70ton dumper stuck in mud pulled by D10 dozer

Күн бұрын

This CAT777 dumper got stuck in a soft muddy spot and it took a D10 dozer as well as a big loader to get it out.
We loaded this dumper with single wheels at the rear because owner was waiting for new tyres to be delivered.
To get to the offloading point we have to cross under a bridge which is too low for us to pass under. We then offload before the bridge and the dumper drives under the bridge by its own where we load it again further to offloading point.
After passing under the bridge we got stuck in a soft muddy spot. Probably would not have; if we had duals on the rear of the dumper.
Dumper is working on Coal mine in South Africa near Johannesburg.

@The Bushwacker To be fair it it had snapped then it could still have killed him, there was no need for him to be that close and I assume all the drivers had radio sets anyhow. He did save the day though ... cough. We had a dumper roll back too far to tip into the crushing mill and ended up vertical in it! That took a long time to get out due to having to hire a heavy crane. He was not Mr Popular with the mine manager as we could not crush any limestone for days.

I drove triple 7's like that when we were building Denver International Airport. we were running them with double belly dump trailers though. Just before I started there they had one get stuck and tried to pull it out with a D-11 Cat dozer, it pulled the front axle assembly out from under the truck. Usually when they got really stuck they would use a Hoe to take as much of the load out as possible and then separate the trailers off and THEN pull the truck part out. It was long process.

this wasnt being pulled by a steel line, but rather a nylon tug strap. i had to use them to pull sand and water trucks up muddy hills in my D6TXL cause chains and wire rope are not allowed. ive seen them break also, they dont snap and whip around, they just sort of break and expand. they get longer actually, sometimes its not that apparent except for a loud bang. the cover usually stays intact but you can feel a knot where the strands broke.

They have elastic properties that's why we make springs out of them. In one of my jobs in Queensland I saw a Samoan guy get cut in half by a 3/4inch tension wire that was being pre-stressed by twin 120ton hydraulic jacks for a concrete beam. The bloody thing snapped and cut the 200lb man right in half thru the torso. It was a gruesome sight and to answer your question, Yes high tension steel does have elastic properties sir.

All metals have elastic properties sometimes you can see it and sometimes you can't. With a cable this big you can't but if it snapped it would be moving at a few hundred feet a sec, maybe faster. But going off of jfdb59 and 04mxz440 since I didn't notice the wrapping till now and don't know much about the cabes since I'm not in a career that uses them but it wouldmake sense that it could keep them from snapping wildly.

Those slings basically fall straight to the ground when they snap. I've seen a damged strap snap, i was on the dozer pulling a Komatsu 930e truck out of a bog with a D11r, the truck empty weighs around 250 tonnes, the most dangerous slings are wire like 4wd winches and also nylon snatch straps etc. That sling pulling the truck out weighs so much it takes about 3 men to lug it around and hook it up and the weight has a dampening effect when it breaks.

metal does have elastic properties. Its actually what happens when you torque bolts. you stretch the bolt, and since it has a natural tendancy to return to its original form, it creates pressure between the head and whatever it resting on. rim, flange ect... this pressure is what stops it from loosening. same basic priciple with cable, except with a long peice, you get back lash.
@jfdb59
@jfdb59 12 жыл бұрын
Yes it will. That is presuming it snaps back at all. Chains have such a low tensile strength in comparison to braided cable that they fail before they actually have enough energy stored in them to snap back. In other words, they don't stretch much because they break. And if they do they'll usually bind the link tight, further preventing flexibility and thus snapping back. If it was to swing to the side there'd have to be a force causing it to move that way. There is none. Only straight tension.

There you go, you get what you pay for ! Could't afford to wait for the new tyres but ended up paying way more for other machines to be transported down to get it out of the mud.

People are saying the strap could snap and kill the guy. Actually no.... A line needs to be under a significant amount of tension AND STRETCH before it can whip sideways after a break. This can happen with steel cables and ropes frequently , but less often with a giant heavy strap like this. The line also has to carry a lot of MOMENTUM as well to whip sideways , which a big heavy strap like this has a hard time doing under it's own weight. If this big strap were to break , it would simply rip and fall down from it's own weight and lack of tensile energy it can store. It acts more like a big rolled up blanket. If they tried this with a tiny metal cable then yes that could stretch and whip sideways very easy.

and here's a tip bud, they're safely out of the way of a tow chain/strap that could snap and turn them into two people

when the cable is snapped it never snaps dead center on the line (the point where its connected to) snapping a little to the left or right sends the cable flying into the opposite direction. I have seen it happen way to many times, luckily none of my guys have been hit, because we did not stand right by the cable.

I wouldn't stand anywhere near that cable. I was working in the Congo, and a 300-ton scraper got stuck - it's a huge bowl on wheels with a blade underneath. They rigged up two 200-ton dump trucks to pull it out. One of the cables snapped and cut a man in half.
