Thanks for posting this old TV ad. I owned two used VW 412 wagons in the early-mid 80s. My favourite was an African red 1.8L with 3-speed automatic, which was a huge upgrade (size, features & power) from my former ride - a 1967 VW Beetle. My older brother, who had a newer c1972 Beetle, would often borrow my 412 for longer trips. People now laugh at the puny 72 HP rating, but that was not bad in the day for a 4-cylinder. My replacement, a 1982 VW Rabbit 1.7L only had a few more, at 76 HP.

When I was 9 my aunt gifted my folks an old Variant 412 LE nicknamed 'Dotty' due to its number plate. It was orange and caused no end of bother (likely due to age and high mileage). The engine, when it did run, used to make a loud tick, tick, tick noise, had very little power and a really grim steering wheel. I still thought it was great though, better than waiting for a bus in the rain.
