C The Art I'm struggling to make a 1 level Super Mario rip off set in an Ancient Kingdom. Where you jump, collect power ups & find arrows for your bow which then can be used to kill enemies. And once you get to the end you have a boss battle & if you beat the boss then it goes to an animation of the evil spirit that haunted the Kingdom gets killed by his own spooky green fog. How much of a rip off is that, good luck with your pong though & hopefully you gift me luck on my Kingdom Escape game

Sanket Jadhav that'll be me when I make my 1st & 2nd game. 2nd is Probably gonna be a FPS where all you can do is turn 360 & no scope some kinda enemies. And I haven't even finished my 1st game yet where you escape an Ancient Haunted Kingdom. Trust me it sounds worse than it is. ONE LEVEL, JUMPING, POWERUPS, BOWS & ENEMIES. nothing cool looking & no secret tunnel ways & what not. Sorry I wrote a wall of words

I'm really impressed by your apptitude for value, it was really interesting to see just how much of a difference a good sense of value makes when working with the limitations of pixel art, especially when you also have a limited pallet at times

The hand drawn art is just concept work created to help the pixel artist create the pixel work. Pixel art and animation is all done by hand and is time consuming, so creating concept art ahead of time let's them just get to work crafting a pixel version of the creation and then animating it. A lot of times the design doesn't make a 1 to 1 translation to the pixel world but that's totally fine. The line work is just concept work created to inspire the pixel artist, to free up their mind so they're not having to spend time coming up with ideas on top of creating a pixel version that makes sense. Many times they see the concept and are inspired to craft something different but in a similar vein as what was drawn. Sometimes what's drawn in line work just doesn't work in pixel art.

Always surprised how quick these small games can be made. I've worked on and off with game development and basic pixel art for a while now and find it a struggle to even think of art assets, let alone doing them to a decent quality. Any advice for working on art assets to keep motivated and not to nod of while doing it as I find it very hard to keep my concentration on the work.. I know it's a rather strange thing to ask but I am genuinely interested in knowing. Love the art work for the game btw.

+Leighton Williams Not an expert by any definition but i would try to find out what causes you to get demotivated in the first place. Maybe you are setting your goals too high and feel you're making no progress, maybe you get demotivated because you feel your work is not good enough. If you know the cause you can try to fix that. What also can work is to use the DGPA method: www.dumblittleman.com/2011/05/how-to-turn-your-dream-into-plan-in.html If you follow these steps you should be able to stay motivated and reach your goals.

+Leighton Williams I'm not an expert either, but I have started loads of projects that I've never finished and I have 1 good tip for you - Make a to-do list from the start, write down just about every little thing you need to do, and don't erase the ones you finish, mark them as completed.
@amindler8 жыл бұрын
+Leighton Williams This is actually a very common issue and hard to address. For us, being on a team really helps. You can help keep each other going. The constrained time frame also helps. You have to make hard decisions fast and stick to them. The sense of comradery and urgency both keep things moving for the 48 to 72 hours.
@Scamalasaurus7 жыл бұрын
Leighton Williams I have the same problem. I have yet to find a fool proof way of solving it but I've noticed that inspiration is a must. That's a given but inspiration is a tricky thing and is often found in unexpected places so it's very difficult to nail down a way of actually acquiring it. I've had brilliant concepts sneak up on me out of nowhere at points in my life where I have no use for them and I've also found myself blocked when I most need that inspiration. Dreams actually play a huge role as far as I've experienced. So much so that if I'm not having regular dreams then I have a hard time finding inspiration. Stress, eating too close to bedtime, a poor schedule, alcohol too close to bedtime, dehydration and a myriad of other things can cause a person to fail to enter REM sleep. REM or Rapid Eye Movement is the deep state of sleep where dreams live and people are capable of avoiding it for years on end without even realizing it. A telltale sign is when you stop remembering any dreams or you don't know if you have them or not because you can never remember them. That's not healthy and it can lead to depression and hopelessness eventually. Dreams are of a vital importance to creative people because they help us to delve into the subconscious and derive visual and auditory data from the abstract information that is typically hidden from us consciously. When you derive something from true inspiration you are taking an idea that has made a home in your head for no seemingly explainable reason and you are giving it life. I personally think that it is explainable though and that the disconnect comes from the fact that our conscious minds have difficulty translating the information that our subconscious minds present to it. This isn't by accident though, the subconscious is designed to automate things so that we don't have to consciously make decisions in order to accomplish simple tasks like breathing. It's a closed system and it isn't really something that I think we can figure out completely but we can observe input and output as well as the fact that doing something more makes us better at it whether or not it's good for us. In so doing it is possible to connect dreams to the things that inspire them to be and it should also be possible to connect the inspiration that dreams give to the eventual results within our physical reality. That said, give yourself a vacation from pressure and let your mind relax. It will initially seem like a waste of time but it isn't. The real waste is in the amount of time which you will spend chasing your own tail in search of answers that don't exist while you try to appease the pressure givers, the worst of which is the pressure giver within yourself.

This is beautiful pixel art, and an interesting gameplay style. It uses the most out of a small playspace. I feel like one thing that needs to be added though, is parallaxing. I love parallaxing because it turns a 2D space into what feels like 3D space. It also gives a great sense of motion. Anyways, great art and awesome game! Great work!

+Ethan Han harder to animate I guess
@amindler8 жыл бұрын
+Ethan Han The bigger crazier drawings were done as conceptual work to inspire people and get ideas for the games and themes moving. the smaller thicker lined versions are trying to take the big drawings and find their silhouette as well as figure out what aspects need to pop so they read well at a small size. Due to being pixel are, the size of things is locked to a certain scale and amount of pixels. We could upres everything if we wanted but it is far more time consuming to animate as well as design and make everything. It also increases the final size of the game. Our pixel art games are super small due to the whole game existing on only a few dense sprite sheets.

My last 3 games I've put together have been pixel art, which sometimes really doesn't complement what the game is. I've been looking at drawing pads/tablets under around $150. What would you suggest in that price range. (I suppose you used one for the art since it is very high detail compared to what could be done with a mouse.)
@amindler8 жыл бұрын
Is recommend the 100 or so bucks Wacom's. They've recently changed their lineup with intuos draw/photo/art/comic and I don't know what the difference is there. But I've used Wacom for years and are the best that I've found. As for pixeling, I'd say just use a mouse.

Thanks!

+Travis Oliver I picked up an older generation Intuos for under $100. The Wacom Bamboo is great, but if you do want a bigger tablet without the price of the current models, consider looking for an Intuos 2 or 3 on Craigslist.
