Some pipe clamp tips: I put myself through school working in a furniture mill. I ran the door crew, where we made approximately 120 raised-panel doors each day. That's a lot of glue ups! We used nothing but pipe clamps (parallel clamps weren't common back then). Here are some suggestions for getting the most out of your pipe clamps: First, buy the kind of pipe clamps that have feet. These are sometimes called H-style pipe clamps. The biggest complaint with pipe clamps in doing a panel glue up is that the clamps keep falling on their side. The pipe clamps with feet address that problem. Second, buy the same kind of pipe clamps. It's not necessary to buy the same brand, but buy ones that are compatible with each other. When the clamps are set up on your table, the pipes should all be the same height off the table. This will make glue ups easier. Third, you can save some money by using 1/2" pipe clamps instead of 3/4" pipe clamps. This is typically a false economy. One of the advantages of pipe clamps is that you can do larger glue ups by simply using longer pipe. There's too much flex in 1/2" pipe for glue ups of over 4 feet. Fourth, pipe clamps come with rubber or plastic clamping pads that slip over the jaws of the clamps. Glue the pads onto the jaws. You'll loose them otherwise. When the pads are torn off the jaws, make yourself some replacements from 1/4" plywood. Fifth, put a heavy coat of paste wax on the pipe. It will make it easier to clean off glue. Sixth, you'll find you want several different clamp lengths. For clamp lengths you use often, it makes sense to have a number of clamps of those lengths ready to go. For lengths you use rarely, it's cheaper to simply store those lengths of pipe in your shop. For example, when I made my large assembly table, I needed four 8' pipe clamps. I bought four 8' lengths of 3/4" black pipe and borrowed the clamps from some of my 36" pipe clamps. When I was through with that project, I removed the clamps from the pipes and reinstalled them on the 36" pipes. The 8' sections of pipe are stored above the rafters in my shop. I've used them a few times since then for other projects, but it makes more sense (and takes up less room) to store them as bare pipe than to store them as pipe clamps. Finally, if you're going to be doing a lot of panel glue ups, make yourself a gluing rack. The rack is made from two 2x4s about 4' long that are screwed on edge to a piece of 1/4" plywood that's about 36" wide. On the top edge of each 2x4 (the edge that isn't screwed to the plywood), cut a series of slots centered about 4" apart along the length of the 2x4s. Each slot should be just wider than the pipe in your pipe clamps and deep enough that pipe sticks up about 1/8" above the 2x4 when the pipe is laying in the slot. So, for 3/4" pipe, you'd make the slots about 5/8" deep and about 13/16" wide. To use, lay two or more pipe clamps in the slots across the two 2x4s. Space the clamps apart as needed for your glue up. The gluing rack will keep each of your clamps parallel to each other and the same height off your bench. Once the clamps are initially snugged up, between each pair of pipe clamps on the bottom, lay another pipe clamp across the top of your glue up. Then tighten all the clamps. Once the clamps are tightened, you can remove your project from the rack and proceed with your next glue up. Using this method, a team of two on my crew could easily glue up 40 pairs of doors in an hour.

@@blairrobinson Generally, yes. I don’t own any 1/2” pipe clamps for the reason I mentioned. However, if someone had a lot of room to store extra clamps, I could see an argument for having a set of 1/2” clamps for smaller item, such as cabinet doors, and a set of 3/4” clamps for larger items. I don’t have the room or the budget for two sets of clamps. Since 3/4” clamps work well for both large and small items, I think they’re the better option.

I’ve been a follower for you for quite some time and enjoy your content videos. However, I have one issue with this video. The Harbor Freight F clamp twist. I’ve used these clamps for quite some time without having an issue. What you showed was from over-clamping. When doing glue ups, apply only enough pressure to allow an even squeeze out. Then add a gentle touch more. If your joints are properly done you don’t need any more than that. If you crank way past the squeeze out you start compressing the wood fibers. Panel glue up does not require gorilla force.

You're absolutely right about clamping pressure. Also, too much pressure will tend to squeeze out all of your glue. Ive been in the biz for over 40 years and have over 200 clamps of different styles and brands. I buy perishables from HF like rags, gloves, brushes etc. but when they offered their "new" f clamps, the black and blue ones, I decided to try them. I am selling all my Jorgensen f clamps to a young guy that I work with. I never use them any more and I'm replacing them with HF.

In addition, my experience when over clamping f styles, is the bar tends to slump or bow the whole length of the bar, in the direction of the clamping jaws, back to front, not deviating sideways like in the video. So if i had the jaws facing downward, the bar would have a low spot in the middle, and high on each end. I dont know how he would even get it to bend sideways like that!!

I agree with your recommendations with the exception of the Harbor Freight F clams. Their 6”-12” F clamps are outstanding for the price! The plastic tips will occasionally come off, but I just dab a bit of CA glue on the tips and you’ll never have them come off again. I’ve used them for years, I own tons of them and I believe I’ve only had to throw one away in all that time. You can buy them for as little as $2-5 each. I have some of their longer F clamps as well, don’t use them as much, but never had a problem with them bending on me, probably because I’m not as strong and muscular as you Matt! Also have the long aluminum clamps, but not sure what brand they are. Someone gave me about 20 of them, but I’ve never used them as I always pull out my pipe clams for longer glue ups. This same person gave me a box full of the old school wooden screw clamps in 6” & 12”, but I’ve never used them as I simply forget I have them, although they have great uses. I’ve never owned parallel clamps as pipe clamps have always worked for me, but maybe I’ll buy them one day after I stop buying so many tools I don’t need or use!

Squeeze clamps are about the most usable clamps made. You can use them to hang up laundry, close a bag of potato chips, hang up yard sale signs, or put up Christmas lights.

I agree with not buying long harbor freight F clamps, but the 6” and 12” I actually prefer of my Jergensons and bessey clamps, because they are lighter and easier to handle. Also, recently been buying Taylor Tools F style,pistol grip squeeze clamps and kinda like them better than the big name brands, (Irwin). They just work really well, and are a good bit less costly! And Taytools has them on sale regularly!

Personally I prefer the Jorgenson squeeze clamps as you can combine two to get one that is almost twice the size. Can't comment on the other types as right now all I have are squeeze clamps and the Betsy strap clamp.

One more comment, the beauty of pipe clamps is that you can get multiple pieces of pipe and use the same clamps. I have a half dozen 3/4" pipe clamps, but I have six sections of pipe in 12",24", 48" and 96" lengths.

I have many Harbor Freight F clamps, the 3 ft do flex, but they dont bend like what was in this video. The 6", 12" and 2' are great and for the price you can load up on them. I also have some pony clamps and Bessy, but at $3 for a 6" HF clamp, hard to beat.

HF's new style f clamps are fantastic! F clamps, any brand, are not meant for extream clamping pressure. If you are bending them you are over tightening them. Ive been a cabinet maker and furniture builder and finisher for over 40 years and own over 200 different clamps. Im replacing all my f clamps with HF.

Im totally a beginner however I did work in construction before I decided to do this sort of thing at home and I definitely skipped those "quick-grip" style clamps, I remember using them once or twice and I hated how they seem to just slowly release on what theyre gripping (they were the irwin brand ones). Id say just go straight for small f-clamps as the cheap 300mill ones will just clamp down on anything with insane strength, youll get good at using them one handed, also i think people underestimate a ratchet strap as a beginner, longer clamps are expensive and if youre clever with the geometry you can clamp it from certain angles to account for it trying to rotate a piece its going over and pulling out of square.

I have some panel clamps from Rickler and would 100% recommend picking some up. A little pricey but wait for a sale or get their coupons. It’s like 1 piece of mail every month. Definitely would recommend them for flat and even glue ups!

Hey Matt, those f clamps from harbor freight I had the same issue with them.. however the short ones are worth the money. Because they aren't long enough to bend. Just a thought my friend.. thanks for another great video.. Also those kreg face clamps, they are nice. But may I recommend the armor tools self adjusting face clamps. You can adjust a little finger screw as far as how tight they clamp. But once you set them you don't really have to mess with it again just unclamp and reclamp. Anyhow take it easy.

I am a fan and a subscriber. You cover a lot of ground, dig deep when necessary, as in the Saw Stop videos (which are among my favorites), your videos are dense with info, yet you are not verbose. But I must take issue again, @11:00 minutes in. I wish that people could learn that parallel clamps only offer the illusion and are anything but parallel. You mention that "these jaws, once tightened down, are parallel to each other", but the opposite is true. At a slight turn of the screw, any bar will deflect, and the tighter the greater the deflection. The jaws absolutely cannot be parallel until all the pressure is taken off, when they can help to hold a carcase or a box in a squarish condition after a squeeze has pulled the joints up tight. Speaking as the owner of harbor freight F clamps, I purchased some that were 24" or longer. These clamps don't have the strength to get squeeze out from simple joinery. The flex is too great They are ok in shorter lengths and I have a bunch of them. I cut the bars of my longer HF F clamps down to 24" and they can do that job well. FYI if you pay attention to various KZbin Woodworker's, you will see many use these clamps. Watch for sales and stock up. here is an outlet for reclaimed building parts near me and it has been a good source of 3/4” used galvanized pipe for much less money. Otherwise you can save money by purchasing galvanized pipe by buying longer lengths and cutting them down vs purchasing short pieces. If you can thread the cut ends, you can couple them back together if you need longer clamps.

I like this video and I think it’ll be helpful for a lot of people. That being said, I completely disagree that beginners should buy squeeze clamps (the bar style) first… or at all. I hate them. I get that they’re cheap, but they don’t provide enough pressure to be useful. I feel like it would be more cost effective to buy pipe clamps (you called them bar clamps) first because of the versatility. Or just buy more F-clamps. The other type of squeeze clamps are awesome though

Wetzler bar clamps, were the king of clamps in the 70's and 80's, especially among designer/makers woodshops including Wendels Castle among others. I was introduced to them as a student at the School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology. If you haven't heard of them it's for good reason because the company is now defunct. I have lots of clamps but my Wetzler ( 48 or so) collection continues to be the foundation of my shop clamps.

Excellent video. I agree with the recommendation that parallel clamps be the last clamps that you add to your collection. They can be nice to have, but they do anything that couldn't be done with less expensive clamps. Since parallel clamps cost two to three times as much as an equivalent quality F-style clamp (and might cost five times as much as a pipe clamp), most woodworkers would be better off with more of these other clamp types and fewer parallel clamps. I also agree with the recommendation to avoid the Harbor Freight F-style clamps. The bar in the HF clamps has too much flex. However, that's only true of HF's longer F-style clamps. Their 6", 12", and maybe their 18" clamps work very well and are a solid value. I have several 6" Bessy F-style clamps and prefer using my HF 12" or 6" clamps. (The Bessy's have a smooth wooden handle. The HF clamp's handle is a larger diameter and the rubber over mold make it easier to grip than the Bessy clamp's handle.)

Re "face clamp" - for large go knipex, for small go stronghand. I have plenty of both and use them a lot all at once around a perimeter similar to squeeze type but higher pressure

I used to recommend the harbor freight parrell clamps. I had 8 of them. Slowly, one by one, the clamp starts to slip on the bar which flattens the teeth. After this starts it's basically all down hill. I'm down to 2 which haven't been replaced. I returned the other 6 in one go and got the bessy 4 pack on sale. Honestly wouldn't go back.

Two yrs ago over 9k in tools were stolen from my storage shed. Thankfully I had insurance. Since then I've been replacing/ upgrading. I just replaced all my clamps plus a few extra. 96 in total. I've seen several reviews on the Breman clamps...nothing but love for those..that F clamp from harbor freight, just looked at those yesterday and after what you just said glad I passed on em, I was like wait, 6 bucks there's something wrong thats cheap..lol..I passed on them long ones there cause it look like it would be a disaster for deflection and there only 12 bucks, so I said nope, but now you said the wood idea for them might get em, only want like 4 really long ones like that and what 48 bucks, ok an fill em with wood...I'm that guy that says never can have to many clamps forsue..lol..

The long aluminum clamps are really good if reinforced with a length of 1 by lumber. The 6" and 12" steel F clamps are excellent, The bar is too short to flex like the longer ones do, and are on sale or have coupons for as little as $2 -$3 frequently.

I have found the 6 to 18 inch f clamps are great. Anything longer and you'll get too much flex. I also have a bunch of the 6 and 12 inch squeeze clamps and those are great for the money.

You should review Rockler's panel clamps. For beginners and hobbyists there's no better way to get a guaranteed flat panel. They're slower to use than parallel clamps, but I enjoy the peace of mind that comes with using them. Hobbyists and beginners don't always have tablesaws and jointers that are perfectly accurate at 90 degrees so it's easier to end up with bowed panels because of that.

Oh yeah, i need this info. I'm about to invest in clamps. By watching KZbin carpenters like you, buddy, i have the balls to start redoing my kitchen. I'm going to start by making a brand new cabinet piece for a sad little corner. It's going to have an epoxy countertop, which I'll be replacing the crappy tile countertops i have with. Then I will replace an upper with a place for my microwave. Then I'll be changing my pantry section into something more useful with slide out shelves on 500 pound capacity drawer guides. Finally, I'm refacing with stainless steel veneer, new doors and drawers that are full face. Some of this I'm not experienced at all with. But I've been an amateur carpenter for decades. It's a fun challenge.

Could a video idea. As someone who wants to get into woodworking, what would you buy for your shop if you have $1000-$1500 budget to get started? Assuming you start with nothing. I do have some clamps from welding b but only a few that are woodworking specific.

Any suggestions on how to avoid glue gumming up the rail on parallel clamps and also avoiding contact of the black pipe on a pipe clamp from contacting the wood (I under stain it can cause stains)

Couple things on the pipe clamps from my experience. Don't buy the Harbor freight pipe clamps. They slip when you tighten them. If you use the galvanized pipe you won't get the black stain on glue ups. Black pipe is about a dollar more for a 10 foot pipe at my local home depot.

If your primary 3/4" pipe clamp is 36" get pipe that is threaded on both ends and have extra double threaded lengths on hand for extensions using threaded couplings. My 36" becomes a 6' or 9' foot quickly and easily with just one set of jaws. Or if some lengths are unwieldly, have some 2" extensions available. And you can size down to a 2 footer if you need one. I probably only have 10 sets of pipe jaws but I have in infinite number of lengths.

@6:00 - another name for squeeze clamps, or what i thought the correct name for them are, is Spring Clamps. I see that in your pinned comment, you do actually use that term for them. Interesting that wasnt used in the video, as some would even call those speed clamps, or quick grip clamps, as squeeze clamps also.

I store my clamps by clamping them (gently) on the edge of a shelf. Is this bad for them? I've been doing this with some Irwin Quick Clamps for over 30 years and they seem fine. Thanks.

Woodworking covers a broad category. I am enjoying smaller projects and in some cases I just use painters tape to hold the parts together while they dry. Also, I prefer F-clamps that allow me to control the amount pressure over a fast clamp. The small fast clamps have not been reliable at all for me. Vibration can also the fast clamps to lose their hold. Bottom line, find out what works for you.

I actually like my Bremans more than my Jorgensen Parallel clamp. Even the Bremen quick clamps are nice. Not a harbor fraight guy at all.

I'm late to the party, but what's new? Something you didn't mention about pipe clamps is that the pipe is supplied by you. Therefore you can have a corner full of different lengths of pipe and can swap the clamp fixtures between them. I usually have my clamp heads on 24" pipe because that's what I use most....but I have a couple of 6 or 7 foot bars gathering dust that I use when I'm doing something big.

The Wood Whisperer did a real good parallel clamp study and found that the harbor freight didn't hold up over time. I have several brands and I like Jorgenson the best followed bye Jet. Irwin's screw is too fine a thread and Bessey's is too short.

Ant opinions on using Dubuque aluminum bar clamps? They are American made and have been around for a long time.

This is a bit older, so somebody may have mentioned it already, but HF's 12" and 18" F-clamps are great for the money. You can't develop enough pressure on them to make them flex, and they're really inexpensive. I've had *one* strip out its threads, but for the money, it's okay. I think I have about a dozen of each.

Great video :) just what I was looking for. So I have a question. I want to make a dining table, made out of 3 oak planks, 12” in width. 36” in total. I want to Connect Them using dowels and glue. Can I use bar clamps for that instead of parallel clamps?😊

Harbor Freight’s BREMEN squeeze clamps (375 lb) are great, as good as DeWalt & Jorgensen at about 60% of the price. 6”, 12”, 24”, & 36”.
