow. DSG has been a little blessing. It’s just not the same interaction and feeling of blending with the car. I’ve been searching for a specific review of this MX-5 auto. Most of my questions and concerns have been answered. I appreciate you shared your experience with the RF auto. My 19’ Arteon did not come with the DSG. I still tuned the ECU to just about 400hp/390tq. The 8 speed trans is not tunable. It has faux paddles, just as the MX-5. I simply learned the right speeds to maximize which gear to be in, for whatever scenario I am in. I assume the MX-5 is no different. ✌️

I never get car youtuber's meme-like obsession with manual shifting. At this point I think it's just what everybody *has* to say. I can drive manual, learned on manual and over here in Europe it was the default choice for many years. Yet, I can say for me personally, shifting isn't what makes the driving fun. The reality is that most people don't drive alone on nice mountain roads 99% of the time. In reality, at least in urban areas, you drive in stop and go most of the time. There is zero "fun" in shifting there.

Agreed. I rented a Porsche Boxster with a PDK and drove it as my daily for about a week. It was a blast! Then I went back to my manual VW Rabbit and the shifting was so effortful. I put the Boxster in manual shift mode frequently and that gave me exactly what I want out of a manual transmission: control. And it did so without the downside of a manual (in situations like heavy traffic): effort.

I have a 2021 MX5 Sport with the automatic & live in N.Y.C. with nothing but wall-to-wall traffic! And I pity the other drivers who might be driving a manual. while in all the traffic. But when I am on the open highways I smile & enjoy the fun & handling of the car. Most people who complain about the automatic have never even driven the automatic MX 5 & say it is for handicapped people. I think they are the ones who have a problem & are really handicapped in the way of their thinking.

You will never out shift the computer. The auto gearbox will always be quicker. If one insists on driving like a pissed off teenager, the auto also offers manual shift mode, presumably with rev matching. As an ex professional driver, where I often had to pick up 11 gears to get to 40 mph, standards quickly lose their appeal LOL As personal preferance, I would always choose an auto over a standard.. but thats just me.

I added the front strut tower brace to our automatic RF and I don't think it changed ride too much, but I do think the normal dampers are much more comfortable than the Bilstein dampers. My friend has a manual RF, and although our has a bit more body motion, it's much less bouncy and feels more composed on rougher surfaces. We also ended going from 17" to 16" wheels for meatier tires and more ride comfort. I think the best mod for more "power" is a shorter final drive. Extra kick without the hassle of forced induction. Going from 3.58:1 to 4.1:1 made the car feel much quicker, and in normal cruising, it doesn't confuse the AT either. Only difficulty is sourcing them...

This is definitely one of the best videos on this topic. Thanks for all the effort that went into making it. From 1990- 2023 - 33 years - all we (my wife and I) drove were manuals. From Civics to Miatas to Corollas and pick ups. We always had at least one manual in the driveway. Then, last summer, we bought a low mileage 2009 PRHT GT with the 6AT. We absolutely love this car! If you want to put it in D and go, you can sit back and allow the “shift manager” do his work. Or, if you’re like me, and crave the sound of the high revving engine and those satisfying downshifts, you slap it into manual mode. It’s a lot of fun! We have zero regrets.

I get bad traffic and after a terrible day of work I don’t wanna shift a clutch and have to focus. The haters are always driving some lame grocery getter suv and just want to put you down. The car community is super toxic and is why I left long ago. Autos can be fun too. I really enjoy the paddles on my 370z. I've owned 8 manuals and driven big rigs with 20 gears, but I've been done with manuals for years now. It's funny that young guys think they are more manly or better drivers because they can drive sticks. When I was growing up, you bought a used car if you liked the style or if the price or if it ran well. If you were lucky, then you found all three in a car. The transmission type was secondary. If the car had a manual, then you taught yourself to drive a manual. Manliness, driving skill or prowess had nothing to do with it. The transmission was simply another part of the car. The only reason that you might've preferred a manual was if you were into racing cars or you preferred the ease of repairs and the lower replacement costs of a manual. However, now that I'm nearing retirement and I've spent over 45 years commuting in traffic jams everyday. I'll never own another manual. Auto transmissions today are so much better than the crappy old two and three speeds autos of the past. All you have to do is get stuck in traffic a few times going up a huge hill or mountain for 2 hours and you'll realize why manuals are almost completely extinct now. They're a ton of fun for about 10-20% of your driving time. Then, they're meh, okay for up to about 60-70% your driving. But for the remaining 30-40% of your driving, they completely suck ass and they make you wish that you had never bought one. And that's being generous.

One of the reasons people end up in a Miata is because they can’t afford a Lexus or similar. The Miata was what was there on the lot and met their needs at a low price point assuming they’re in the used car market. In my opinion get the Miata that is available because if you don’t it’ll fly off the lot before you get your chance. If it happens to be an auto and you really do care, you can do a Tran swap when the funds become available and you’ve done your research. Enthusiasts have a problem with non enthusiasts choosing to buy a Miata, I think. Which is sort of ridiculous because those people may very well choose to go manual with it in the future. It isn’t as if when you buy an auto all other options disappear.

It's cool that I made such a video. I personally think that a person does not shift gears better than a modern automatic machine. and you absolutely do not need mechanics if you are not a racer or you are not going to raise the car's capacity to very high values. and we will not forget that in all the insisted super cars, there are AUTOMATIC transmissions in one sense or another. yes, of course there is a robotic transmission, BUT BY and LARGE this is the same automatic switching, and for some reason no one says that in pagani, Koenigsegg, or 911 there is less pleasure from driving due to the fact that there is a modified transmission, although it differs from the mx5 transmission, but the price also differs as well as money.

Newsweek recently reported that just 18 percent of the motoring public can operate a car equipped with a manual transmission. That number falls into low single digits among younger drivers. The mint 2002 NB I obtained as part of a settlement with a local garage that blew up my MGB's motor is an automatic. It can be driven by 100 percent of the market, something most car dealers understand but are reluctant to admit. While I sorely miss my manual MGB, I'm slowly warming up to my new-to-me Miata's automatic. Sorta. Love the handling, convenience and the dependability of the MX-5. While I've pondered trading for a manual NB (and I still might if the right car comes along), the automatic is growing on me. This vid makes a bunch of valid selling points for keeping the automatic.

We watched several different KZbin channels on learning how to drive a manual a few months prior to purchasing the car and once it arrived we were ready to go. We applied what we had learned from the videos and it helped a great deal. The only thing I was concerned about was stopping on hills, but I just went out in the evenings and practiced. The hill start assist on the MX also makes it easy.

Great video! One question, exactly what type of automatic transmission does the 2024 Miata have? I understand that it's a torque converter transmission from over 10 years ago. It would be great if someone could share more technical details :)

Fiat 124 Spider Abarth (same car with NC trans and Turbo) comes standard with Limited Slip, Bilsteins, and roll bars for both MANUAL and AUTOMATIC. Don't understand why MAZDA still doesn't do this for the autos.

Drove an nd rf auto last night. Was plenty fast and enjoyed it, downshifting into first in manual mode is clunky BUT just let the car do that and it’s almost unnoticeable.

I never understood that too. I am buying a manual but never saw how all reviewers kinda laughed upon even the thought of automatic.

I currently have a little 2022 Santa Cruz limited that has the dual clutch transmission. It’s amazingly responsive to shifting almost all the time… The only problem is, the transmission fails… It would be an amazing transmission in this little Miata! I think I’m going to trade my Santa Cruz in for a Miata with a manual transmission but seriously, the DCT would be amazing in this car.

A DCT would really wake up the driving experience in this. I feel like they would sell a lot more (autos) if it had a DCT

Mountain and hills in traffic with stop and go driving makes an automatic mandatory for me! Flat driving is required for relaxing if you own a manual as a daily!

You do lose a little rwhp with the auto, but autos tend to shift quicker and can handle more horsepower & torque. So, it doesn't come with the limited slip, strut tower brace or Bilstein shocks, who cares, there is always the aftermarket. For me that is a big selling point, the aftermarket parts support for the Miata's. Today I actually sat in a Miata RF w/auto to size it up for a late midlife crisis vehicle. On the front grill, driver's side, there looked to be an on-board radar for adaptive cruise control, but I don't see it on this Miata?

I timed the delay between pressing the paddle shifter and the down shift actually occurring at 11:50. It took 0.44 seconds. Not acceptable to me. The Porsche Macan also has this kind of delay even with a PDK! But plenty of non-dual clutch transmissions and cars do _not_ have _any_ delay.

I like a good auto. Watching your vid it looked as if the auto was shifting at around 5k most of the time and with a manual you could be taking it to7 plus with each shift and taking advantage of all that extra power and fun at the upper range where the car really likes to shine. I believe for this car a manual would be a very good choice.

Is not that Automatic transmission is bad, is a very engaging car nevertheless. But is definately not the same and not as engaging/connected tithe car as having a manual transmission. Same goes with the LSD diff. You can drive it without it and will be fun but is not the same as having it fitted.

I do NOT want an automatic BUT there are times I HATE having to use a clutch....the ANSWER? An E clutch or IMT I want the same EClutch Honda is putting on a motorcycle already! The motorcycles ecu senses wheelspeed etc and automatically disengages the clutch when it knows you are stopping and conversly when your foot nudges the shift lever while in nuetral it immediately pulls in the clutch and then waits for throttle when it will perfectly begin engaging the clutch for you.....same for shifting you NEVER need to pull the clutch in though it is ever an option ....THIS is what I want for my manual sport car! It is all totally possible these days because of the computers the cars have already with the sensors tracking rpm throttle position wheel speed....so all ANY manu transmission vehicle needs these days is the robotics to operate the clutch and the the programming of course. One of the main reaon people with sports cars might shun a manual transmission is how MISERABLE the clutch becomes in stop ad go traffic! A true E clutch is SO overdue! WHY dont we have them already for years now! The simplicity and wonderful fun and character of a manual with all the benefits of and automatic! Well a lot of the benefits you still have to shift ....imagine just banging through the gears with no clutch pedal needed! Plus yu CANT screw up! The computer makes sure the clutch is disengaged before you shift as opposed to the possibility of error without that!

This is a direct injection motor. It’s susceptible to carbon build up on the valves…..premium fuel is a simple way to mitigate that risk. Don’t be cheap and use 87 octane.

Sounds like a bunch of excuses. But it is a most def good buy for an old person w bad legs (although they’ll have a hard time getting in and out with it being so low and small). It would be good for handicapped folks (with the exception of getting in and out). And it would be good for women. Unfortunately my 25 year old lil bro just bought one.. red, automatic…. He let me down.

If you are unfortunate enough not to be able to drive manual, for whatever reason, then yes, an auto MX5 will still be fun. But not as much fun as a manual MX5. What I do not get are folk who CAN drive a manual but still buy an auto MX5, therefore depriving themslves of a bunch of fun they could otherwise enjoy. There's a reason Mazda don't put the Bilsteins etc on the auto - the Bilsteins etc are all about having fun with the car, and so is the manual 'box. Auto are great for big mobile armchair-like cars, but do not suit an agile lightweight sports car. Just as you might put cream in your coffee, you wouldn't put it into a nice glass of Chablis (well, most folk wouldn't).
