You asked, so here goes. Actually the US had several intentions over the years of going metric. Thomas Jefferson was a big proponent of going metric. He ordered a set of standards (calibrated objects which the US would use to base what a true meter, kg, etc actually is) from Europe but the ship sank on the way over here. The Imperial system was based on a time before decimals were widely used by most craftsmen. When a measurement gets divided in half, well that's pretty easy with 0.5. However divide it by 3 and it goes to 0.3333333333. The units in the Imperial system units were divisible by 2, 3, and 4. As time progressed, the French came up with a new system that would be more universal and easier to convert between units within itself. Although many countries adopted the Metric system, the US and Great Britain (who taught us the Imperial system) held fast to their beloved measuring system. Great Britain grudgingly began to ditch its Imperial system in the 1970s because it was the only way to gain access to the markets of continental Europe. The US on the other hand at this time was more independent both in trade and in geographical location. We as a country are by and large an island and really only have two neighboring countries as opposed to European and Asian countries which have many neighboring countries with which they need to travel and do trade with. Our economical and geographic isolation has enabled us to hold on to our "antiquated" unit of measurements. In order to convert over to the metric system, it needs to become part of everyday life. However the cost of replacing signage and machinery are likely the biggest barrier from converting over.

****** @2:09 DO NOT put the 3M stickers where Matt is showing ***** Go to @3:20 so find out where it should go. Otherwise, you'll have to get some more 3M tape. I drilled holes in mine so it didn't really matter that much. But If you're planning on use the 3M tape, putting it where Matt says @2:09 will ruin your day.

I'll be adding this to my planer soon. I 100% agree that we should switch to the metric system. A lot of the calculations we do in engineering class is based on the SI system and then sometimes you will have to convert back to US customary units. It gets tricky when one unit is given in SI and the rest are in US or vice versa.

Doing 'everything more simply' is how you decline long term though. Great ease with base 2 is an incredible advantage, while 'more base 10' gets you very little.

It’s completely not needed. The stops it comes with them are extremely accurate. I’ve tested it, don’t waste your money.
@montet202
@montet202 10 ай бұрын
DROs are not only worth the money, they pay for themselves extremely quickly. In addition, a planer (especially a bench top) should be used to get a rough thickness. For example, I plane to .90 for kitchen rails and stiles, then finish at .875 after joinery on a wide belt (or drum sander if that’s what you have, or even with a hand plane). These gauges are relatively cheap, and very accurate allowing for easy repeatability that is far more accurate than the stops, and with far more variability of thicknesses. Then having multiple machines with DROs can drastically speed up your milling process while improving the quality of your work. Household DIY projects likely don’t benefit from a DRO, but I’d assume, if you’re watching these channels, you’re trying to learn some semblance of quality wood craft. If that’s the case, you could certainly benefit from this gauge.
@tinkerer4
@tinkerer4 10 ай бұрын
Ooooo.... Definitely going to see about getting one of these! Does it work on other planers or is it just for the DW735? Also, I'd kill for a DRO for my table saw fence. Aaaaaaand iGaging makes one! Please do a review of the iGaging 35-EF52! Looks like Penn Tool Co and Grizzly both sell it, but Amazon doesn't for some reason.

I remember in either 2nd or 3rd grade we spent the whole year learning metric. No big deal, since most of us didn’t really know imperial very well anyway. Went home that summer, came back in the fall & not another whisper about metric, like our lesson plans from the year before had disappeared into an X-file somewhere.

We are not stupid. Metric is stupid, numbers-only based - good for science, bad for design & natural measurements that go well in natural design. Imperial is based on the rule of thirds, the golden ratio & makes more sense in design because of it. Your index finger is EXACTLY 1 inch long at the tip. All index fingertips, regardless of the size of the rest of your hand, are EXACTLY one inch long. Because God does not make mistakes. HE IS RISEN, INDEED.

@@731Woodworks 👍 What’s weird is that it appears to only be that way on the version specifically for the DW735 and it’s $10 more expensive than the generic version which is more complex given that it has a remote display. Still useful but if I get one, I would opt for the generic version unless I’m missing something that this one has other than a DW735 specific mount. My planer isn’t scheduled to arrive until Tuesday so I will have to spend some quality time with it … at least until my wife stops realizing that a lot of boxes are bypassing our gift stash and heading out to the garage becauseI can say it’s my birthday present so many times prior to it on the 24th🤪

i looked into the iguage and wixey and wound up getting the wixey as I just can't figure out why the USB cord on that thing isn't removable? I would never use a battery pack sitting next to the planer, and the wixey uses 2AAA Batteries which are far more common in my house than the CR2032 the iguage uses, and from what i could discern from the video and online instructions the wixey is a tad faster at calibrating. Though either way having a digital readout on the planer is a game changer.

As an American i can do metric if i need to. It's easy, but guess what? I can do imperial too. Easy for me. Not so much for metric weenies. America never needed metric because we standardized measurements early in our history. Euro weenies had different standards in every village and burg. They should have just adopted freedom units that were already standardized.

I've been using the Wixey version on my 735 for a couple of years. Great addition for not a lot of money. After watching and for those comparing, the Wixey "self-calibrates" without having to measure and runs on AAA battery. Not digging that dangly cord. Also, I didn't see an incremental mode (temporary zero) if you want to measure the delta of two measurements.

I’m guessing the calibration is the same if you have the helical carbide insert cutter? That would be a great addition to any planer.

Yes. It is also easy to adjust the calibration to accommodate a sled, or other jigs. Super easy.

Thank you 731 Matt! Yet another genius shop deck out tool tip. I do not yet have a planer, but when I do purchase my DeWalt, I know what accessories with which to top it off. I have solved my dangling, in fact all my cord issues, with a supply of varying length Velcro cable ties. Off brand of course. The closer your ties are to the only being 2 or 3ish wraps around the total cable you have lassoed the better. As always, thank you and Much R E S P E C T and L🫶🏻VE to Y🫵🏻U and Miss Amy‼️✊🏼✊🏼✊🏼
