707s at Southend - Part Four

707 336C A7-AAC, Ex- BOAC , British Airways G-AXGX arrives in February 1995 for a year long stay at Southend, before departing for the USA.
Also glimpsed in the video, Bristol Blenheim G- BPIV and Tupolev Tu134A-3 RA-65941 on it's only visit to Southend.

Thanks for uploading this Robin. At 4:05 I think I recognised an ex Transmeridian GPU! When we had DC8's at TM (They were what killed the company, but that's another story), the thrust reversers were always sticking on those JT 3's. Caused us engine fitters loads of problems.

Wow, I knew reverse thrusters were used to reverse on smaller jets like the DC9 but never seen this on a 707. Thanks for the upload and insight.

They had the same engine as 737 200

James Aherne not quite. The 707 and DC8 had the Pratt & Whitney JT3D. The 737 200 and the 727 had the Pratt & Whitney JT8D. The PW8D was a more modern engine but still noisy.

As cool as it is or was-what was the company or reason to locate maintenance ops in Southend? Looking at the numerous other airfields all over Britain and that close to London?? Thats what I dont get?

Heavylift had 707s in their fleet, so had the staff qualified to maintain them. Southend needed the work, and long-term storage was probably cheaper than alternative sites.
