722.9 Valvebody Overhaul

In this video, i overhaul the valvebody from the 2005 mrecedes.To determin if you have a VGS 1,2 or 3 valvebody, here are what the last 4 numbers are to the MB part number. VGS 1 valvebody ends in 6632 or 6732. VGS 2 Valvebody MB# ends in 7332. VGS 3 Valvebody MB# ends in 0310

Many thanks for making this video. I used it tonight at the shop and had my valve body apart with no fear of where the check balls and valves go. In the end, cleaning the valve body and shift solenoids (plus new fluid and filter) made a massive difference in the operation of the transmission. Could not have done it without your help. Here's a fun CHUNK of information: new VGS3s are PN 000 901 8008. VGS4s were briefly a thing in the 212s and 166s before they switched to 9-speeds. 724/725 TCMs are already failing after only five years. If you are here doing research for a MB, do yourself a favor and buy yourself one that's pre-OBDII, or at least one with a 722.6. Mercedes transmissions will last forever with good maintenance. The electronics will fail at least once or twice.

Hey Gary I was reading about the 722.9 trannies have a 2010 Mercedes E350 and I have the P0748 code. Flushed cleaned the solenoids, used magnet, put it back and get limp mode and P0748 K1 solenoid. Took it apart and cleaned again, tested resistance 5.7 most of them, tested for clicking 12v for the blue solenoids, the black act different when 12v is applied. So at this point I did not open the TB to clean I am sure it is like the one you did. Is this something that can cause the code and limp. Or is the conductor plate the issue. Looked online and P0748 is not listed in the conductor plate codes. Appreciate what you're doing And would like to know your thoughts on this. I did not check the solenoid for pressure. Can the dirty valve body cause the code, or the plate and/ or k1 solenoid.

Gary, was there any reason that you decided not to remove the valves that are held in by the plates along the edges of the body? I thought at the time it would have been worth removing them and cleaning each one. For example at 26:29 there are valve assemblies under the two plates along the edge that is facing you.

The grease i used is Transgel or Assembly goo (same thing) If you need an overhaul kit, i purchase from Transtar and they have an online ordering system called Transend WWW.Transtar1.com is the website They sell the grease too, there part number is M465TB, not sure part number for overhaul kit.

You really wouldn't have to do this if all is working ok, i would just service the trans, changing the filter, pan gasket and replace the fluid that comes out

Hi Gary, thanks for the video! I'm about to do my 3rd trans service on my 722.9 and would like to clean the valve body out (again) as the first time I did it I noticed a LOT of debris and it made a huge difference. This time it's getting the updated (deeper) pan and the updated filter. Anyway, I'd like to replace the solenoid O-rings this time. Do you have any idea what size they are? I did find a O-ring kit for them but am up in Canada and it's the better part of $100 to get them here !!

I don't really wash the conductor plate, I rinse it with mineral spirits and let it drip, quick rinse. I torque the valve body halves to around 90 inch pounds and the plate to 70 inch pounds, i'm not sure of exact specs but it's very close. haven't really had issues with those torque specs

Also the lower valve body has three small check valves as well. The plate reads Continental VSG3-NAG2 for a '13 c63 amg. Would you happen to know where I could find a diagram for this application?

05 clk are you sure it's a 722.9? can you give me the year make model and engine size, i can look it up for you. If it is a 722.9 it may be version one, for this the valvebody and plate may have to be replaced

It always gets stuck there, i hold the valvebody and push down from the top of the connector, you dont want to break that or you will have to replace the conductor plate/TCM.

Hello, thanks to your video I have cleaned my block + plate + solenoid valves. Thank you. On the other hand, I have a doubt. It was not so easy to put the whole thing back on the car. When I installed the set on the car I paid attention to the large electrical outlet & was able to finish but I did not pay attention to the plastic B3 tube. I inserted this tube correctly & perpendicularly to its place in the block (I did not mount this tube on the gearbox) solenoid valves. So when reassembling the assembly this tube was on the assembly that I was holding in my hands. From what I understand this tube is only used to tighten the clutch in first & seventh gear. I have been driving since Sunday I haven't noticed anything in particular. If I succeeded in assembling the whole, that is to say that the plug came out well & that I was able to correctly tighten the 9 screws of the block, is it possible that this B3 tube was not mounted correctly? If this tube would have been badly mounted can we understand it without disassembly in relation to the reactions of the car?

old viscous ATF causing not enough pressure causing clutch to slip and warp rings loose friction material help shave the bearings and gears So either you take it easy with the clutches or you want to change oil super early to flush suspended junk. ... How about adding an extra filter in the cooler lines with secured connections. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Not sure if they are sold seperatly, but generally they are. on later 722.9 where you can just swap a condutor plate, you could put the solenoids back

Supposedly the solenoid flow rate is programmed into the ECU and if you change it you may have problems. Im sure if you have a dead solenoid its worth a shot. They can be bought separately

Matt to clear the code you need to use Star or autologic Scan tool. Either of the two are will clear the TCM. Have a mechanic you trust do it for you its worth it if its not over100 to 150. That is ifyou want yur car back on the road again.

I found a Mercedes document that says the trans computer is adapted to the particular characteristics of each solenoid valve, and so each valve must go back into the hole it came out of. One, two or three valves can be changed for new valves without a new adaptation, but if 4 or more or changed, the computer must be adapted to the new valves.

Hello there...my problems started after the trans service...3rd gear takes a little longer to engage and if i accerate hard the car shuts down momentarally...if i go a little gentle with the pedal it seems ok...do you have an idea of what it can be? Oem fluid and filter and no error codes or events with mb star.Thank you in advance.Before the service it was fine just ordered the service because i bought it used and to be safe made a general service.its a cls. 320 cdi with the 722.9

@@GaryFerraro already did it...improved a bit but if i press hard when 3rd stars engaging the impression i have is that it doesn't completly engages and has a little slip that causes the momentaraly shutdown to prevent major damage.

@@GaryFerraroNo engine codes.Only gave one right after the service when i sadly realize i had a problem.It was code 0894(Roughly translated gear not plausible or gearbox sliping).It was erased and never showed up. It shuts down briefly a few tenths of a second only on full gas from low revs but keeps on going,it's like a "warning" of hard accelaration...its strange and it is driving me crazy.And it only hapens on 3rd.For example from a stand stop i start moving and let the gears change at 1700 or 2000rpm but if i decide to give full gas on third as soon as it engages the problem hapens...also on sequencial mode.If i let the revs go up since 1st with no kickdown and let them engage at higher rpm 3500 or so it doesn't hapen as long as it is not on full gas...passed 3rd securelly engaged i can again give it full throtle.

I have to replace my transmission. My transmission has the VGS3 conductor place. I found a used one that is the same ID as the one in my car. My question is...is it possible to swap out my original conductor place from my current transmission to the used transmission? And is there anything special I should know about?

May not be able to do that, once programmed they are married to that car, plate may have to be wiped out or a new one purchased, they aren't that bad price wise

Hello, I have a 2007 slk55 AMG with the 722.9, I have a pretty bad flare from 2-3 when cold (almost like its going from 2 to neutral to 3 if that makes sense), as it warms up it gets much better but doesn't go away. Do you think this would help cleaning the valve body? I have no codes present.

I do not think that will help, sounds like a pressure loss or problem with the K1 clutch drum. What are you using to scan the car? just to confirm, your scanning the trans and not the engine correct?

@@GaryFerraro all I have is a icarsoft i980 scanner, it will read some(?) live data from transmission (such as requested gear, current gear, etc) I believe (I’ll have to double check) and it will let me check transmission specific codes, but there are no stored or pending codes. Would it be helpful if I could get a video in the morning of the first few 2-3 shifts of the day?

@@GaryFerraro Doing some research I would agree that it does seem to be related to k1 clutch engagement. If it’s better when warm, and in between 2-3 (does not slip when in gear, just has flare), would that lean towards an internal clutch disc being worn/bad or more towards a solenoid being clogged? Am I going to do more damage if I keep driving this for another month or so until I get the time to do this? I have not dropped the valve body yet to take a look at the solenoids.

@@GaryFerraro I checked the fluid level today after work, fluid is discolored, almost like the color of new motor oil. It doesn’t smell burnt, however I’m going to order a new filter/fluids and do a change before I go any further. Should I change/check anything since I’ll have the pan off and the filter off already anyways? I’ve replaced solenoids on the valve body before on a previous 722.9 so I’m fairly familiar with it. 722.6 does not have the TCM inside the trans, so no programming needed

@@manny8566 If this is a 722.9 and your going to drop the pan, make sure the stand pipe stays in place, they sometimes fall out of place.

I mark them and also take a picture with my phone, the steel balls are used to seal the circuits when the trans is being tested at the plant, the plastic ones are for operation of the trans

Sorry I meant inch pounds. They are stretch bolts and they are not tightening. Just snapped the heads. Took out the others and can see they are real stretched! Just ordered new bolts for $140.
