My grandfather was captured by the North Korean soldiers on patrol while escaping to Busan with his family early in the war. Not only did he manage to escape, he had to cross both the KPA line and the Allied line of the Busan Perimeter in order to *hopefully* find his family again. He did just that by crawling. He finally found his family then volunteered for the ROK army. After the Battle of Incheon, they broke out of the Busan Perimeter. There was nothing "glamorous" my grandfather did in the war. Most of the soldiers and even officers made sure he and other student soldiers stayed away from the very front of the lines to their capabilities, making him run for ammo, pass messages, and give food to the soldiers. Of course, he's still in danger of enemy artillery which he was. He had to watch a lot of his "hyung-nims" die fighting at the very front. My grandfather was only 16 when this happened. He refuses talk any much more about this and that is fine. He still served in the ROK military for additional 20 years before entering government service. At the end of it all, his superiors granted him his final wish, to go to America. During the dictatorship period of South Korea, it's difficult to travel or move to anywhere especially if you worked for the government (so my mother says). He's living as best as he can but still struggles from nightmares time to time. He loves his family gatherings.

The true story of the South Korean student soldiers, who fought all over Korea, still in their school uniforms, is worthy of respect. I remember seeing the exhibit on them at the South Korean War Museum in Seoul and having it all explained to me. They were heroes, one and all, and I salute them.

Sad that the leader of the 71 never saw the end of the war. Despite his heroic sacrifice, he died seeing the commander of the relief force holding onto him, only knowing that whoever was left alive would be okay. As someone wrote, "The good guy that dies at the end of his journey never gets the happy ending that he deserves. He never gets to see the outcome of his actions, the freedom that is won, the tears of joy and sacrifice. He never able to see the love interest or know if they came out alive and intact. He can't celebrate because he never there when everyone cheers at the peace that is won. At their final moment, all they see is that the bad guy went down with them, and only can think of, 'Is everyone alright? Did we do it? Is my job finally done?'"

No, in terms of democracy, S.Korea did not have democracy and freedom for a long time, also before 1980s, N.Korea was richer, it was people from S.Korea escaping to N.Korea back then. Under control of Syngman Rhee, people had worse life and less freedom than N.Korea at that time. Just like before WW2, Americans were escaping the USA and lining up to immigate to USSR. Different period, different situation.

This movie is not a documentary, but an artwork produced to acutally make people feel something. Naturally, there are a lot of details which had to be sacrificed to make this film a proper movie, not a war documentary. I understand them. I think those alterations were necessary. Some altered details I recall: The student soldiers actually fought in this battle were of somehow higher standards than depicted in this movie. They volunteered in quite earlier stage of the war (when the South Korea was less desperate). A significant portion of them were college students. Other students (highschoolers) were also older than depicted (during older days, school was more of a luxury, and there were many student who were a bit older than the modern standard age). Most of them were at already 'seasoned' state through some months of battles, all along from the Seoul region to the Nakdong River. These volunteer student soldiers were not 'barrel scrapes'. They were given regular uniforms, mil ID numbers, regular enlistment process and corresponding trainings. There could not be any 'convict boy gang soldier' among them like in the movie. The actual main battle happened before the sunrise, commenced by a North Korean surprise attack. The surroundings were all dark. Consequently, the battle was mainly a very fierce close combat in the school building, often culminating to melee fights. So the actual fights were much more violent than depicted, but it would have been more difficult to make the choreography because of obvious reasons. The North Korean troop fought here was 'the 766th independent battalion', with an obvious mission of sweeping all the eastern coastline of the peninsula. I don't think that their leadership were in conflict about their objectives. The whole "political commissar and troop commander conflicting" thingy was indeed a widespread plague in North Korean army (which actually continues today), so I don't find it too much incorrect. Some dozens of South Korean student soldiers were captured alive. Maybe they were 'neutralized' during the aforementioned melee fights. A few weeks later, the tide of the war has turned and North Korean troops were forced to hastly retreat. During this retreat, many of the captured student soldiers succeeded to escape (but a few went missing during the escape attempt, likely shot and fallen into tall plants, or even recaptured). I heard that the survivors of the battle (including the veterans interviewed at the ending credits of the film) are them. Among the South Korean soldiers in the main battle, there were a few adult soldiers, but they were rear echelon troops, mainly military band. There were no survivors among them. The South Korean 3rd Division was still fighting in the Pohang area, struggling (they were largely driven away, south of the Hyeongsan River). But the school was indeed in an isolated position (north of the Hyeongsan River), hard to reach from the Division HQ. It is true that relieving the isolated student soldiers was unlikely.

The letter on the chest from the last scene is probably inspired by the actual letter displayed at the War Memorial Museum in Seoul. It was from a 17 year old student to his mother. It really got to me when I read the first line. "Dear mother, I killed people today. Even though they are our enemies, I think they are people just like us. My heart is heavy and deeply frustrated that we have to kill people that speak the same language and share the same culture." This student was killed in action next day. Adults started a war and these young boys that didn't even get to understand the world had to fight. And more than 10,000 of these students under 17 of age fought the war and more than 7000 of them perished. Imagine a mother reading her son's last letter. "Dear mother, I killed people today." As honorable as these boys' sacrifice were, this is definitely not something any parents want their high school son to go through. And most definitely not the last experience of their tragically short time on earth. Worst part is that these boys were not recognized as veterans for the longest time. It took more than 50 years for people to learn about existence of the student soldiers and Korean government to acknowledge and recognize their sacrifice. This was because they were technically never enlisted in the military and existence of "child soldiers" was not exactly beneficial thing for the government to admit. Many student soldiers that survived the war died without being recognized before their death. And a lot of them didn't even know they had to be recognized because they just thought it was the reality of war and they were just part of it. I am glad this movie was made so more people can remember their bravery and remind us the horror of war.
