My gas gauge has not worked for six years in my 65 Coronet. Last year I found a new gas gauge on eBay, purchased it for $100. Took it a long time to get to me. I installed the gas gauge in my dashboard. Hooked my battery back up and turn my key on. The gas gauge kept going higher and higher and higher past full. Then POOF! Smoke came out from my dashboard, just a tiny bit. Then the gas gauge went all the way back down to E. So I toasted my new gas gauge. This was a pretty good indicator that I needed a new sending unit I just had no idea that that could happen. I’ve been looking for a new gas gauge since. But now I know not to install it till I get a sending unit. The way you tested it was awesome I’ve been waiting for a video like that thanks again Joe for the great content.

You may need a new voltage limiter. If it shorted it will send 12v instead of 5-6 like it is supposed to.

few years back when my sender in my 65 dart quite working I bought a 35.00 aftermarket replacement . it worked for about 3 weeks so bought a 125.00 aftermarket replacement unit and when the float was fully engaged it read half a tank 🙄. Got tired of the cheap china crap and ripped out the fuel tank and the sender and installed an RCI 16 gal fuel cell with GM unit 0-90 ohms and bought a cheap Equus 0-90 ohms guage from O'reallys no issues ever since . did buy a replacement sender for my D150 from LMC that said it fit my truck . got it and was about 3 ft. long compaired to the obe that came out of my gas tank? I bent the pick up tube and had to bend the float arm and make adjustments while watching the fuel guage and its been all good now . Merry Christmas to you and your family Joe 🙏🎅⛄

Joe, you're a very grounded guy, and a grounded guy is tops in showing us how proper grounds are grounded. And I'm amazed at how rough some people would hack those B body clusters for aftermarket radios..lol I might need that MeterMatch for the van, i have a new tank and sender, and it shows mostly correct but likes to wonder around at times. I guess the slosh.
@JustMoparJoe2 жыл бұрын
That meter match is supposed to beat the slosh and match the meter to the meter and the sender! Definitely a cool idea!

Wow that was a long ground wire you know you can measure resistance of both the ground and the wire that leads to the fuel gauge you also have to take into account the voltage regulator on the back of the gauge cluster they do make solid state version that gives you dead on voltage when you turn on the key. Merry Christmas Joe and to the family 👪 and have a happy New Year!

Should be able to read some ohm resistance with a volt meter maybe 70 -76omhs full, 20-15 half a tank and 7-10 empty these are just round about numbers but should be in the ball park number wise. Also I think you should get a pulsing voltage at the tank, should have like a voltage limiter somewhere in the system. Bit again not sure just going by what I know or how they work I have never had a problem with the fuel gauge on a old Mopar. Hope this helps some if not let me know I will get a wiring schematic and we will fix it up
@JustMoparJoe2 жыл бұрын
Fixed it today. The aftermarket sender had grounded out inside. I isolated the sender wire again, and cured it! These are 10-80 ohms. It even had an adjustment screw on the float level. I got the gauge nearly perfect!

Maybe classic industries. They peeled after 4-5 years.
