When it comes to small picks, it's kinda hard to beat mil-surplus dental ones. They're a bit short, but they can also have longer handles.

I have the Swanlake picks and I find them really good. They are as good as any I have tried and are a really good price.

Park Tool, a cyling tool brand, has a set of them, smaller and with a magnet on every end.

I have a set of Performance Tool picks like the SwanLake set...I have 4 sets of different picks.. From Channellock to Mayhew to Pittsburgh and Performance Tool... they're all handy and have their place...

Thanks for the vid. I picked up a couple sets of these, and they see good, especially considering the price. Not something I need regularly, but that extra length is key from time to time. Oh I also like that they come in a case, even though it is a bit flimsy. I prefer to keep them all together in a pouch or something.

Got a 10 pc. set from Matco about 20 years ago, they are made by Ullman? Had to reglue the stupid handles back on the shaft from the start, since they would spin? They are great for like $25.

Well, too be honest when I purchased a very similar set of Mayhew CatsPaw long hook & pick set, I was quite disappointed to find out it was Taiwan made despite costing around $50au. Had USA flag on packaging etc. This set might well be just as good @1/4 the price.

I may have like them if they were a mini length

Not really worth it when you can get US made pick sets for not much more - 5pc Tekton set $20, 4pc Channellock $15-25. Or get a cheapie set from harbor freight for $0-2 depending on coupons. Someone at work bought a set of swan lake punches and chisels and they are too soft to be long term functional.

Swanlake makes these long picks. I have not seen the long one from either Channellock or Tekton. And yes, I’ve heard about the Swanlake chisels not holding up. However you will see Swanlake punches of deliberately soft material including brass and plastic here shortly. To mess up those materials Swanlake would have to make them too hard and that does not seem to be an issue with this company.

In aviation there are definitely cases where picks are not expendable tools. Break off the tip in something important and it could cost you hours of work. I have some of the Ullman picks that are made in the USA, and were rebranded by Craftsman, Matco, Blue Point, and others for years. For 20 bucks a set or less they were the best around and made in USA. Sadly Ullman seems to have transitioned to China for producing their picks. Not sure about the quality as I do not own any new ones. Tekton does makes a 4 piece set in the USA that costs 20 dollars on Amazon right now and has hard handles similar to the classic Snap On ones.

Objectively, the Swanlake seems pretty good and is a much better value than the Snap-on. Can't argue that. But I'll stick with my S-O picks and if need be, warranty them out should there be an issue in the future. And I try and support as much American manufacturing as possible.

Anybody aware of companies making picks with a thin shaft(~2mm)? 99% seem to be made out of 3mm or 1/8” wire

I don't understand how Snap On stays in business, being so expensive.

They tell people a single socket cost 40. But if you buy in a set, it's only 35. Most people fall for it.
