Great video Matt. I do disagree with you on one point however. You are correct about the larger F style clamps, but the 6 inch clamps are a steal. Whenever they are on sale I pick up at least two. They are critical whenever I build any crosscut sled. I clamp my fences to a nice steel bar I have and they come out completely flat. Give them a try.

If I am making shop furniture that needs casters, I take apart a Harbor Freight furniture dolly and use the wheels from that. The dollies are usually cheaper than buying casters at the box stores. They don't lock but I have used them on things like lumber racks and they carry a LOT of weight.

I’ve had great luck with the short F-Style clamps at HF. As long as you stick to the 12” or the relatively soft steal on the bar doesn’t cause any issues. For anything longer than 12” then the Bessie or Jorgensens are definitely the way to go.

I recently bought into the Bauer 20V line. I have M12 but M18 seems too expensive battery wise and I needed a cordless saw for a job. The Bauer cordless 7 1/4" saw is awesome for it's price. Considering I got it free with their 5 amp battery deal. I got a second 5 amp to get the work done and was in. Actually, the battery will generally last me a day if not a project. 7 1/4"! Cheap blades and full depth bevels. Quiet. a big win. We will see what else I might need, but it seems like a quality cordless system and the batteries are priced fairly.

Thanks Matt. I have the dust extractor and agree it’s a fine tool. I use a 1-1/4 inch ID central vac hose instead of the stiff Harbor Freight hose. In addition, I have the hose covered with a fabric sock so I don’t feel any static electricity. Correction to your comment about filter cleaning, the air flow rate drops about 50% for about 2 seconds during the filter cleaning. However, it’s not a big deal and you learn to work with it.

I just got the 1 gallon version for free and I'm curious as to what I can use with a 1 gallon compressor? When I got it it was so loud. It turned out the housing for the air filter was loose and rattling. I made a rubber washer for it and now it's as quiet as my kitty cat.
@ceeweedsl22 сағат бұрын
Yes, me too. I think the Fortress quiet 2 gal is better than the similar looking Senco quiet mini compressor. And for me, the fundamental need was that my off-grid garage's inverter couldn't power my rigid hot dog compressor but the 2 gallon fortress is not just QUIET but very LOW power draw. It's like a brushless tool in efficiency because it has the best flow at 90psi in it's class. I'm can run a framing nailer off it for DIY speed (some resting) construction with it. Not for builder framing but the 15 ga finish nailer is no sweat.

Thanks for that. I saw your sander videos and while I am in the Hercules line for battery powered tools, I think you're review is legit and as unbiased as possible. Although not a WW'ing tool, I think the one tool HF haters would love is the Hercules battery powered porta bandsaw. My dad gave me an "old" (early '90's) Milwaukee corded one and I also pulled an old Skil porta bandsaw (it was made back when they made good tools) out of the trash at a previous employer (bad cord, it was cheaper for them to replace it than have one of their electricians to repair it) and the Hercules is equal to either one (aside from not having infinite runtime due to it being battery powered). I keep it at my metal lathe for when I need to finish parting off in my lathe, which is not rigid enough to fully part most pieces.

Another magnetic "tool" from HF that I picked up and have next to the paper towel holder - a box thing to hold disposable gloves. I have light, medium, and heavy duty nitrile gloves (also HF), and I put my medium ones (that I use a lot) on that. Couple those things with one of the metal rolling carts and you have a good solution for getting things around while still having access to your gloves, paper towels, etc.
@MadMonk67Күн бұрын
On the paper towel holders, I have a couple of these around my shop, and with the cycles of cold winters and hot summers in my area, I've found that the adhesive they use to hold the magnets on the holders tends to become brittle and when you go to remove it to put a new roll on the holder, the magnets come off the holders, staying on whatever you've attached the holders to. However, a judicious application of Weldbond on them seems to do the trick and keeps the magnets attached to the holders.

Harbor Freight has some pretty decent disposable items that I would say everyone should check out. Zip ties, nitrile gloves, etc. I also have been happy with their individual super cheap spring clamps, caster wheels, air compressor hose parts, and I actually have a pair of goat skin work gloves from them that I love! They tend to have some decent bolt-together items like carts and organizers. Heavy duty stuff that's kind of oldschool and I love it. I have some of that with good results. I own a few larger items from them including a wood chipper, 3 ton low profile car jack, and I even have the well hated Chicago Electric corded circular saw. But I gotta say I've now owned all those for years and plenty of usage and they've all been excellent. You'd think that circular saw would be straight garbage but to be honest, for the price, it has thoroughly defeated the criticisms I've always seen of it. That being said I for sure usually would buy Dewalt, Milwaukee, or Bosch these days.

Back when I started working as a carpenter, my employer gave every new employee $100 to go get some hand tools and bags. One new guy went to harbor freight and spent $80 on his gear, including a tape measure. He had to buy a new framing hammer, take measure, and 1" chisel after about 4 months or so. I think it was less, actually. The tape measure quit retracting. I think he bought a Stanley after that and it wasn't that much more expensive. I use a DeWalt and it's a tank, although it's got some twist in it now. Almost a full rotation in the first ten feet. But it's fallen off a ladder two stories up twice and still works fine.

Now that HF has released a Bauer-branded dust collector and a matching cyclone separator, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

I have a bunch of the F-style bar clamps and I've never had one bend like what you showed. I just did a test with a 30" HF bar clamp. I clamped it to a 2x4 (tubafour?!). I drew lines down either side of the bar before clamping. It deflected about 1/16th side-to-side along the thin part of the bar, and about 1/4" along the thicker part. I did the same thing with an older Pony Jorgensen clamp with the wood handles. It didn't deflect on the thin side but it deflected about the same 1/4" or slightly more. It wasn't an accurate test. Maybe you had a bad batch or maybe I just can't put as much force on it as you. I'm reaching for parallel clamps if I need a ton of force anyways.

The Hercules dust extractor onboard outlet is not an issue, the Festool onboard outlets have similar low ratings and work with all of their tools. I have the Hercules extractor and it works just fine with my KEB60 tracksaw.

Did you test the Hercules cordless sander? I've had good luck with it.

They raised the price of the Dust extractor. Its $350 now. Went to buy one and found out. Decided to wait. It's nice, but I work on planned budgets, and that was over what I planned.

Right now, my go to tape measure is a HF one. Maybe I should check it out!

Me too. Fortunately I've never used it for anything super accurate.

You should check out Wen’s parallel clamps. I was impressed

I have actually found the F-style 12" bar clamp CAN be serviceable (not ideal or recommended) for lightweight jobs. The TRICK is to find ones that aren't bent and don't slip when tightened. I find there is a TREMENDOUS variability in the quality of these on display. Finding usable F-clamps at HF is as bad as finding a straight 2x4 at HD or L's. I mainly use these clamps to secure my miter box or tabletop workbench to my assembly table; they're fine for that sort of thing. I only have two of these clamps in my shop because clamps you can get at HD or L's are FAR superior in quality for not a lot more money. When the HF clamps die, I'm replacing them with some good-quality ratchet clamps from HD or L's. I've also found that nitrile gloves are a fairly good value for the price at HF if you treat them as a single-use commodity. They may not be as durable as the ones you can get at HD or L's ( I can sometimes use those 3 -4 times before having to toss them), but they do the trick to protect your hands from CA glue or harsh solvents during a single use.

Get an auto switch and plug extractor and tool into and you got auto start, so that really doesn't matter on the 3 amp plug on the front ..super easy fix there ..and those Breman clamps I have and get perfect glue ups, the best thing is, they are lifetime no questions returns which makes em a no brainer, I've done doors and big table tops with those with 0 issues ..

I have to agree about the Hercules sander. It does a nice job but it does really fatigue your hand. Getting all of my Christmas craft show projects done with it really hurt my hand. Just got the Dewalt cordless sander and am hoping that it is much better. I just need to get some more batteries for it.

I'd like to see a tool review on the Hart tools sold at Walmart if you have a done one already. That's what I currently own and done well for me. I own the variety from hand tools right up to garden and even a lawn mower.

Great video, Matt. With my CT48, I havent used any other tool than the sander. Its a great dust extractor I have a couple of the magnetic trays and they're definitely handy. Reference the parallel clamps, I have several Besseys and some Jets. I like the the Jets better because they just feel more sturdy and are easier for a beginner to use.

I don’t know why this popped in my head while watching this video but maybe someday a review of best horse stall mats as your the only person I ever heard without looking up just for horses yet.

Real horse mats are extremely hard. I just got 2 rolled mats at HF and they are very comfortable for me and the pooch😂

@ ty for making my point for using them in a workshop where we roll heavy tools around. I doubt your hb Matt’s would allow it much but even the cheapest hb Matt’s haven’t been bad so far. But I have rolled my tablesaw on them either

Maybe look at the Hercules Sliding Compound Miter Saw. It compares really well to the Dewalt and for less money.
