Great Video BosnianBill. After coming across one of your videos by accident and really enjoying watching it, I've now watched several of your videos and enjoyed them all. You have a great calm & clear way of describing the locks explaining what you are doing. Thanks for your effort.

Bill, this is, hands down, the best verbal descriptions of what we should feel for while picking I've seen. Everything from how to feel the most feedback from the turning tool to where to position the tip of the pick. I wish there were more vids like this.

I have to say. bill. I started watching your vids about a month ago. and it made me want to buy a lockpick set and its a cheap little set. also has some weird picks. anyways after a month and I haven't even really tried practicing a lot and I can pick every lock in my house open and shut maybe spending 10 mins on each lock. thank you so much! I'll never get locked out again lol

I just got my PXS-14 and bought the cheapest brass brinks lock at walmart which turned out to be so easy to pick I was learning nothing from it other then how easy cheap locks are to open without keys. I remember you talking about these brinks commercial locks while I was at the store again today and looking at the package I thought it may have security pins and may help actually teach me how to SPP and proper tension. I was following your directions while watching the video and had it open before the halfway mark and 2 more times again after. This gave me much more confidence in practice and I was utterly surprised the lock contained security pins! Thank you for all the videos and help!

Yes, they're my carry hooks. I like them to ride flat in my pocket so I make them out of stainless feeler gauge in different thicknesses (.023, .026, and .031). They're not pretty, but they work great and the 3 different thicknesses let me attack almost any keyway I run across. I get the material online from Eastern Industries.

You are a true intellectual, and in my opinion a master at your profession/hobby. I wish I could find somebody like you to learn from in person. These KZbin videos are certainly the next best thing! I've gotten pretty good at raking, and especially the rocking technique with the city rake. I have yet to find a standard door lock or deadbolt that I can't rake in a few seconds. I really want to learn *true* picking though. I know that higher quality locks require a true picking pin by pin technique. I'm having a hell of a time *finding* individual pins, even on cheapie four pin padlocks and five pin kwikset locks that I can rake in just a few seconds. I just can't pick them via individual pins yet. I guess I need to invest in a cut away and/or transparent lock so I can get a better feel for what I'm doing. It's a great feeling knowing that I can get into most locks in an emergency/lockout situation, and in your words when that cylinder turns it's one of the best feelings you can get with your pants on! I've already had the opportunity to help friends and family multiple times, and it's a great feeling. Either way I thoroughly enjoy watching a master at work! I've found some super cheap practice locks (transparent so you can see the pins/mechanics) from china, I'm talking like $5. I don't have the $50+ to invest in a good one yet. I think I'm going to go ahead and pick one up, I figure it can't hurt. Even if I only gain a small amount of experience it seems like it's worth $5. I have invested in a couple decent pick sets, and one which is a complete piece of junk. I have the SouthOrd beginner's set which has served me well, and the SouthOrd Jackknife which I'm actually quite impressed with as well. I also picked up a 24ish piece set by Goso which was a complete waste of money. I can't even pick my nose with that damn set. Perhaps some of the tension wrenches will come in handy at least. Do you have any recommendations on inexpensive practice locks? I think I'm going to drop a few bucks on some of the ones from China -- as I said I don't expect much from them, but maybe they'll at least give me a better understanding of what I'm doing. Thank you for all of the time you invest in helping others learn this valuable and entertaining hobby!

Good tips I found that releasing the tension and starting again allows the pins to fall into position more often, and then going back thru the pins again I almost always pop the lock open, or when I go thru the pins the first time I feel the tension give but not open I roll back on the tension then back the lock will open and I've done this repeatedly One other tip I recommend is I have a variety of locks including the 7 pin adversary, I go thru them picking them repeatedly using each of the tools in the kit including the hooks,

Is there a "set" as opposed to a "false set"? If so, what's the difference? I understand the concept of a binding pin and what happens when you push it. Also, when you're applying tension, you appear to tap the wrench a few times. Is that to get a better feel for the lock?
@mikezemba14375 жыл бұрын
Do you add pressure and loosen the tension wrench with standard binding pins also or just the security pins to send him home?

What is a false set ?
@gaeel3309 жыл бұрын
+paul microns When a pin is "set" in that it locks in position and unbinds, causing another pin to become the binding pin, but isn't aligned correctly. Security pins are designed to make false sets happen more frequently.

+Kuba Brudnik I started with homemade picks and such, windshield wiper blades are a good source for materials. Going to a junkyard and getting dipsticks [the kind you use for checking the oil level in a car] would also work as long as you get the flat ones and clean them well. there are plenty of videos on how to make picks on youtube.

Finally picked one of these twice the other day and once today but it seemed more like luck. How does one "feel" for the pins? All I feel is junk in there. The lock works so I know its not that. All the pins feel over set and I'm getting way more than five clicks when I'm trying to set them.

What are your thoughts for left handed pickers? For me I feel I have had much more success using the pick with my left hand. But I find it hard to hold the lock the way you do. Is using your thumb for feel with the tension wrench a good idea? That's pretty much the way I have been picking so far. Great video!
@thephantom149210 жыл бұрын
I'm not a picker, but I understood that the finger is more sensitive than the thumb, so it could be easier to do it with the finger for the tension than with the thumb, since you can feel better...

@lucastuart31058 жыл бұрын
I Wasn't implying you were a criminal or anything, i was just saying that because he was testing the security of the lock, although, it is kinda worrying that you can just drill it off XD.
@cmj200028 жыл бұрын
People have other reasons than theft for trying to open a lock. I lost the keys for some of mine and I had to use bolt cutters or a pick and yes a drill. Some locks are harder than others to drill, but I have not found one yet that can't be drilled out. You may ruin a couple of bits, but they always pop.
