Tony, I used to work in a metallurgical lab for an aerospace company. We performed weld trials on 7075/2024 sheet and got to watch in real time under a microscope (relatively.. over a week), the natural aging process of the material pulling constituents from the weld zone as the material hardens after solutionizing. After a couple of days, the weld was swiss cheese, the parent material was consuming the weld alloy as it aged. We also pulled tensile samples, initially (within an hour) of solution and welding, the samples performed as well as the parent material control samples, but over the course of 24 hours, the results severely tapered off. As your video said, welding this material to use as a shim in compression, I wouldn't see a problem. But I would not trust a weld on 7075 or 2024 in tension.

Hey Tony, love the episodes. I think you might find this interesting. Around the start of 2019, a process was actually developed so that you can weld 7075. The reason you cannot weld it is because the heat around the pool causes the alloying components in the aluminium, to diffuse out of the "correct" structure. After the pool has solidified, the structure is no longer the same as its surrounding. The difference is so drastic that the two areas behave as two materials which don't bond perfectly to each other. This results in the cracks you had mentioned, and then failure. Through lots of testing and such, a researcher in UCLA found that by adding a percentage of titanium carbide particles, to the aluminium filler rods, you drastically reduce the level of diffusion and therefore the possibility for cracks. This process has been proven to work, and the researcher even built a bicycle using it. I've linked the article on it below. Its well worth a look. newatlas.com/welding-aa7075-aluminum-alloy/58449/ Anyway, hope you find this interesting. Keep up the good work.

Or, and I'm no expert, howevere I've told many motorbike owners that their ignition timing was off, just to see how tough and confident they really are - they never laugh but I get a respsonse so red hot you could weld titanium with it. Fortunaltely because their ignition timing is off I could usually outrun them, or just scramble up a tree, start meowing and wait for the fire department to show up. But couldn't you just have welded a bead onto the steel frame where the pegs hits it...? Granted it wouldn't have allowed you to weld non-weldable material, so I get that, we all have a bucketlist.
@robokid200013 жыл бұрын

The sight of those studded pedals made me remember how badly those things ruined my teenage shins.
@Shaun.Stephens4 жыл бұрын
Shins? You're lucky! I had a 2-stroke off-roader with similar pegs (except all steel and narrower). One day, far from the madding crowds it just wouldn't start (damn 2-strokes!). So, after checking spark, fuel etc I tried to push-start it - for an hour! At the end of that time, exhausted, I tried one more time. Downhill slightly, got up to speed, clutch in in second gear.. When I was up to speed I jumped on the seat sideways as I dropped the clutch to ensure the tyre bit and then jumped off again and leaned into it... After about 5 seconds the bike took off like a scalded cat, dragging me away forwards with it and I fell on my face with my right arm up over the bike. The footpeg cut a 15 cm gash into my right armpit. It was a long hot summer (think sweaty armpits) and, as a tough country teenage boy I didn't go get stitches or anything. It was a puss-ey nasty mess for weeks. At first it semi-healed with a chunk of armpit skin folded into the wound and the hair kept the wound open so I had to pick it apart, shave what I could and use sticking plaster to keep things in place until it healed properly. I envy you your sore shins. I still have a big scar in my 'pit 40 years later.
@DjDolHaus864 жыл бұрын
@ChrisHallett83 yeah that was pretty much my experience, they offered superior grip if you had your feet square on the pedals but God help you if your feet slipped. John Coops Thank you. The world has apparently turned into a culture that exemplifies the art of pretending to be politically correct whilst studying your own rectum through a monocle! Had I known, I would have bought stock in cranium lube, optical grinders and Google - until everyone figured out that they work for the intelligence agencies. PS All this bull$hiiiit (intentional) about track and trace apps failing is hilarious. Google has been tracking and tracing its users for years. We are being Ziofucked by psychopathic elites, and the cretins are going along with it.
