She is EXTREMELY articulate. I love how she expresses and carries herself. I’ve already graduated college but she’s making me want to go to Howard for law.
@TimothyRichard12345
@TimothyRichard12345 3 жыл бұрын
@Ash Hegde I didn’t say that I WOULD. I’m not actually applying there. It’s also not a bad law school, it’s just not great. It’s ranked 91 but they have decent employment stats and a pretty high big law rate.
@TimothyRichard12345
@TimothyRichard12345 3 жыл бұрын
@Ash Hegde You do realize that firms are going off of reputation and aren’t actually looking at the USNews list when choosing to hire? 29% of Howard (91) students go into BL which is more than UIUC (29), Alabama (25), Minnesota (22), UGA (27), Brigham Young (29), and UF (21). Also to say that Top Firms don’t deal with schools outside of the Top 20 is untrue. Fordham (35) and Notre Dame (22) have a higher BL rate than Boston U (20). Over 1/3 of the classes of Boston College (29) and GW (27) go into BL as well. Also, not everyone is Big Law or bust. Some people have their own interests and are okay with working Mid Law, Small Law, or PI. If you do want to work Big Law, then you need to go on a case by case basis after the T20 but to say that anything after 50 isn’t worth it isn’t true. There are T60s with higher BL rates than some T30s. To say that anything after 50 isn’t worth it is also elitist and discredits the people who are going to law school for reasons beyond big law and who are choosing those schools for other reasons.
@TimothyRichard12345
@TimothyRichard12345 3 жыл бұрын
@Ash Hegde Weak? All of the schools I’ve listed are ranked between 20-30, with the exception of Fordham which is ranked 35. So from your logic, all schools that aren’t Top 20 are weak, and the students who attend them are dumber and worse? And you’re not wrong about life being elitist or ableist, but that doesn’t mean that mentality is appropriate or should be acceptable. 157? Bottom of the barrel? We both know that’s not a spectacular score. However, it is 71st percentile which makes it decently above average and far from “bottom of the proverbial barrel.” If you were talking about people who had scores in the 140s and maybe even the low 150s, I’d probably agree that law school is a scam but not for people with scores that are above average but just not spectacular. People who go to schools like Penn State or Tulane aren’t going to be struggling to make a decent salary. The debt to income ratio also depends on how much aid you were offered by your school of choice. I’d think a school like Howard or Penn State could be a scam if you’re offered a poor scholarship. However, if your scholarship is nice and you’re okay with the median salaries, then go for it. Also the LSAT isn’t an IQ test. It’s not an indicator of intelligence. It’s the most learnable standardized test there is. Given enough time, effort, and resources, anyone can achieve a 170s score. Given this, I refuse to think of people with lower scores as “less smart” rather than thinking of them as not caring about BL or a top 20 school
@TimothyRichard12345
@TimothyRichard12345 3 жыл бұрын
@Ash Hegde If by "made up", you mean created by USNews and World Report, then yes. I'll also attach the link at the bottom so you can go ahead and check for yourself. Tulane and Penn State are both ranked 60. Fordham is ranked 35. Howard isn’t the best law school but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t legitimate. It is however, the best HBCU for law, and out of 186 law schools reported, Howard has the 30th highest percentage of students who entered BL in the last year. I'll attach the link for this too so you can check that out as well. I’m assuming that you applied to law school a long time ago and that your facts are outdated. Also, there have been countless studies proving that standardized tests don’t measure intelligence. Instead they measure your abilities to study and memorize information, manage stress, and work well in a high stakes environment. I will admit that these are all genuine reasons to say that someone who has a higher score is "better" for law. However, standardized tests are proven to not be an effective way of measuring these, because they have a massive disadvantage towards people who are neurodivergent, Black or Latinx, or less financially well off. People who are more financially well off have the resources to spend more time studying, hire tutors, and pay for better study materials. They can also pay to take the test more times. It's not fair for you to say that someone who got a 175 but is neurotypical is definitively smarter or better than someone who got a 157 but has dyslexia, dyscalculia, or autism. It's not fair for you to say that someone who has a 175 because they've taken the test five or six times is definitively smarter or better than someone who has a 157 because they took the test once or twice. It's not fair to say that someone who got a 175 because they could afford the best studying materials is definitively smarter or better than someone who got a 157 because they lacked financial resources and worked with what they had. This is part of the reason that there is a huge racial achievement gap in higher education and why URMs are so sought after. URMs are statistically much more likely to come from disadvantaged backgrounds. They don't have the resources to do as well on standardized tests and score lower on average because of that. This causes only 28% (17% black and 11% Latinx) of URMs who graduated HS to attend a 4 year institution and only 12% (only 7% black and 5% LatinX) of law school students to be URMs Saying that your standardized test score makes you "smarter" or "better" than others is completely elitist and ableist. It also could be considered a little racist depending on your perception. I know that the world is elitist and ableist (and somewhat racist) but that doesn't make it okay. www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-law-schools/law-rankings lawschooli.com/best-law-schools-for-biglaw/

@Ash Hegde I’m extremely aware that people who are gifted have a tendency to be neurodivergent. I was classified as gifted in the 6th grade. I’m not a genius, but my IQ is in the 130s. I also finished college at 18 years old, and I’m applying to law schools, currently 19, while taking a gap year. However, I’m autistic. My social mannerisms, and emotional needs are different than the average person. I also have a harder time understanding things that most people would consider “logical.” Due to my autism, I had a weaker understanding of the thought processes conveyed on the LSAT. I bombed my Logical Reasoning section and I scored a 155 on my first attempt. I’ve since improved and am currently in the 160s after attempt two. However, according to your logic, I’m dumber than people who scored a 170+? Also, schools after 35 aren’t “really bad.” There are multiple schools after that which have over a 100k median private sector salary, and multiple schools with 70%+ employed at graduation. They’re just not your cup of tea. If it works for the individual person, then it works. I’d consider a “really bad” school to be a school with an abysmal employment rate and an abysmal median salary. Howard also isn’t necessarily “bad.” It has a high private sector salary and decent employment stats. I’d consider it to be more “middle of the road.”

@Ash Hegde You're under every comment I've seen so far and you're saying the same thing. If you don't like Howard, that's fine. There's no need to dissuade anyone else from wanting to attend.
@jaedonarnasalam1594
@jaedonarnasalam1594 3 жыл бұрын
@Ash Hegde You’re definitely entitled to that opinion. There are better ways to relay and portray your message than going out of your way to spread hate on a school that irrespective of any issues is still a dream school for many people.
@jaedonarnasalam1594
@jaedonarnasalam1594 3 жыл бұрын
@Ash Hegde I’m well aware of those topics and based strictly off of the parameters that you provided, you could make the argument that any school is a scam. It’s pretty clear that Howard in particular seems to be the sensitive topic for you, seeing that you spent all day commenting under every comment today. Are institutions perfect? No. Is Howard perfect? No. Is the college system perfect? No. Instead of berating this school under every comment, create content about your viewpoints and helpful information to guide students to make educated decisions so they don’t fall victim. It’s up to you though. I’m just saying that what you spent the last 24 hours doing, isn’t helping anyone see your perspective, it’s deterring people.

@jaedonarnasalam1594

@Ash Hegde At the end of the day, Howard is always going to be here and will always have students enrolled. It really sounds like your issues aren’t just with Howard though, it sounds like a systemic thing. Maybe focus your attention on that instead of trolling a school in KZbin comments.

Ok, so much to unpack. First, asking about White people at Howard is ridiculous considering that question never surfaced in the other school interviews (Harvard, Princeton) Secondly, commenting on how articulate she is is NOT a compliment. She’s an educated black woman at a prestigious university. It’s expected that she represents herself appropriately. I’m looking forward to seeing this young lady change the world. @Ash Hegde Very ignorant of you to use SAT scores as a way to measure intelligence. A simple google search would tell you that sat's do not indicate your intelligence or likeliness to succeed in the real world. You also have no knowledge of the "affirmative action" programs you talk about. Maybe if you research the former Googler April Curley (the one who recruited 300 hbcu engineers and then was fired) you would see that the problem isn't lack of talent but the lack of outreach from Silicon Valley. This is changing though, as Google now actively recruits and teaches comp sci classes at Howard; they came to us because we have a reputation of excellence 😉
