Thanks for the video Matt. I know I'm 5 years late, but I had to watch it now because my wife also was very generous in getting me this for Christmas and birthday (they're on the same day). Let me know if you're still enjoying it. I can't wait to use it. Thanks again. PS. She got me the Dewalt stand that's made for the planer also.

The tables were set at the slight elevation to minimize snipe at the factory. So you just made the snipe worse by leveling them.
@konjiki240sx5 жыл бұрын
Do not adjust the tables flat. The tables are calibrated from the factory to minimize snipe. Try the tables first before adjusting.

@Winston Sammy leave it alone and you will not have any snipe. You can use feed rollers for long material but make sure the feed is elevated slightly

Makes sense now. I have seen people slightly raise the boards when they are coming out. So leaving the tables slightly angled up does this for you.

I bought one of these several years ago and it works great. I've gone through a few sets of blades, mostly because of nicks in the blades caused by hitting something hard in the wood. The blades are reversible, so you get two shots at one set of blades. I thought of buying a helical head for my planer, but they cost almost as much as the machine, about $455! That's about 9 sets of $50 straight blades. The helical head has 40 square blades, each with 4 edges that can be rotated individually. I suppose if you are doing a LOT of planing, it might be worth it, but I'll buy the straight blades for the foreseeable future.

Great video unboxing demo... This is a nice thickness planer as designed & built. The 15 amp., approx. 3/4 HP motor is specifically designed to power the (3) blade HSS head. I would think twice before converting it over to a helical spherical for a couple reasons. First, the cost factor, at approx. $400.00 the sandwich planer now becomes a $1000.00 plus sandwich planer. Second & most importantly, overall life expectancy of the unit's motor over the test of time... If I was inclined to dump that kind of money into this already very nice machine, I would go the next step & buy a Grizzly or equivalent in the $1800.00 range that comes with 3-5 HP motor with the helical spherical cutting head with considerably more cutting inserts than the Byrd unit that is made for this machine. That is my take on this, it is not meant to be gospel... Thanks, Bill on the Hill... :-)

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll keep mine as is. I don't use it enough at this point to worry about any upgrades. It works great just how it is.
@ffjsb4 жыл бұрын
I've had mine for 5-6 years now. The wrench has magnets to hold the blades when you change them so you don't have to handle them with your bare hands. If you get small chips in the blades, you can adjust one or two sideways a little so that if all 4 have a chip in the same spot, you can move 2 over so they don't all line up and you get a relatively smooth cut. The blades are also double sided. The blade cove inside the housing that directs the chips out is somewhat weak where the thumbscrews hold it down, mine broke into a few small pieces. I repaired it using epoxy and sheet styrene (from a hobby shop) and that was good enough that I didn't have to order a new part, at least not yet.

I’ve had the DW 735x for about a month. It does beautiful work. The only issue I have had is that I didn’t wax the bed before I started using it and a combination of resin buildup on the bed as well as dust and wood particles on the feeder wheels caused a feeder problem. This was easily remedied by using a mild solvent to clean the bed and then to apply a paste wax, as well as to wipe down the wheels with the machine off and unplugged. I received one recommendation that I may want to use a solvent to clean the wheels, but thus far, that has not been necessary. I purchased the Dewalt stand that is made for this planer. I think it was around $150. Clearly I could build something less expensive but I am an advocate for the Dewalt stand because of the outstanding stability as well as the kick up wheel which lets you move it around with complete ease. With the kick up wheel in the up position the stand has outstanding stability and rigidity.

I’ve looked at that planer stand myself. I may get it later down the line as it seems well built and suited for the planer.

Had me a DW715 this week. Read and watched some reviews on it and thought what the heck, my old planer is 20 years old so maybe this will be a real game changer. Wrong. First, the blades were untempered as they became useless after no more than 5 minutes and that was surfacing some new 2x10 soft fir. Flipped the blades over and another 5 minutes or so and I found myself trying to forcibly push the material through, even though I was only taking less than 1/16" per ass, or half a rotation on the height crank wheel. At $60 for a replacement set of blades, I figure my operating cost to be $360 per hour if I was foolish enough to continue swapping blades. The cord is on the wrong side of the machine as it is on many imported tools, and the on/off switch is poorly placed and constantly being turned off when sliding a board across the top of the machine and then lowering to re-feed. Lastly, the snipe was the worst i have ever encountered on a surface planer, having bought my first one (Makita) back in 1980. Very dissatisfied, this planer is headed back to the store where I bought it. Will continue to use my vintage Ryobi AP13 till it dies.

Great video! This was the final inspiration to pull the trigger and buy this machine. It is a BEAST! I adjusted the tables to have a very, very slight rise - no snipe. I built my own table, and figured out a sawdust collection system, using a discarded 30 gallon barrel, dryer tubing, and a piece of window screen. Doesn't collect the dust, but handles the sawdust perfectly. Since I plane outside, the dust isn't an issue.

Just bought the 735X planer. I am waiting for it to ship to my Lowes store. One interesting thing is the 735 was on sale for Black Friday at $534 down from the normal price of $599. I scrolled a little lower and found they were running the 735X with the shelves and extra blades for $499. I was ready to buy the 735 but quickly changed my mind. So after planing one small 12-inch wide aspen board from 3/8 to 1/4, it looked like it had snowed in my shop. I had white flakes of aspen all over the place. @@731Woodworks The first one is a way better idea than the other...my planer has a bag sort of like that one but its designed to cinch up around the trash can like he uses here. The problem is it will blow itself loose on occasion and make a mess. This one lets that pressure out with the screen. One of these days I am going to build that sort of thing but one day I am going to do a lot of things ya know. You definitely do not need a shop vac or any kind of suction as you have already figured out ;) and since you wont be sucking against any hose with this kind of thing you can use 4in dryer hose which is easy to come by and pretty cheap but you want to go with the stiffer metal hose because the plastic gets eaten up pretty fast...basically the kind thats supposed to go in the wall...not from the dryer to the wall. I cant find the link I had a while back but something kinda like this... www.lumberjocks.com/projects/108121

Just bought one of these and was very excited until I opened it up and discovered a double crack at the corner of the base. I'm really bummed out. Have to go through the hassle of returning it UPS, return authorization, driving 70 miles to ship it, etc. I could tell it had been opened before I ever got it and sloppily resealed. i imagine someone else didn't appreciate the crack either and sent it back like I'm doing. Larry Long Are there any other good planers out there?
@731Woodworks4 жыл бұрын
That’s bad! Sorry to hear it. Where did you buy it from? Home Depot and Lowe’s both have this model.

@@731Woodworks It came from CPO Outlets, in Suwanee, Georgia. All I can find locally is the plain 735. Hate to try ordering again.

I understand.

Somebody had to drop that from quite a height to damage the base. I've had mine for years and the base has held up well.
